Wow, this place is an absolute banger and a vibe. Dimly lit, communal tables, feels like another country like Portugal or Brazil. Something along those lines since Abraço means hug in Portuguese. I'm in this phase right now where I get annoyed when I see latte art on a cappuccino because, honestly, I don't think you can have the proper foam for a cappuccino if you can also do latte art on it. I prefer the 90s style ones. So I went into Abraco and asked for an extra-dry cappuccino, because that's the only way I know how to get a real one. (Yes, I know how pretentious that sounds, but as an ex-barista, I'm allowed.) The barista told me they couldn't do that, which was annoying. I got my cappuccino, saw the latte art, and got annoyed again, but then I was totally humbled when it turned out to be super foamy and very perfect. So, to the worker... my bad for doubting you. You got me. The vibe here is really nice. They play good music, the seats are comfy, and the overall atmosphere is great. There is a weird sign that says something like, "If you are waiting for someone, do not sit at a table to wait for them." I hope that's just there for show and not something they actually enforce because policing customers like that feels a little much. All that aside, it's a solid spot with a very foamy cappuccino. This neighbourhood spot is the perfect coffee shop to sit with some friends and hang out. The coffee is amazing and there's a lot of seating (and variety in seating so you can find whatever kind of space you need). Pastries are baked fresh throughout the day in-house and the smells are irresistible! The vibes here are immaculately curated: no laptops are allowed, high quality glassware (in fact they insist that you don't use a disposable cup unless you're actually taking it to go) and they have just the nicest people working there. It's clear how they've been open for decades and there's still lines out the door when they open. On weekends the shop is absolutely abuzz and it may be standing room only, especially in the mornings. At night, the coffee shop also becomes a nice cozy little bar. The only thing I would change is that I wish they could bring back their outdoor seating! read more

This place is weird. No sign outside. Passed it on the first walk by and had to check the address. Inside is one sign after another scolding you on what you can't do if you want to stay including one practically blocking the door. This coffee shop is a vibe. It's busy buzzing at all times. A lot of the tables are communal so you can chat with others if that's what you're into. I love the tables outside when it's warm out to enjoy the sun on a peaceful East Village block. I'm not a coffee pro and when I was asking the barista about the options I was met with an attitude. It's kind of a punk rock hipster yet very European vibe in here. Disco balls, fun music, and music stuff with funky artwork on the walls. My first time coming here after brunch I was a little put off because I wanted to look at the menu and the woman behind the counter got mad at me and pointed to the end of the line. Uh okay. There's no signage anywhere else to view the menu and I'd just hold up the line if I read it over when I got up there to order but fine. The coffee is super intense as a warning. Like nuclear levels intense but in the good way. I ordered a macchiato the first time. Not really knowing what a macchiato is intently but I thought it was bigger than an espresso. Literally was an espresso with a dash of foam. I've seen them cup sized instead of shot sized before though so was kind of hoping for that. Second time I came back to give them another shot I got something more my speed with an iced latte. It was delicious. Intense but still great. They also serve Spanish beer with olives dipped in them. It's quirky and eclectic. I like it but if I was trying to get work done I'd probably be way too distracted. It feels like a more social coffee/bar type of place. But Abraco anyway means a "hug" in Portugese. All this time I thought they were Spanish. That's pretty cool. read more

My husband was a loyal patron of Abraco for years, which makes this even more disappointing. The service was outright awful--cold, unwelcoming, and shockingly rude. The staff displayed a complete lack of basic hospitality and then had the audacity to ask him to leave. Abraco has permanently lost our business. Meeting with a my wifey here for coffee in nyc was a vibe. . While waiting in line, olive oil bread caught my eye. It was different and good. It wasn't like fully savory, but had a light sweet. It pairs really well with coffee. . I had the coffee cocktail which has no alcohol. It had like sparkling water in it. It had bubbles and good coffee. Loved the whipped cream on top too. I love the cozy vibes inside and was great to chill and catch up a bit before catching my flight to Paris. . Overall this place is awesome, I will be back. Pretty decent affordable coffee with nice variety of options (except alternative milk), ample seating with upbeat music choices and friendly staff. their frappuccino is dairy free but a little strong for my taste. if you don't drink it in an swift amount of time the coffee separates rather easily so you get all your espresso at at bottom. i enjoyed their little icey made sweet. it was the perfect amount of coffee and milk without overstaying it's welcome and the aroma of the drink was just *chefs kiss* my partner ordered their sparkling water, whipped cream, coffee tonic and it was super refreshing. mixing the cream throughout the drink added a hug of sweetness and root beer float kind of throwback that i adored! because this place is laptop free, it's easy to get a seat--whether catching up with a friend, doing some reading, etc. it's rather formidable. although, i wouldn't say this place is quiet by any means, there's a bean grinder going off every 15 minutes that's kind of loud. but overall a wonderful place for body doubling. there is outside seating as well that would be wonderous if the weather is permitting. the only gripe is i wish that they carried alternative milks. luckily i carry lactaid on me but in this day and age it's surprising that they haven't gotten with the times. i do appreciate the low cost, however. it's not a deal breaker by any means! read more

