I had the chicken mufungo (roast plantain mashed with chicken) served with a roast chicken sauce.? It was pretty good. It's a Puerto Rican dish and something I've never tried. Not the best food quality from the plantain or chicken but everything was well made and very tasty. I also had the chicken soup because it looked so good while I was sitting at the bartop. A lot of different vegetables and fall-off-the-bone chicken. Not too salty and you could tell it was stewed awhile. Just really good also. Staff is very rude to non-Spanish speakers (something I've seen others on here mention as well), and are often having multiple conversations when taking orders. The food itself is pretty good, but they have false advertising. Their menu clearly shows a photo of an item being served with black beans, so naturally that's what I expected. Totally disappointed. I ordered 4 cubano sandwiches and 2 orders of maduros. the sandwiches had so little meat in them it looked like they had not finished making them. They will sell you the moldy items if you are the unlucky chosen one who happens to be there at a time of their convenience when they need food disposed in exchange for cash. They are very careless of how they prepare the food for customers, I received uncooked bloody chicken & a moldy 3 milk cake. I asked for a refund after peering around & not finding a no refund policy notice but she denied me my money. So be careful & cautious, they will definitely rob you even after the fact of knowing the mistake is on their behalf I didn't have the time nor patient for the drama so they felt proud about their terrible actions when they got away with stealing. Get your Dominican grub on, and sit at the counter drooling at all the stuff freshly made behind the counter. 3/4 of the time I don't know what I'm eating but it's damn tasty. Cafe con Leche here is like liquid sugary crack that destroys many coffee pubs (STARBUCKS) at twice the price. Average tab for one person, $7-8. That's right. Be prepared for the 'itis because after a heaping plate of rice and beans plus whatever carbs and meat you'll be stuffing down, you'll definitely need A) 3-4 cafe con leches or b). a nap to recover an amazing meal at Acosta. Highly recommended if you're broke, hungry and adventurous, not recommended if you have to study or operate heavy machinery afterwards. The food was good. But I gave the one star because they chose to overcharge us. Without realizing, we expected them to return with a paper bill detailing what we ordered with the credit card receipts. However, there was no paper bill only the credit card receipts. We had to ask what was the price of our orders. That's when they said $11 for the rice, chicken dish. On the menu it said $10.50. The waitress never said the price was raised when we inquired about the price $10.50 as we were ordering. Also, the practice of advertising combos on their menu and on their windows is only for to go orders. There was no indication anywhere that it is for take out orders, again verbally communicated by the waitress. What drew us in was the combos deals. Don't bother ordering from here. I have had multiple issues with this restaurant. Placed an order for beef stew and pernil, waited about an hour and the food never arrived. Called the restaurant to ask about my order but they had their music too loud to hear anyone on the phone. Instead of using common sense and turning down the music, they hang up. Tiny diner serving working class Dominican food. By tiny, I mean a five-seat counter and a pair of little tables for two. By Dominican food, I mean PORK. Lots and lots of pork. And rice, and beans. Portions to stay are generous, and the amount of stuff they shovel into the take-out containers is just jaw-dropping. The regular clientele here certainly isn't Canadian amateur street photographers on vacation, and I doubt the taxi drivers, stockboys, and cleaning ladies who get their lunches here have a clue that there's a subset of foodiedom that actively hunts down and cherishes the simple, hearty, and completely unaffected truck driver's food that places like this serve. But it's precisely why I've been in here three or four times. The chunks of pork with red beans and brown rice will fuel you for a day of walking through Central Park or Morningside Heights, and the Cuban sandwich (the Dominican take on it does not seem to include the dill pickle) makes a damn nice late breakfast, if you're envisioning a long day of holiday visiting in the UWS. Both are delicious. Restroom is cramped, but usable. If you're looking for simple, tasty, and utterly cheap food in a genuine diner on the UWS, and if you think you can handle the heaviness of working-class Dominican cuisine, make a point of finding this place. read more

