My husband and I went here after seeing someone else's tattoo from Aces. We walked in on a Saturday and were helped right away. They were friendly, even giving my daughter something to drink! We filled out the necessary paperwork and were getting tattooed within 15 minutes. (I'm sure it's not always this quick on their busier times. We were pleased with the results. They even wrapped our tattoos with a protective wrap which I know has helped my husbands other tattoos heal quicker. Would definitely recommend checking them out. read more

Amazing shop! Nestled among great food establishments and boutiques is where you can find this local icon. If you have heard bad things about this place, it's likely the person spouting such was unreasonable (just being honest here). The shops cleanliness is remarkable. The staff is not only professional but honest and extremely friendly. The work is impeccable. I had a shoulder cover up that I am utterly in love with. I'm updating my review since I was finally the client. But it's still all about the artist Jon. Last fall after watching and talking to tattoo artist Jon McCann add to a friend's tattoo, I wanted to put my idea into motion. I was placed ons cancel list. It seems he's quite popular and appointments are almost 6 months out. Earlier this week I got a message about an open time and took it. Two fellow Yelpers Angie and Chris joined me at my appointment. Both are having work done by Jon. And they wanted to lend moral support. But I honestly think it's about hanging out with Jon who has a great personality and is cute. :) I arrived a little early and Jon had my drawing all ready. We made a few changes and took care of some easy paper work. Then moved into his work space. Love the new shop- it's brighter and more private. Just as the previous spot every thing is very clean and tidy. Jon has a great calming voice and walks a beginner through the steps. And double checks all the colors involved. And what to expect for sensations and the importance of sitting still. I won't lie, I made some odd faces but did not cry. I'm not sure how my two friends can sit through their large projects because my small guy was just enough for me. I highly recommend checking out Ace's and especially Jon. read more

Took my daughter (17) for her first tattoo. I came on a Sunday. After showing them a few pictures of the idea she had Rob drew it up. It was very good and for what she wanted. He helped us determine it need to be smaller. I appreciated they took in consideration of her first tattoo. The place was very clean and we were in and out on a a couple Of hours. Got my tattoo colored here. Came in planning to just make an appointment and Jon had a cancelation. He got me in that night! He free handed the coloring of my tattoo, and it was amazing. He really knows how to do water color tattoos. The other artists at the shop are really good as well. My friends have gotten tattoos here as well and they were really cool. The shops clean and right in the heart of mid town off virgina. The prices are really good. 200 bucks for 3 hours of me squirming around, not the easiest person to tat, being muscular as well. I was so happy with my tattoo and I will be getting all my tattoos done here from now on. Jon is leaving for a little bit to Spain, but he'll back soon! I love their new location right next door to their previous one. This one seems very clean and well lit. Comfortable setup. I was recommended to Jon McCann by friends and am so pleased with his work. I had a mastectomy and reconstruction 3 years ago and have been contemplating getting some tattoo work for a while now. I made the appointments back in March and had my first session last week. I showed him a picture of the style I like and asked him if it was realistic. The colors are so vibrant, I thought they may have been PhotoShopped! Turns out, he knew the artist that did the work and was confident that he could do something similar. When I have had tattoos in the past, they have always been drawn on paper and transferred to the skin. I was nervous when he said he would draw directly on my skin instead of showing me a picture first but he did not disappoint and I couldn't be happier. Having someone tattoo on your breast may be a little awkward but he was perfect. I was comfortable every step of the way. There was a little area on the mastectomy scar that was extremely painful but we got through it. I was grateful that he did the most tender spots first. It made the rest easy. He completed the outline in about 90 minutes. I have two more sessions scheduled for the coloring but not sure we will need them both. *Update 8/23/16* The tattoo is complete and I couldn't be happier. Ended up using all three appointments. At times it was excruciating, just due to the nature of the tattoo. Jon made it as painless as possible and tolerated my grimaces. This was Jon's first time doing mastectomy work and he rocked it. There are so many tattoo shops in town to choose from and customer service. Amaro has no customer service skills and is completely unprofessional and so is the front desk girl. My dudes. I've gotten two tattoos from Jake here at Ace's and he is great. First I time I went I got a Clueless tattoo (bc obviously). I saw Jake's cat photos at his station, he saw my cat tattoo on my arm, and I knew I was in the right place. The second time was on my 21st birthday and all my friends were in class (it was Tuesday and rainy) so instead of sitting at home I got a Beyoncé tattoo (you guys are starting to see where my priorities are). Jake gave me a lil birthday discount because he remembered me and gave me my first legal beer while I got my tattoo, turning my 21st into a pretty fab Tuesday. Got my first tattoo here by Jared in May of this year. He's a pretty intimidating guy. This was my first tattoo so I didn't really know how the process really went. I kept going back and forth about the size of my tattoo with Jared. He didn't at all seem too happy to be dealing with my nonsense. I still kept my cool since I was still pretty nervous about this tattoo. The placement of this tattoo was the back of my thigh. Holy moley, did that freakin' hurt. I have 5 tattoos now and my first tattoo is still the most painful. That feeling will still subside with me. I caught myself twitching a couple of times. The tattooing only lasted 5 minutes. But I did not enjoy any of those 5 minutes. Obviously, the pain didn't stop me from getting more tattoos so don't let that put you off if you are getting your first tattoo. Jared came off pretty scary at first, but during the actual tattooing he was pretty chill. He made sure I was laying comfortably. After the tattoo he even told me he was surprised that I picked such a spot for a first tattoo - since it is known to be painful back there. I was charged the shop minimum for this tattoo - which I did not mind at all since this tattoo personally means something to me. For reference I want to say that my tattoo is 6-7 inches in length and probably 1.5-2 inches in width and is in a form of writing. read more

