Entering a Class V.
Joe L.

Great day rafting on the upper Gauley with a few Class V rapids. You can tell they have been doing this awhile from their check-ins, bus transportation, raft readiness and deflation (afterwards). They explained proper positioning in the rafts (for the inexperienced), what the route entails, and a little bit of history as well. The stop for lunch halfway through was done nicely. They had burgers on the grill and enough for seconds. This is rated as one of the top rivers to raft in the U.S./world but I would have loved a little more action. That being said, it was a great time. (Went the weekend after Labor Day.) There's a photographer who is on a kayak to grab photos and videos. There were 5-6 rafts per time slot and because he is responsible for all the rafts, our raft was neglected in more than half the shots. They were either very abrupt or shaky. He did get some good shots of other rafts. Because of this, I didn't purchase the photos or video. If you plan on rafting the Gauley, you can't go wrong with Ace.

Wow. You want a nice ride down the new river gorge. Well go to Ace Advemtures. They were extremely friendly and easy to organize. Booked online and showed up to check in for our details for the trip. We did the half day lower new river trip and it was full of all the rapids you could ask for. Our guide was super informative and kept us all calm and organized as we navigate the rapids. The facility has everything you would need in case you forgot something. Also besides rafting, you can check out so many attractions at the resort. This was so fun we came back again the next day to enjoy the thrills! Plenty of parking available and clean shower houses to use after the trip. Go enjoy yourself in the wild and wonderful west virginia!

Ace Adventure Resort is THE place to take your family on vacation in WV! Nestled in this beautiful mountain range the New River Gorge welcomes everyone skilled and beginner to experience what adventure means to the great outdoors. The staff at Ace always puts safety first-they are knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and attentive-if not, I wouldn't have been able to be talked into going down river in a Ducky with my then 8 yr old. We had the best time white river rafting! The pics don't include the most memorable and exhilarating rougher parts of our journey but we managed through in full confidence our guides knew exactly what to do. The obstacle course was pure awesomeness! The cabins are clean, well-maintained and come with a personal hot tub on the back patio. I'm excited to return and highly recommend!

"Had an amazing rafting trip with the family today! Couldn't have asked for a better guide--Nugget is truly the greatest. With 20 years of experience, he made the adventure safe, fun, and unforgettable!"

Nothing gets better than ACE. The staff all around are very helpful. From the workers who helped with the reservations/payments to the guides who lead the adventures. The guides not only lead the adventures in a fun way, but they also do a fantastic job recommending places to go in the area (trails, towns, jet boat rides, Hawks Nest State Park) They are all very funny and knowledgeable of the WV area. Good vibes all around and smooth sailing with ACE. Overall, white water rafting and zip-lining were my favorite activities, but you can't really beat the delicious wood fired pizza at the water park, it's to die for. There is also an amazing overlook located in ACE, the "Concho overlook." AMAZING VIEW!

Lower New river full day rafting

Loved the rafting! Had instructor Alex and it was an amazing experience. We did the Lower New River Full Day Best Experience. It was really fun, the first half of the trip was calm water, then we stopped for a lunch (which was really good!), then after lunch we did the rapid part of the river. I think this trip would be good for adventurous beginners or intermediates. 5 out of 5 stars for this. The campsite was pretty good. It was very convenient to be close to the rafting. The bathroom facilities were very private & clean which was nice. The actual campsite itself was not very private though. It was pretty much just a big giant field that was divided into different campsites. Wasn't wooded at all. But overall it was still good - if you prioritize being close to excursions it's a good idea to camp here. If you'd rather camp somewhere with trails and wooded areas, I would go somewhere else.

Total bullshit. Ruined my whole day and tainted my visit to West Virginia and New River Gorge. Don't bother camping here unless you want to be moved to a shitty site with more noise and less privacy that you didn't pay for and don't want. I spent a considerable amount of time researching third-party websites for views and reviews of specific sites before booking. They granted me the indignity of having to camp literally right next to the one I paid for and reserved in advance while someone else camped in the site I booked and was looking forward to. They claim they overbooked, but it was a different site than mine and on a previous day - making it entirely irrelevant to my reserved site the day of - they just couldn't be bothered to ask the person in my reserved site to move now that others were opened. Instead of asking the double-booked person to move to the one I was given, they made it my problem. Extremely unprofessional and just plain wrong. It's ridiculous that they even have a system which supposedly allows for double-booking in the first place. I never would have booked the site they replaced mine with. I checked out the site but never checked in (the RV people were right on the other side of the trees behind my site, something I had intentionally tried to avoid), ended up camping for free at Grandview Sandbar Campground instead. If I wanted that site I would have reserved it, but I didn't and would not have. Completely defeats the purpose of making a reservation if they aren't going to honor it. Little Beaver State Park Campground is run by incompetent and inconsiderate people. Flawed booking system and inept individuals ruining a public institution. Total joke, shame on them. "We hope you don't mind". Damn right I mind, you took my money for a reservation you didn't keep! I hated my non-stay with a passion and will never be back.