Words cannot express how furious I was at 10pm at night to find out that they were not able to accommodate me without even notifying me. Chicken mofongo!! I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved it! It's one of the few times the food coming out actually looks more appetizing than the pictures. The chicken was falling apart and delicious, although I'd get a few pieces of small bones here and there that were soft enough to chew anyways. The meat broth was deeply savory and went well with the taro-y plantain texture of the mofongo. Unsure if I was eating it correctly, but soo yum ! If you don't like plantains, try their plaintains! They kind of have tart bite to them that makes them feel extra yummy and real. Not a thing like plantains you might get elsewhere. Acosta has been here for over 15 years and by all neighborhood accounts would be considered a staple. Sadly I feel most of the reviews do not shine light on what a gem this spot really is! Let me be clear if you are going to base your entire experience on the customer service more times then not you never going back. However the food is some of the best Dominican Food in city. The owner is almost always at the location and takes pride in his food and boy does it show. The lunch special is the thing to get (yes it's served day and night - more of a portion size then anything) try to 2 or 3 everything is good. Soups are hearty and thick if your looking to fill up on a cold day, this is the perfect mix. Also just call the restaurant to order delivery or pick up. OK, I get it now. I used to think Acosta was all about the empanadas. But on second thought, it's really about the simple, delicious "comida Dominicana." I popped in for dinner recently and grabbed one of the four stools at the counter. The All-Star Game was playing on the flat screen, which is about half the size of this tiny joint. Not quite sure what to order, I opted for the chicken with rice and beans, and was presented with a heaping plate with two pieces of pollo guisado, along with arroz y frijoles. The food wasn't spectacular but it did taste like someone cooked it in their home. Just like Momma used to make, ya know what I mean. This is also the kind of place where you can practice your Spanish. I struck up a conversation with the Uruguayan dude sitting next to me. I told him I thought the empanadas here were pretty good. Mr Uruguay shook his head. "No," he said, speaking as someone born in a country where empanadas are a birthright, like pizza in New York. "You must try the pernil. Here take a bite of mine." I respectfully declined but damn if that pernil -- which was pulled from a pork butt displayed in a pan right inside the window -- didn't look amazing. I wanted to take that bite, but I held back. (It's worth noting that Mr Uruguay's wife was highly annoying -- Don't grab my book without asking biach -- Who lives in NY and marries a South American and can't speak a word in Spanish? Saw stew chicken on El Rey de la Caridad and ordered it for $8 but unfortunately they ran out of it so I placed my order with this spot which ended up being about $12. Like eating in your moms kitchen. I love it. Cozy location! Come get authentic dominican food. Mofongo was great. It's fried plantains mashed with a meat if you're unfamiliar with the food. It's delicious, you eat it with their au jus/broth and let me tell it really has amazing flavor and it's filling. Asopao is a rice porridge dish with meat of choice. It was so goooood. Huge portion! Me and my boyfriend are visiting and were so happy to find this hidden gem. We were able to share these two plates and feel happily full. I'm trying the bacalao tomorrow. Service was great. Everything is authentic here and most of everything is amazing. The chicken is perfect - moist, succulent and well but not over seasoned. The flan is the best I have ever had. The only drawback is that some items apparently are not homemade (like the fried cod which with sometimes has an ice-cube inside). Just ordered from here and OmG was the food bad. First off when I called to place the order it was really noisy loud bachata playing in the background. The girl who answered put me on hold and started singing really loud into the phone. Then once she finished singing she said "I'm ready"....... Should've taken that as a RED FLAG! Was looking for something authentic in UWS. Excited to find this hole-in-the wall place with local old Spanish men chatting in the back table. There's a TV hanging above the counter, playing a movie. It's a small restaurant, like a deli, with a extensive menu of Dominican food. Hot food is kept behind counter and ready to be served by the 2 waitresses. Sandwiches are made using crispy warm bagguettes. We ordered pernil with tostones and cheese mofongo. Pernil, the roasted pork, are full of flavors and moist. Excelente. Tostones, fried green plantains, were served with meat sauce over top. Cheese mofongo are made with smashed green plantains and garlic and served with meat sauce over top and a side salad of lettuce and tomato. This mofongo is dry and plain, so we had to ask for extra meat sauce to flavor it up. I do not recommend it. Dominican food is sure heavy though with much starch. Next time, I will try something else from their top recommendation menu hanging above the window. read more

Pernil is hit or miss depending if they give you the good parts, but I think the goat stew here is certified fire. Staff is very friendly in the sense that they're like ohhh let's just feed this chinito and continue mingling with our regulars but they're always in good spirits and have a smile on their face. This restaurant is one of those places that serves a role in the local community (albeit a community I'm not a part of) but it's overall pretty awesome and a great introduction to Dominican food. read more