Every time I have an idea, he takes it and turns it into something so much cooler than I had imagined. He generally sticks to American traditional, but I love that he makes my tattoos more feminine with bright colors and flowers. Ok let me start by saying I rarely feel the need to go on the internet and Give a bad review but people need to be aware. I've got tattoos, have had tattoos, and been to many different tattoo artist and this was the most unprofessional experience I've had. Let me start from when I walked in the shop I got my tattoo around nov 15th, yes it was a walk in. I come to the counter and a male and a female were at the counter. I asked if they had time for a walk in and they said yes. Small tattoo, simple minimum 20 mins(see photos) . Man at the counter didn't want to do tattoo tried to pawn off on another employee, other employee didn't want to do tattoo either so man obliged and said he would do the tattoo. Already a unwelcome experience but whatever it's a tattoo shop I understand the situation. Say down in the chair after a few mins of waiting. He hand drew the tattoo on me, no biggie I like when artist do that actually!! The problem I had is the non friendly part, I'm not asking for a peach or to even have a conversation with me or to be happy, but basic "how are you" "how does this feel" "are you comfortable" should be a given at a tattoo shop. Not once was I asked if it was ok, or if I was comfortable or if it hurt nothing. Never got my tattoo artist name. He asked for mine and I told him mine "Ciara" then asked what his was he said "not Ciara" literally that was the only thing this man said to me the entire time!! Again simple tattoo took maybe 20 mins, but this is where it gets worse! Tattoo hurt like a B****! I've had many tattoos before like I said but this one was by far the most painful, now I know different areas on the body have different levels of pain I know. But the thing is I actually enjoy tattoos I like the pain this one was different, and you'll see why from the photos. Right after and during the tattoo I was bleeding more than I should have, I've never bled that much from a tattoo ever. I ate I was hydrated, no alcohol, there was no reason for that much blood. About 15-20 mins after tattoo the protective clear bandage he put over it was completely filled with blood I had to take it off because the blood was dripping down my arm. 2 weeks after tattoo when things are normally getting better mine looked worse. Puss was coming out and a scab was forming with greenish color. Like I said I've had many tattoos from many artists I've never ever had a issue with a tattoo healing EVER. I follow after care like it's a ritual. Never pick or scratch because I KNOW that causes issues!! I completely left it alone to assure this was not my doing. Now almost 2 months after tattoo there is a scar where the scab was. Looks kinda shitty. All that over a tattoo the length of my thumb. Tattoo was 100$ for a black and white small simple tattoo. The only reason I chose this place was because of the high reviews online. I wanted people to know to look out and ask questions. Like I said never got tattoo artist name, he was bald and he had a small dog with him. Pictures I included were 15 mins after tattoo, 2 weeks after tattoo, and current photo of tattoo. read more

