To my surprise, I left being told that my front struts were showing signs of leaking and that suspension repairs might be needed. Hearing that a nearly new vehicle may have suspension problems is concerning, especially when there were zero symptoms leading up to the visit. Wanting a second opinion, I took the car to a Toyota dealership for an inspection. After a full evaluation, the dealership found no leaking struts, no suspension defects, and no abnormalities requiring repair. That discrepancy raises an obvious question: how does a car go from allegedly needing suspension repairs at one shop to having a clean bill of health from a Toyota dealership? The GR86 is not your average commuter car, and its suspension setup is more specialized than what many general repair shops work with daily. In my case, the car is also not driven hard or abused. It's used normally, with no track use, no canyon driving habits, and no aggressive treatment that would reasonably point toward premature suspension wear. It's also worth noting that summer performance tires naturally wear faster than standard all-season tires, and can sometimes show uneven wear patterns due to the factory negative camber built into the suspension geometry. That alone is not necessarily an indicator of a mechanical issue. While I can't say exactly what led to the diagnosis, the experience left me questioning whether there was enough familiarity with this platform to accurately distinguish normal characteristics from actual mechanical issues. I understand that mistakes can happen in any shop.
