It seems that there are two different stores, one that sells home goods and gifts, and then the Fashion/clothes store. This review is about the Clothes store. I needed a dress, and while I could've gotten something at marshalls or burlington, I wanted something well made that didn't look cheap. Something unique, and I found what I wanted here. Good quality fabric, well made womens attire that looked great and got me compliments. The best part of it was that they had a sale section that made my shopping experience very affordable so I walked out of there with two dresses! Until today, I have always loved Thornes Marketplace and especially the Cedar Chest. In August of this year, we had a friend visiting from France. We brought her to the Cedar Chest since it was one of our favorite stores. While checking out, my son left a bag with a necklace he had purchased at another store on their counter. We live 45 minutes away and realized halfway home that we had left our bag at the store. We called them and they said they would put it in lost and found until we returned even if it wasn't for a couple of months. Which brings us to today. We returned to the store and explained the story to the 4 women at the register. They found nothing and called someone at Thornes security who also couldn't find it. All of the staff was very unsympathetic that they lost my son's bag and could use some training in customer service. I bought nothing there this visit and will not be returning. read more

Ooh this place was so cute! We visited the home goods section and I loved looking around for gifts. I ended up finding some great ones in the clearance sections, which were scattered around the store on the outside shelves. My friend picked up some nice bowls and a few other items, and I came away with a book, some air fresheners, a pack of car stickers, and a puzzle, all for about $10. What a deal! I only wish I would've picked up a few more items. The cashiers were friendly and efficient. I would recommend this shop for anyone looking to buy gifts or items for themselves! read more

Cedar Chest is a beautiful store in Thornes Marketplace. They have many giftable items. I loved their kitchen and home section, they also have skin care, unique jewelry, toys, candles. Lots of unique and beautiful items for anyone. Sadly, the people working here need a little extra training on etiquette and customer service. It's unfortunate, none of the other stores at Thornes Marketplace lacked this skill. I was talking to my friend in the store and she couldn't hear me, I took off my mask, for 5 seconds, just so I can tell her something quickly. This lady suddenly yells at me from across the store, "Miss put on your mask now" and points. That was rude. I understand masks are required, and I had a mask, it was off for a few seconds. It wasn't the way to handle the situation. I can't say I'll be returning here again despite how much I love their products. read more

I want to love this place as much as I love the city of Northampton. They have some cool stuff with a lot of space on two different floors in Thorne's Marketplace...but my experience with the staff makes me want to stay far, far away. The vibe in here just doesn't match that of the cool, college town. Snooty/Snotty/Obnoxious staff can sadly wreck the ambiance of what should be a really nice store. Oh well. In these Covid-19 days, I knew who in town sells summer weight nightgowns. But I also knew, I shouldn't so couldn't go TO the store. (My and our line in the sand is if it is not urgent or medically important, not to do it.) So I went online, found yes, they had what I was looking for and I ordered it, thinking I cannot believe I'm ordering from a store about a mile plus away--for shipping (even though that was free). I love Cedar Chest--they have super cute stuff and it's one of my go-to shops when I need a gift for someone. I saw some reviews about unfriendly or unhelpful staff, but I've never experienced any issues. In fact, staff have gone out of their way to help me with various things over the years and have always contributed to community events when asked. As a bargain hunter, some of their prices can be a bit steep for me (which is the only thing keeping me from giving them five stars), but sometimes I can catch a sale and the quality of their products is high. Cedar Chest, in Thornes Marketplace, is one of my favorite stores, of all time. This department store has been around forever! The great thing about Cedar Chest, is that it's never behind the times. Their stock is always changing and always on trend. I know this is going to sound weird, but they have awesome shower curtains. When I got my first place, I drove over an hour, just so that I could buy my shower curtain from this store. I actually ended up buying two that day (along with a bagful of other things). I visit a couple of times every year, and I never leave empty handed. The first floor has a great toy area; offering unique toys, that you won't find in the bigger stores. You'll also find bath products, linens, women's sleepwear, jewelry and scarves on the first floor. There are so many cute things, that can be put together, for that special woman in your life! On the second level, you'll find an assortment of cards, stationery & books. There is a garden section, kitchen items, rugs, shower curtains (!) and other bath items. Don't go here expecting a Macy's shopping experience. This is a small, but unique department store. This is the type of store that people remember fondly, and always return to. I have been coming to this store for years and absolutely love it. They have such a huge selection of items. As some of the other shoppers have pointed out, customer service can be poor. I have had employees just not know the products as well as ignore you when you get up to the counter and carry on their conversation. Like they literally make eye contact with you and keep on talking. In addition, again as other people have pointed out, prices at the Cedar Chest are sky high. I have purchased items there, only to go across the street to Faces and find the same thing, just $5 cheaper. read more