From start to finish great experience. I called many places about tattooing my 17 yr with consent. Many places won't, even though it's legal in NV. When I called they were polite & went over what I'd need to bring as far as paperwork. Rob was our artist he was super chill. He checked to make sure she was doing ok & made sure to cover any missed spots, he was meticulous. I got a matching tattoo (my 6th) and he's by far the best. If we get anymore tattoos the 4 hour drive from the Bay Area is totally worth it. We're both super happy!! Oh and the shop is super clean. read more

Be warned! Front desk dude with long stringy hair is a total wreck, unprofesh, and generally unaware. We set the appointment with dude for my daughter 2 weeks before her 18th birthday. When she went in they had lost her reference image and had not prepared the artwork as they had said they would and then lied about not ever having the reference (I was there and saw them snap it on the shop iPad). Then when she showed them the reference again, they all feigned shock (oh it was a pineapple by the way...how hard) - including front desk boy who I saw take the reference pic - and said that they couldn't do it. WHY did they not say that when we first went in for a consult? Why did they not call us in the 2 weeks to voice their concern? So originally, desk dude asked if they could clean up the artwork a bit and we said sure! But nothing was prepared and they tried to get her to do some generic drawing (but how dare I call it "flash") along the same theme but totally different - and not worth their minimum cost of $80 (but ok when you expect quality in a small but detailed piece). Also note, they say they take cc's but they do not, you have to use their ATM. They were rude, they hung up on me when I called to ask why they didn't have the artwork ready, and my daughter told me later they made fun of my own ink (some of which came from their very shop by the way). I can brush it off, because who cares... but they made my sweet, 18 yo girl feel so unwelcome and were totally douschy toward her! She had been looking forward to this for months, but she left crying. Without a tattoo. Your best bet going here is to have a true consultation (not with desk dude) and to have an open mind about what you want because likely they won't do exactly what you want, or (as other reviewers indicated) they will try to rush you through the process or even say "nobody wants to do this." In fact, through my own experience, Johnny McCann (who has since moved and who is excellent) used my own illustration but told me it's really really rare that they will use any original artwork that a customer brings in. Lucky me. So when we set my daughter's appointment we asked what else we needed to do, they said nothing! But apparently you need to truly follow up with this shop. As talented as they are they are fucking dotards when it comes to service. Gross. And while the assigned artist did eventually apologize to me (after I complained about this experience on social media), which I appreciated, I'm pretty sure it was because I complained on social media. My daughter said they didn't seem so concerned when she was there. So I just want to say, I see all of you. And you might have missed out on a whole new generation of Reno-ites, fresh out of HS who all want ink - lots of it - and are willing to shell out the coin. She sure as shit is never getting tattooed at Aces. But I hope she gets her sleeves done one day and goes back for a Pretty Woman moment. I'll be there for that! read more

I've had my share of tattoos and this place is the worst when it comes to service. There was nobody else when I went in. I had my tat printed out and ready, and the girl at the desk was beyond rude! She took forever to print out a stencil of my design. So after waiting for another 30 mins for the artist to go smoke, he came back and worked on my tat. The only reason why I'm giving this place two stars is because of the quality of my tattoo. The color is perfect and I'm satisifed. No doubt they know tatoos, but they need A LOT of attitude readjustment. They don't accept credit cards, and so you have to use their ATM machine and pay a fee to use it! read more

