The chips are comparable to standard "restaurant-style" options you'd find at a grocery store. The quesadilla is a bit unusual--there's no integrated mix of cheese and protein. Instead, the components are kept separate, which explains why the menu describes it as "baked." I initially thought that was odd, but it makes more sense now. We were in town for a meeting at the largest employer in NW Arkansas, I'm sure you can guess who that is. When we arrived at the hotel late, we wanted to grab a quick dinner and I had eaten at an Abuelo's in Orlando many times. Felt like that was a solid choice for us since we knew it was not a gamble. Rick was our server and he was helpful and friendly. He brought out their trio of salsas with hot tortilla chips that felt like they were made minutes before. Not sure if they are, but they did taste fantastic! I love their queso here, and they had a Diablo one that I hadn't had before but we decided to get the dip trio- queso, Diablo queso, and guacamole. What an epic decision! They came with more tortilla chips but also chicharrones which was sturdier and could hold up to the thicker Diablo queso and guacamole. I couldn't stop eating the salsa and dips. I chose to get a combination plate, with an enchilada, taco, and tamale. Rick mentioned they had a mashed potato side that was tasty- not expected for a Mexican restaurant but I decided to take the recommendation. Rick came through, honestly I could've eaten just the dips and potatoes and had been super happy about it. I overate, which was a problem but in a good way because I fell asleep immediately after we got back to the hotel. We were doing a crazy travel week where we were in 5 states, two countries for meetings, so not a lot of rest. It's part of a chain but this one was clean, friendly, with great execution on the food. Rick was clutch with more salsa and chips which in the end was my undoing but I didn't care. Visit here and make sure you try their dips, and the mashed potato side which may have been one of the best things I had all week. Dead serious! The next time I go I'm going to ask for no rice and beans and just get these crazy mashed potatoes. First of all, we love the atmosphere! Staff is always pleasant and friendly. The restaurant is clean inside and out, including the bathrooms! There is something for everyone on the menu! First off a place that calls itself a Mexican Restaurant Embassy is pretty darn pretentious. Perhaps that is why it feels it can charge what I found to be some of the highest prices for typical Mexican fare at a chain restaurant. We skipped the drinks since they had no prices for any of them - really annoying. The complimentary chips and the salsa sampler were very good. We both ordered the two piece enchilada platter. I got the cheese and beef and my wife the chicken and avocado enchiladas. All were very tasty. One nit - I did not like that they pretty much mixed the rice into the refried beans which made it hard to separate them (I did not care to eat all of the beans). Service was super friendly as I was early for my dinner meeting and spent a half hour at the bar with a beer where the bartender brought me warm chips and their three salsas while I waited. It wasn't busy but I did their call-ahead seating and it did a great job of keeping me informed and texted when the table was ready. We were seated in a corner booth that was quite comfortable. A friendly waiter took our orders and brought drinks. Dinner didn't take too long to be prepared and was served with help from a tray-carrying robot. Pretty slick! It seemed like it was a little pricey for a Mexican restaurant $8.50 for a tap beer. The food was OK.

I was seated at the bar which I don't normally like. However, I came when it was busy and I didn't feel like waiting. The red salsa here is really good. I loved the tomato salsa. You can taste the peppers that were ground up in the salsa and it had just the right amount of heat. The green Chile salsa was good too. Though I thought it has a little sugar in it which was ok I ordered the three beef tamales with refried beans and cilantro lime rice. The three tamales were excellent. They were a little small but the texture of the beef was smooth and ground up. I actually liked the texture. It also had just the right amount of heat. What I didn't like was that they melted cheese over the top, which made them dry. However, I put that amazing salsa over the top of it which made them taste really good! I think if this has some enchilada or Chile verde sauce on top it would take it to another level. I wasn't a fan of the Chile lime rice or the refried beans. They just didn't go with my tamales. It was my first time here a couple of weeks ago and I was wowed right when I walked in the door. I loved the aesthetic of the place. It feels like you're in a courtyard in Playa Del Carmen! They have a huge menu, but I was excited to try the dip trio which included queso, salsa and guacamole. Their spicy salsa was fantastic!! Abuelos has gone downhill since it first opened years ago. I have been coming with my family for probably 15 years and we used to go at least twice a month. I do enjoy the physical location and the staff is always nice. The queso, for me, is the most redeemable part of this restaurant. They've elevated the menu design and the description of the food items to make them sound premium. They're not. They are over priced. My food came out crusted over from sitting under the warmers. Oh, and it was lovingly delivered by a service ROBOT. Margaritas lacked flavor. My wife's salad had a stale taste. (Likely the shell) . Our waiter was kind, and she felt ' new' . Not her fault on the food quality, but probably on the service . We DID NOT take home leftovers. We went there today because we had not been there in about 5 years, and remembered a good experience from a more elevated restaurant. Not any more. Unfortunately, no plans to return. Not worth it AT ALL. We usually go to Las Fajitas. They are more fairly priced and the food is significantly better. They may not have the ambiance of Abuelos, but the food is much better. read more

Awesome food. Began with the dip sampler. It was all good but the Chile con queso was phenomenal. I generally have fajitas but had the Durango burrito. The beef was terrific. My wife had the chile relleños and my daughter had the quesadilla al horno. They both really liked their food. We will definitely be back next time we are in town. read more

We both actually ordered the same thing and it was amazing! We ordered the lunch special enchilada/chile relleno combo plate. The relleno was an actual Anaheim chile and had the perfect batter. I ordered a margarita on the rocks and again, our server asked questions as to what I liked or didn't like and said he could make one that I would love.