I came across this cute coffee shop while walking around in the neighborhood. They had not only great music but the staff was friendly. I had ordered a decafe Iced Latte with 2% milk. They did not have decafe or 2% milk so I opted for a regular iced latte with regular milk. They have a cute outdoor sitting area as well. Iced Latte was tasty. I recommend this spot. read more

On my visit, the shop was bustling with a line out the door. As busy as they were, we were still able to claim a table inside after we ordered our coffee. This place also serves alcohol, so we'll have to try their cocktails another time. I got a macchiato and regular drip, while my girlfriend ordered the sparkling espresso cream. Macchiato was served in a demitasse and it was well made. Wasn't too hot and the espresso really shined. The drip was a darker profile than what I normally drink, but a good drip if you're in need of one. Anyone familiar with the SF coffee scene knows about Andytown and their snowy plover. The sparkling espresso cream is the same concept. Abraco's sparkling espresso cream was good, but the cream was on the heavier side. Almost weighed down the drink a bit. An unfortunate review. I deliberated on writing this, partly due to my long history of patronizing Abraco and to the general pleasantries I've experienced prior to yesterday. It's a very nice cafe. Maybe a bit posh. That in itself might hold the clue to a new ruling I was unaware of. Before seating, or sitting at a table they would prefer you now to order first. Was there a past issue? Maybe they wanted to have better control and flow of the floor. Whatever the reasoning was, I can dig it. I'm quite reasonable. If I would have seen this notice upon entering I would have completed my transactions first. What I didn't dig, however, was the young female that beelined for me as soon as I sat down and told me I had to order first before sitting. Her approach and candor threw me off to such a degree that I was immediately uncomfortable. Granted, I look young for my age, and as I was coming from work with my back pack, boots and hat on, or if it was my brown face that enabled her to exhibit an unrestrained version of zero self awareness in that moment, in addressing a customer in this regard we will never know. Well, I am not young. I'm 50 yrs old and the obvious lack of of finesse was apparent. The most ironic thing about this was my friend whom I was meeting was coming in behind me to order the drinks so I could grab the table? How absurd. Now I'm beginning to stew because I'm sitting here, a casualty from an apparent unprovoked rush to judgment. I am extremely uncomfortable now. We had an exchange of words. I told her my friend was on line ordering so she was wrong and I didn't appreciate her aproach. Her answer to my friend being online was that "my friend wasn't me". At that point her obviously entitled apoplectic attitude towards me took over and she canceled my order. I was asked to leave. The manager, who was gracious enough to bring me my drink outside was obviously unaware of the subtleties inside and took a neutral stance trying to just cool the temperature down and get on with it. I understand. In short, I hope this review can serve as a future reminder that even as locations and demographics change the age old adage, the customer is always right, as unfashionable as it is, is still an ideal worth striving for in any type of "service" capacity. One shouldn't be made felt to be a burden, but upon entering one should be made to feel welcomed and celebrated. read more

A friend has raved about the olive oil cake for nearly a year. So on my Thanksgiving trip to NYC, I was finally going to try it and I was not disappointed. He was right. He was definitely right that the bread had a crispy crust and the inside was not too heavy or too light. I came on a Saturday morning when the indoor and outdoor seating was occupied. Luckily, there was one table available on the side to enjoy my olive oil cake along with a piccolo latte in a tall glass. So I'm back here at home, miles away from Abraco and the olive oil cake. One day I'll go back, but for now I'm making something like it on my own. It's simple to bake, but whatever ingredients they use or however they bake it is just right. My friend and I have had text threads on this very topic. (It's not too sweet! How do they get the crust like that?) I'm sure the other baked goods there are good and I don't usually get the stuff at cafes, but this cake was a standout. read more

The last time that I was at Abraco was when they were about a third of their current location. I love that their new location is so much more spacious and is great for a catch up with a friend or for pure deliciousness and satisfying your coffee addiction and sweet tooth. Their cakes are more like breads but have very moist centers with crispy exteriors and are that perfect not too sweet. Their cinnamon roll has plenty of cream cheese frosting. I'm always on the lookout for the best coffee or cafe in whichever city I'm visiting. Abraco was my latest find in my most recent trip to NYC. No frills coffee shop with the friendliest employees. I came here two days in a row (and if you know me, I don't like going to places twice) for their pour over. It was FANTASTIC. Not bitter or sour at all, but absolutely perfect. The second day I tried the olive oil cake, which I recommend passing. Five stars alone for the coffee. However, every time I've been the staff have just been kind of mean. I understand it gets to be a busy place on the weekend, but three out of three times I've been here, the barista (a different person each time) made some kind of snappy comment. Most recently, a friend and I got snapped at for not picking up our drinks off the counter immediately. Sorry - it's real loud in there! Wow, I am so glad I stumbled across this gem in the east village!!!!! I got a cappuccino and that's by far one of the BEST cappuccinos I've ever had in my entire life. Idk where they get their beans from but wow, so delicious and tasty. The olive oil cake was also delicious. Not too sweet, not too oily. It went perfect with my capp. Service was excellent.