The parkway, which is America's longest linear park, runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties. It runs mostly along the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. *The Parkway is free to drive, with a posted (and honored) speed limit of 45 MPH. It is enjoyed by people in automobiles, on motorcycles, bicycles, and some walkers. The road is curvy, goes up and down mountains, and often does not have guardrails along areas with steep drop-offs. *There are no service stations on the Parkway, so make sure your vehicle has gas and you've had it serviced. There are some towns off the Parkway, but this IS a rural area. *the National Park Service maintains 8 campgrounds along the Parkway. Most do not have showers. There are also some Visitor Centers, with park rangers who can provide information on local hikes and other activities. *Be wildlife aware. We just spent 3 nights camping and hiking, and only saw geese, but there are black bears, snakes, and other critters in the park. *Autumn is absolutely gorgeous with the colorful leaves, but weekends get crowded.

Ok, my name is Jennifer and I'm a Ridge addict. My family and I have driven the Blue Ridge since I…read morewas a baby....so over 50 years. Since moving to NC it had become my goto for something to do on a Saturday. No...really. I drive out to Stuart, hop on the Blue Ridge and the toughest decision is North or South. If I want to go to Chateau Morrisette for lunch or hike around the lake at Peaks of Otter I head North. If I want to drive out to Pisgah its South. Either direction will take me aling one of the most beautiful roads I know. At each turn you are awarded with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge mountains (part of the Appalachia). You can see some stunning floral displays when the mountain laurel is in bloom and watch a variety of critters out for a nosh. The speed limit varies from 35 to 45 so holding a steady 40 is perfect for catching a chipmunk racing across the road or having plenty of time to stop for a herd of whitetail deer. Yesterday I had my first emergency in 50 years. We got a double flat right around milestone 107. We barely had coverage to dial AAA and were then at the mercy of fortune. As we were unable to pull out of the road, I chose to be the one to direct people around the car. I could have cried for joy as these wonderful folk restored my faith in humanity. So many stopped to make sure we were ok. I have to give a very vocal shout out to ine of the parks service rangers. Her name is Tabitha and she turned into our Guardian angel. She called in the accident to her dispatch and kept an eye on us till the tow came. If you find yourself wanting to just do something...especially during this Covid period when there arent a lot of options..take a drive. Decide for yourself... North or South. Either direction will lead you on adventure. Make sure to stop at one of the main areas to pick up a Blue Ridge book...this will become your Blue Ridge ' bible' as it will give you a milemarker by milemarker guide. Stop by the Music center near the Va/NC border or see what I mean by Peaks of Otter. Go see the highest mountain on the East coast (Mt Mitchell) or check out the arts and crafts center. Be aware of your season. It gets cold in the mountains earlier than the valley. If you head towards Pisgah in late October..the road may be closed due to snow/ice. Same actually near Peaks. The Blue Ridge is usually very busy in Summer with folks headed to Asheville, Boone or the Smokies Just remember the rules: take nothing...leave nothing. Rediscover Nature or just unwind for an afternoon. I promise you WON'T regret it.

Hidden away in the mountains of southern VA, is a great lake with water that looked crystal clear! You can paddleboat, kayak, canoe and swim! The swim spot is more than twice the size of Lake Anna State Park. And surrounded by the beautiful mountains. I hiked the 6 miles around the lake with the stop off ay Molly's Knob. It's gorgeous! I had preplanned this trip to see these parks down here many months ago. While, I camped in a tent at Claytor Lake, I rented a Yurt for two nights here at Hungary Mother. I've never stayed in a Yurt before and I loved it! It was hot though, don't get me wrong. That Yurt was like a volcano tube all day and 1/2 the night. Luckily I was gone during the daytime and due to location, around 3am to 6am it wasn't very hot at all. LoL. Mountains make the difference! The Yurt was spacious and lovely. I'll rent again in the future. Employees were nice. Gift shop was amazing. Unlike most other state parks, this one had long trails. Like I said, one was 6 miles..usually, at other parks, they have .5 and .9 mile trails that you peice together to make a 6 mile trail. Those who've been, know what I mean. My favorite VA State Park is Sky Meadows. Perfect for me and only 25 min from my house. Hungry Mother is second place winner for me!! Love it!

It was close to lunch time, so we decided to go to check it out and have a picnic lunch there, lake-side. Road signage to the main part of the park wasn't great, and our GPS took us to the campground which was a few miles from the Visitor's Center. A camper sent us in the right direction. We stopped at the Visitor's Center, paid the $7 parking fee, spoke with staff, and picked up a map. We learned from staff that Hungry Mother was one of VA's original six state parks. It's known for its woodlands and placid 108 acre lake. It offers miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating (including rentals), a beach (with concessions in-season), camping and cabin rentals, and special events and programs. Our goal though was to take a short walk and to find a place to eat our picnic lunch! We found the Lake Trail loop, which is a 5.7 mile hiking and biking trail. The first mile parallels Park Blvd, and was gently rolling and relatively flat. Plus, it had picnic tables lake-side! Hungry Mother State Park was a pleasant place to stop during our travels. We hope to return in the future to explore it further. Slight mark-down in rating due to insufficient signage and for charging $7 for parking for a short visit and even when most amenities were still closed off-season. This is state of VA policy, not specific to Hungry Mother.
