The Canary - Up close and personal with my apricot and coffee bean drink.

Whether you're the world's biggest gin fan or you're still unsure about the stuff, the Canary Gin…read moreBar is an absolute must when in Bath for libations. The ground floor offers 200+ gins and the Cocktails of Gin Austen menu (oh, yes, you read that right - it's "gin's transatlantic journey to New York"; it's "gin of a different persuasion"; and they're all just £9). Gin is not my preferred liquor, but these extremely well crafted, balanced, flavorful drinks have me wondering if my previous feelings about gin were totally misinformed. The Big Apple (featuring Bath Gin [what they make here], hopped rhubarb Bath Gin, apple schnapps, escubac, lime juice, and tonic) is really refreshing, but it's the Little Italy that I felt the most feelings for: Bath Gin, coffee-infused campari, cocchi torino, and apricot liqueur. The presentation is straight out of a magazine, the ingredients are all delicious, and it packs a serious wallop. "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Is that too much for a drink or a bar? Ahhhh, you'll see what I mean when you check it out. Upstairs, The Distiller's Bar, has more gins and cocktails but I never made it up there. I liked to tuck into the downstairs right when they opened with a good book and a good cocktail and people watch. The owner was frequently (always?) there bringing the merriment, too, so the atmosphere always felt quite cheery and welcoming!

The Bath gin was delicious and wonderfully smooth. I had a G&T, which they made with an artisinal tonic and tossed a bay leaf in the glass... if you're a gin fan, this is the place for you. By the way, Bath gin price isn't listed - it costs £7/single. If the downstairs is crowded, try the upstairs - it covers the whole length of the downstairs and was pretty empty when I was there, while the downstairs was packed. They do have a few bottled beers (and Peroni on tap) and whiskeys and vodkas if you're not a gin fan... but why wouldn't you be?

I know it's a restaurant chain, but The Botanist makes me smile. Every time we come here:…read more1) We eat REALLY well! (... and somehow wish we'd ordered more despite being pleasantly full) 2) We get lost going to the bathroom (... and get reprimanded by the staff) It's become our thing, really. I'll echo some of what I said in my previous review: The Botanist in Bath offers a beautiful, minimalist, plant-heavy, environment. We've always sat on the second-floor mezzanine underneath the incredibly high-vaulted ceiling. Because of this cavernous space, the acoustics can be a bit all-over-the-place especially when it's packed and they've got live music going! Any iteration of their menu offers many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. We particularly enjoy: + the Rhubarb & Sage Spritz (if you like gin and tonics, this isn't to be missed; it's slightly fruity [without being sweet] and herbaceous [without being herbal, if that makes sense]) + the Vegan Board: There's SO. MUCH. GOING. ON. HERE. Definitely something for everyone, but the stand-outs for us continue to be the incredibly satisfying Bang Bang Cauliflower (which have a crunchy exterior and pillowy soft inside), the Giant Couscous salad (which somehow feels so light in comparison to other things on the board), the Houmous (so creamy, so flavorful; you're going to have a hard time wanting to share this!), and the Crispy Mushrooms (which are fried in a light polenta coating and come with a truffle/mustard mayo dip; it's okay that you love the dip more than you love the mushrooms - you can order more of it!). ^ you can order all of these things individually too! + [if they have them] the Sweet Chili Fries: perfectly golden-fried and topped with a sticky sweet and spicy sauce, coriander, and spring onions? Moreish! Get some to share even if you think you've already ordered too much food. + the Banoffee Sundae: made with caramelized banana, plant-based vanilla ice cream, Biscoff chocolate sauce and cookie crumb, it's absolutely indulgent and a little phallic looking. It's a reliable spot for shareable food with friends in a beautiful atmosphere. What more could you want?

The fish and chips and baked camembert were fantastic. The "chips" were well crisped and came out hot. The fish was delicate, flaky and tasty and the tartar sauce balanced and filled with herbs and pickles. The chicken katsu was dry and over cooked; it looks good but isn't worth it. The fried onion (think blooming onion if you're an American) was pretty good but nothing unique. The drink menu is extensive. They are well made and the bartenders can steer you towards what you'll probably enjoy most. I did think they tended to be a bit light on the alcohol, but hey, it's the UK! Overall enjoyable and would recommend - especially if I'm the hunt for good fish and chips or baked cheese!

From the entrance you get the impression that this is somewhere to drink, not somewhere to be seen as the low lighting and hidden rooms make clear. This creates a delightful ambiance with the bar staff adding character in skinny ties and retro braces. The drinks can be hit or miss, however if your taste buds prefer things a specific way the bar staff will gladly take a drink back to tailor it to your tastes - just be confident enough to ask! A definite must for a fan of cocktails.

But we decided to head in, as it didn't look too cheap and trendy, and we weren't disappointed. It's a comfortable, cosy club with nice decor in a relaxed style. Definitely not trying too hard, but still getting it just right. There is just one small bar, with only room for a few people around it. Sub 13 is definitely a drinker's bar, and a bar for friends -- it's not the place to grab an anti-freeze coloured WKD and be noticed. It operates on the principle of lots of little tucked away rooms, nooks and crannys to hide your group away and have a nice chat. The music is jazzy/bluesy, not over powering and not cheesy. The drinks are expensive -- around £8 for a cocktail, which is fine if you're in NYC and it's been sieved through a platinum martini pour. But the cocktails here were nothing special, though both barman and manager made a great show of making them. Really, it just took a long time, and the end result was lacklustre. Eventually we went to vodka and tonics, for the same price, but with much more alcohol, and some nice Grey Goose or Absolut. The nice thing about the cocktails is that they weren't made to measure -- a careful, wobbly pour of 35 ml takes some of the magic away from cocktail making, so it was nice to see the barman just put a great dirty slug of vodka in the glass, and properly lemonung the rim of the glass as well. The smoking area/garden is very nice, coming up some stairs to a terraced area with tables and chairs. But the really special bits are the little tucked away rooms with fab candle light, gorgeous comfy leather sofas and intriguing patterned wall paper. An excellent venue for a party, a works event, or even an intimate chat with a few friends or a lover. Sub 13 gets a definite recommend from this reviewer!
