This store is a real trip - you will find one helluva totally random section of cheap crap everywhere. They have a wall full of "Slightly Out of Date" over the counter cold remedies and pain killers, cheap greeting cards, cheap Tee Shirts, cheap baseball caps, cheap school supplies, cheap socks and candy and sunglasses, and more varieties of masking tape than I ever knew existed. How have I never reviewed ACME?? We visit this spot every time we're in Northampton. It's one of those places that you can find everything from school supplies to oddball hardware items to strange looking halloween masks (off season). Perhaps you need gardening tools? Or a Saturday Night Live inspired coffee mug? Perhaps a magnet with something about your horoscope? Rubber gloves? Cheap sweatshirt? Socks? Butt paste for babies? Seriously - this store is a blast. We always find awesome randomness that we didn't know that we needed (or even wanted) before we walked in there. Last year we found fantastic, really old baseball cards (don't eat the gum!!) and this time a combination of a great little gardening item, electrical tape, doorstops and a Northampton magnet! Very cheap and has everything from food to kitchen supplies and pet supplies, they have backpacks, an assortment of clothing, and toys for young children, they have an assortment of cards, and tools from levels to utility knife. They have a lot of rope, such as paracord, and hygiene supplies. I brought 50 bucks, and ended up buying about 20 Christmas gifts, so for 50 bucks you can get all of your Christmas shopping done, everything is discounted, I found a sweatshirt with a dog on it that lights up for $8.00 and then saw that it retailed for $60.00. I forgot about this place. A cheapy store in the middle of Thornes market. My sunglasses ran me 3 or 4 dollars. Cute earrings for $2. Many duct tape choices - cheap!, craft supplies, fridge magnets, hair accoutrements,... lots of crap - some of which you might actually need, and most of which you just may want. It's a small store -but not too uncomfortable to navigate, you won't find large items so much. But the stuff is cheap, covers a wide array and is super conveinient when you figured that you could find or afford what you needed anywhere else in town... read more

Acme Surplus is one of my personal favorite stores in Northampton. Its full of products that have sight defects, or that their company ordered too many of, or just are really cheap. What a peculiar place. Did not see the Road Runner or Wil E. Coyote, but lots of other...stuff. It's much more interesting than your usual dollar store, there's a lot of fun to be had here if you have a sense of the absurd. I may have said to the Chief of Staff, "hey, look at this," five or six times in the 10 minutes we were in here. The prices are good, this cheap headlamp flashlight I use bicycling at night was half the price I paid for online. The Chief of Staff got some cute sunglasses for $3.00, the workers here are somewhat predictably intellectual and over-educated, given the location. read more

Oh geez, Acme. This is like, THE place to go when you're an engineering student. Tools for cheap, caster wheels, springs, pulleys, stickers, doll arms and legs (multi-culti of course. This is Northampton), cards, shirts, dirty-looking soap, wrapping paper... seriously. If you're looking for some sort of supplies in Northampton, hit up Acme before trying CVS or any of the crazy boutiques at street level. Great store to search for totally random selection of cheap crap. Very fun to browse, very random. Items selection is somewhat seasonally appropriate. Christmas cards and decoration in December, beach towels and sunglasses in June, etc. in other isles you might find remnant leather scraps or a very tiny set of screw drivers on a keychain. read more

You never know what you'll find. I bought a ridiculous wool and silk ribbon multicolored winter hat there, made in Nepal. It's usually my first stop when I need office/ school supplies, but they don't always have what I need. I wish their notecard sets were cheaper, but then I would hoard even more of them than I do now. Those creepy anatomically correct baby dolls should disappear. read more

I like to stop in here first if I'm downtown and I have items on my shopping list. You just never know. One thing that I know I'll specifically keep coming back here for is folders. I love that you can buy loose manilla folders here because its a pet peeve of mine when they come in packages that are way more than you need. read more

You wouldn't think that pricey, yuppie, toney Thorne's Market could *possibly* support a dollar store, but in effect Acme is it. Okay, the stuff doesn't actually sell for a dollar, but the stuff you'll find is heavily discounted from anywhere else short of a dollar store, a Building 19 or an Ocean State Job Lot. It isn't so much a place where you can go in *expecting* to find a particular item, as a place where you bop in every month or two, troll the aisles, and see what's there that you might use, and get for half the price you'd pay anywhere else in Noho short of Walmart. read more

Good store with DISCOUNT PRICES. That's the keyword many, many people seem to misunderstand. The store offers mostly normal merchandise - if it is damaged it will be marked as so - at cheaper prices than that of the product's actual producer and seller. Therefore, the prices are not always the lowest around town, but they are crazy affordable and fair. This is a surplus store, not a dollar store or a five star department store... So base your expectations upon that fact. You know that thing that you totally needed but couldn't find anywhere then forgot about? It's here! That's one of the best parts about Acme Surplus, they have their old stock but ALWAYS have new things as well, and it's good stuff, sometimes REALLY good stuff. Brand name art supplies, not-so-name brand art supplies, duct tape in patterns you didn't even know existed, pants that you like that are in your size, oh-crap-my-computer-cord-broke-last-minute replacements, wtf-it-was-supposed-to-be-sunny-today umbrellas, etc. If you need something just plain obscure they have it, usually when you've given up looking for it everywhere else... They also have binders which is how i found the store in the first place, and they're actually affordable (and sometimes even name brand)....so if you're a student who's professor insists you spend your entire meager income on a stupid binder for every aspect of their class, Acme Surplus has got you covered. This should be your first stop for back to school shopping and for the times you need a handful of ball bearings in various sizes.... read more

This place straddles hipsterdom and dollar-store marginality, serving up cheap silverware, yoga tapes, and dismembered doll parts alike without judgement. Prices tend to be very keen; can't complain about two dollar hand tools, five dollar Ethernet cables, or ten dollar backpacks. It's like Dollar Tree, but with nicer merchandise such as camoflauge duct tape and argyle socks. They must pick liquidations really well, because some of this stuff could easily sell for way more in the frou-frou high-street shops. Too bad they don't have a larger space, because if they tirned Acme into a discount warehouse ala Building 19, that would be nirvana for the person trying to stay trendy on Walmart pricing sensibilities. read more

They have a tremendous selection of cards @$1 (many of them would be $3-4 in other stores), stationery supplies, multicolored CD cases, cosmetics, candles, mugs, hardware ... you name it! It's a fun place to shop, and one of the very few stores in downtown Northampton where you can find practical items. read more

Acme is THE place to be in Northampton. The staff is really fun and friendly and you find things no other discount store can offer. Name brands and wacky items all intelligently shelved for easy access. We went three days in a row when we were visiting the area. read more