I have many tattoos from aces and even worked next door for a number of years. In that time I've gotten to know Jared, Rob, Jason, Kevin, Eli and a number of other guest artists. They are all knowledgeable and talented. If you want something done right, go here. Simple as that. Aces specializes in kick ass rock and roll tattoos. Jared is a pro at rad old school style work. Rob is a fantastic portraitist, and all around great tattooer. Kevin does a multitude of styles, and his japanese work is particularly impressive. Eli can do anything you want as well, but ask him about some more painterly styles, as he is a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, and fantastic painter. Jason Freeman recently came out of retirement and is rocking it harder than ever. He also does great traditional work, as well as some cool bay area styles. The shop help will not stroke your ego. They don't need to do every single quarter sized fairy tribal that walks through the door because they are the best shop in town. Sometimes its busy and sometimes they just don't care. But as in most cases, respect gets respect. You're here for a tattoo, not a session with your therapist to talk about your feelings. Unless you're covered in tattoos, they won't give you the time of day. I emailed months in advance because this place was recommended to me. When I didn't get a reply, I called when I was in town. The person who answered was nice, and said they didn't have any walk-ins that day, but to come in to see when they did. I walked there, and when I got there I wish I hadn't. The person who helped me was one of the rudest people I've ever met. Instead of asking me to wait a few minutes until he was finishing straightening his station, he interrupted me several times while I was explaining what I wanted, and I felt like he was looking at me like I didn't belong there. In short, he told me it didn't matter if I emailed in advance, and it would not have mattered if I called either, since they would never take an appointment unless it was in person. They didn't have anything available for weeks, and I was out of luck. It's fine if they were booked, but there were only 2 artists in the store, one of which was tattooing someone. That's not "walk-ins available" like it says on their website. The attitude I was given from the moment I stepped foot in the store told me I wasn't welcome, and I feel that it is because I'm a young-ish girl (21) who didn't have any visible tattoos. I gave two stars, because the portfolios had nice work, so I'm sure that they do a good job, but they lost a client who would be willing to drive 3 hours for every tattoo just for a reliable shop that made her comfortable. Instead, Jen at Reno Tattoo Co. got a client for life. She custom designed a piece for me and I couldn't be happier. I will have many more tattoos from her in the future if possible. She didn't care if I didn't look "the part", they wanted to give me an awesome experience. I wish I could say the same about Aces. read more

It's easy. You get what you pay for. Reno is full of fly-by-night flash art type places, and even a few terrible shops that have inexplicably lasted for years. Aces is not the cheapest, or even the friendliest, but they are the best. Most of my good work has been done by Kevin at Aces, and I continue to travel 400+ miles just to get work done by him. That should speak volumes in itself. The only complaint that typically arises around Aces has nothing to do with the quality of their work. Ive heard people say that the crew can be intimidating or unfriendly. I don't think that's fair, though. They are the best at what they do, they are always plenty busy, and they may not have tolerance for every drunk yahoo that walks in wanting a tinkerbell tramp-stamp or some sweet tribal work with a skull in the middle for good measure. You can imagine how tedious that might be. Its a bunch of motorcycle riding tattooed dudes sitting in a shop listening to loud rock and roll, so in that sense, I suppose it could be intimidating, but they are all genuinely nice dudes. You want custom, high-quality tattoos...this is the spot. read more

These guys really know their stuff! A really knowledgeable staff combined with real talented artists = a great tattoo! I went to Aces on a Friday afternoon, when it is appointment only, and was still able to be seen by Eli. (He's awesome, if you go I recommend him...I know I'll be going back!) I actually came in thinking I'd be getting 2 small tattoos, but the staff informed me that one design may be too intricate for the area that I had originally wanted. That's service! I was on the search for a reputable, clean, skilled tattoo shop with a level of artistic talent that wouldn't make me regret letting someone permanently mark on my body. I asked around and everyone I asked told me to go to Aces. I would HIGHLY reccommend Aces for anyone who is looking to get a tattoo at a reasonable price from a very skilled artist. All of the tattoo artists knew what they were doing, and were able to speak intelligently about how they would or would not reccommend a certain design. My friend wanted a new piece for her shoulder but did not have it totally worked out on placement or design. Within minutes of talking to Jake, he drew it out for her. With his reccomendations on placement and size, she came out with something she is completely happy with. I needed my foot tattoo fixed, and again, Jake had a vision. He was able to make us both feel comfortable and helped us through the pain with comedic conversation. My only complaint about this place is how difficult it is to get in - which I take as a good sign. After speaking with someone on Sunday about making an appointment, I was told to just walk in on Monday. When we did, we had to make an appointment 4 hours later. However, I always like to think, if it's on your body, it's worth waiting for someone who will do the best job. read more
