Stephanie is the best! I had a few questions a month ago about the tax implications of selling a property and she walked me through everything in a clear and easy to understand manner. But she reached superhero status this week. Over the weekend, I got a letter from the DC tax office saying that I owed a ton of money and used language like "tax lien" and "seizing assets" and I completely freaked out for two days until I could call them about it on Monday morning. HAPPY TAX DAY! Woah, that's probably the first time someone has said that and not been sarcastic. Well that's what happens when you finally find someone good to do them for you. Gone are the days of TurboTax and H&R Block, with Accounting 4 DC I am confident my taxes are being done right. Now, doing your taxes through a CPA isn't cheap but if your portfolio is like mine and is just too complicated to do yourself, I think going to Stephanie at Accounting 4 DC is well worth the money. Her knowledge and patience are worth their weight in gold (or in IRS auditors). She did my personal taxes and business taxes, worked with me via email while I was out of the country, conducted a conference call with me and my business partner, and explained everything along the way -- and I had a lot of questions since it was my first time filing business taxes. They give you a price guide when you contact them before putting a deposit down via PayPal so you know about how much your total will be. I found their rates reasonable given their expertise and comparable to the last CPA I went to several years ago out of state. Note: Accounting 4 DC is a small operation so you have to secure their services early in the year (I believe the cut off is March 15) to guarantee you're done by April 15. Honestly, I'd love to tell you what I think of Accounting 4 DC, but I couldn't get in through the front door. I've been working with another CPA & am interested in switching. I needed a quick conversation to make sure my issue was something they could help with (given that they're a relatively small shop and, as you can imagine, there are many different kinds of tax needs & the problem I have now is fairly specific). They refused to even chat for a couple of minutes over the phone without a $100 appointment, which is bizarre and not something I've seen at another CPA firm (or any other client services business for that matter). I understand they get paid for their knowledge and experience and can't go giving it out for free, but that isn't what I was asking -- I simply wanted them to hear what my problem is and tell me if it's something they can work on. This was a huge red flag for me, and I'm opting to move on. UPDATE: I appreciate your taking the time to respond, but honestly the process you outlined was not followed. I was not asked any questions about the nature of my tax question (whether it was personal or business related, regarding a prior return or future services, etc.), but instead told that absolutely nothing would be reviewed or answered until I agreed to a $100 initial meeting. This seems a little absurd... would you pay $100 to go to a restaurant before they let you look at the menu? As I mentioned, I have a CPA and am in client services myself and work with an attorney on a similar basis, and this is not an industry standard practice & have never encountered it. I think Yelpers should be aware they don't need to pay $100 to know whether or not a CPA can even work in the field of accounting they need... And, the quite frankly, the fact this is a business practice of yours is questionable and suggests folks should move on and find another company. read more

I'm not sure exactly how to review. It's obvious that most people have a good experience with this company. We didn't have a terrible experience, but we were disappointed with the the end result.. We were filing our personal and business taxes through Accounting 4 DC. We have an S-corp with multiple cities, which may have made it more difficult. In the end, there was a pretty significant error that appeared to us to be something that should have been flagged immediately by this office. I'd recommend Accounting 4 DC. I used them to do amendments to the most recent year tax returns, so my experience is likely a little different than most. I'm not sure about this, but it seems like outside of the normal tax season they might be a little less-staffed than Jan-April. Without going into all the details, they were a bit rushed in doing my returns and wound up doing them wrong, and then took longer to correct them than had been originally promised. BUT they adjusted for that in billing me, without my even asking. And I found that Stephanie really knew her stuff. Because she was doing an amendment of returns I'd prepared myself, she tried reconciling a lot of my original (crappy) assumptions and math,mostly to try to understand my logic, which I thought was impressive. It's a little late, but I'm writing this review now because I just received a W-2 from my employer and it made me realize tax season has officially started. I first used Accounting 4 DC for the 2010 tax year. Although I had always done my own taxes previously with tax software (H&R Block), I was a little overwhelmed for the 2010 tax year-- I moved from a state without state income taxes, started a new job, had to deal with rental income, student loans, and a temporary living situation in VA. I searched Yelp! and found them with their 5-star reviews. My experience with Stephanie and the firm was nothing less than exceptional. Everything was handled professionally, in a timely manner, and she took really good care of me. The peace-of-mind that an experienced professional was well worth the service fee-- which was much lower than going to a group like H&R Block, Tax Liberty, or another Big-Box tax preparation service.