Walking through Thornes Marketplace my friend and I stopped in. I've been here many times and the customer service is always a disgrace... today was no exception. We went to the 2nd floor to look at cards not a single sales person said anything to us. Not only did 2 walk by me to go in the back room but I purchased a card and the very rude man ringing me out said nothing but my total. Customer service is what keeps people away or coming back. People here are pretty snoody. I went to check out and the cashier couldn't bother to say hello or ask how i was doing, or even if I found what I was looking for. Sadly, more a commentary on America today more than this location. Overall nice stuff but pretty overpriced nick nacks. I got a steel bear face that was a bottle opener, pretty cool but I am not sure I have a reason to go back again. I was interested in a chimes set but at $80, never going to happen. read more

If you would like to have your fun shopping day ruined go to the second floor of The Cedar Chest first and the sales people upstairs will make sure you leave the store appalled at their service. Not only was I treated like a piece of trash outside in the gutter, I have never been so looked down upon while I was spending money! The ladies that work on the second floor will make sure you feel terrible shopping there by being some of the snottiest sales ladies in the entire town. You ruined my day and actually made me cry because I was treated so poorly! Refused to help with an order of something you did not have enough of and told me that items for sale were not for sale they were just for show! I will NEVER shop here again! read more

We were interested in the shop based on the dinosaurs in the window. Our son is a Dino fanatic! The shop is two stories and the bottom floor has everything from candles to toys, the second had more toys, rugs, kitchen gadgets, frames... There was a bunch of little cute things all over. Pay attention to the other Yelp reviewers writing that the salespeople are snotty...it's true. We visited at 4:30pm during Pride Day on May 6th, 2017, and were dressed for the occasion, especially with all of Northampton being LGBT friendly. Well, apparently not so for THIS store. My friend and I were dressed as cute high school cheerleaders, and when I turned around I saw a middle-aged saleswoman on the second floor behind the round customer service desk, look directly at us, and give us extremely nasty looks, like: 'why were 'WE' in 'THEIR' store.' I confronted this middle-aged woman and she apologized, but seriously, the damage was already done, imo. If you are LGBT, I would absolutely AVOID this store, as the saleswoman made it clear, that... LGBT ARE NOT WELCOME IN CEDAR CHEST. Further, the prices in this store are absolutely outrageous, for some of the same items you may purchase at Ocean State Job Lot - no exaggeration. I was looking for an outdoor rug to use on my patio, same rugs at Cedar Chest, as at OSJL, three times the price (!) I LOVE this place for cards and gifts! I found a really nice photo album in here once for a friend and she loved it! They also have a very unique collection of greeting cards, home decor, nifty body washes and lotions, etc. Some of their things are expensive but they are very beautiful! They have very nice Christmas decorations during the season. I would definitely shop here again for gifts. read more

I really love Cedar Chest. It's a fun place to browse around and look at all of the interesting home goods and other items, as well as a go-to shop for a quick yet unique gift. While the prices are often a bit higher than what I would pay elsewhere at a "big box" type store, this is understandable considering this is a privately owned, independent business in the middle of Noho. That said, there are some reasonably priced items in every category in the shop, from kitchen gear to bathroom accessories to personal accessories. I recommended this shop to friends and family and tend to take people here if they're visiting from out of town and want to shop. read more

While I enjoy the inventory and most of the staff at Cedar Chest, I had a poor experience the other day that made me rethink spending money there. A snarky younger blonde sales associate on the lower floor on I believe December 23rd mid-afternoon was so rude and short with me while ringing me up because I asked a simple question regarding how certain discounts work. I understand that the holidays are stressful for sales associates and I absolutely do not think the "customer is always right" -- I work in retail in Thornes, too. There is no excuse to be abrasive and rude to a curious patron. She seemed annoyed by my very presence, and when I asked if student and Thorne's employee discounts could be stacked (I wouldn't normally think they could be, but a nice employee upstairs did earlier that day, so I was confused), she responded that you can't consolidate the discounts. I was fine with that. "That's weird," I noted, and before I could finish my sentence saying that someone else had earlier, she cut me off with pure attitude: "It's pretty standard, actually." I was also surprised at how difficult it was to get another associate's attention when I had a question about a product. I was very clearly standing waiting to ask a question but she would not stop her gossip with a coworker until I was forced to interrupt. Like, really? I would love to see Cedar Chest be more selective when choosing their staff in the future, and skip out on moody, arrogant applicants. Hopefully I can revisit this review then. read more
