Decided last minute to treat myself for my birthday with some tattoos I've been wanting for several years. A coworker gave me several names of shops in the area and after calling them all, I decided to come to Absolute Art. Decision was based on how incredibly friendly Sam was during the initial call, how helpful and accommodating they were by fitting me in the following day, and the pricing. I arrived and everyone at the shop was very friendly, professional, and welcoming. The shop was also extremely clean and well kept. I met with Keith and he did a phenomenal job. One thing that really stood out was how important it was for their clientele to be happy and it wasn't just an in and out, "next" type feeling. Keith was also extremely knowledgable in aftercare procedures. I first came to this shop in 2012 and got an all day tattoo from Brian Bruno. I have been collecting for a while by then and felt he was the best, most professional tattooer I have ever sat with. When the time came to get more work, I signed on for an 18 month project and haven't regretted it! I even brought my daughter in to get tattooed by Brian! He's the best! Professional, fast, efficient, and well-worth his fee. He has a good, healthy attitude and is just great dude, which in the long run might mean even more than the top quality work he does. The other guys (Mike Rennie) in the shop are great too! I get to see a lot of their work while I'm there and overhear their professional interactions with customers. They really go out of their way to make sure customers get the tattoo they deserve. They also have renowned artist from around the world come in and guest from time to time. I have been lucky enough to collect from Timothy Hoyer a few times as well. It's sad to see this last-of-the-old-school shops move, but I'm confident that it'll be even better at the new location! read more

I got my first "real" tattoo here back in 2003 with Jason Hobbie (sp?). It still looks great and I get alot of compliments on it. It has a lot of color that has aged well and the outline is still clean. He also did a good job on placement on my body as it has grown well w/ my body shape. (It is on my upper right shoulder blade, about 8" long and 4" at its widest) I remember him being patient as it took over 4 hours and I was getting tired. When I moved down to Richmond for graduate school, I was told by a host of people that Absolute Art was the best tattoo shop in the city, and that I should check it out. I was wanting to start the process of covering up two very bad half-sleeves that I had gotten done early in college. Many shops just turned me away, saying that there was no way they could cover up an already existing half-sleeve. The very first day I went in there, I showed them my crappy half-sleeves, and Dave Boisineau immediately said he could get it done. I was still a bit unsure as to how such a big cover up would work out; as most people cover up an individual tattoo, not a huge piece like a half-sleeve. When we started though, I was amazed by his sketch and everything he has done with my first "new sleeve" so far, and as I get into the closing stages of the cover-up process, I couldn't be happier. I never expected that such bad work could be turned into such an epic sleeve. Dave Boisineau is a genius, straight up. When my friends see what my sleeve looks like now, they can't believe that it is so awesome when they think about how crappy it used to be. What is even better about Absolute Art is that Dave Boisineau, Brian Bruno (tattoo artist and owner), Jason Hobbie, and the other guys working there are all extremely talented and very experienced...so no matter what artist you get, you are going to get great work that will make even other tatted-up people come up to you and ask where you got your work done. It's really awesome that I was able to put the time in and be able to fix such terrible work and turn it into a piece that is absolutely gnarly and makes me wish I had gotten it in the first place. I can't recommend Absolute Art enough; because as being quite experienced with getting terrible work done by terrible tattoo artists, it's great to finally find a shop full of guys who will charge you a good price for tattoos that you (and they) are actually proud of. No matter how big or small your tattoo needs may be, you'd be remiss to land at any other shop in Richmond or in the state of VA for that matter. Absolute Art is where it's at. read more

David told me one price, wrote it down on a card. I came back and got the tattoo and he charged me triple! I showed the card where he wrote the price down but he claimed it took longer than he expected and charged me $150 hr. When I said this was unacceptable he locked the doors and called the police. The police said if I didn't pay him the $500 there would be a warrant for my arrest. Complete scam and rip off!!! read more

My friend and I went to get matching tattoos; hers healed horribly muddled but mine is perfectly fine. I also got another tattoo that day that turned out great. I don't know what went wrong with hers. The staff was mostly friendly, but the girl who worked there was very rude and condescending. I got a tattoo here about four years ago. The ink distribution stinks, the artist dug waaay too deep and left a raised, irritated scar, and my skin was burning for weeks afterward. I'm planning on getting it removed because it's so bad, I don't even want it covered up-- I just want it off. If they've changed ownership or something since then, I suppose maybe it's worth checking out a portfolio or two, but buyer beware. . . I guess I should have been wary of a tattoo shop so close to a college campus! read more
