The faculty and leadership have evolved over the time I've been here, but the current administration are proactive and genuinely engaged. They continually look for ways to improve. Any form of bullying is addressed expeditiously. My kids love all their teachers they had so far. Academically, the school offers much more than the basics--STEM classes, a wide variety of sports, dance, and even Spanish and music electives. The principal is a strong believer in integrating technology into education with smart boards and iPads, so students are learning skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom. Above all, the sense of community here is amazing. Families know each other and watch out for each other. We are glad we found a school that nurtures our kids spiritually, academically, and socially. Highly recommend!

We have been part of the Long Beach Stearns Kumon Family for about 4 years now and have been very…read morehappy with the growth and development of our children, who are currently 7 years old and 9 years old. My oldest son who is currently in 3rd grade began his Kumon journey when he was in Kindergarten. We initially started him with Reading only in order to develop his Reading and Vocabulary, but, after a year, we transitioned him into both Math and Reading. During his time in Kumon, I can honestly say Kumon has helped him develop a strong vocabulary base and has allowed him to become a proficient reader and writer. One aspect of Kumon that I believe is most beneficial for the student is the development of the daily routine and discipline of completing the work packets. These type of study habits to finish these Kumon packets on time gradually becomes ingrained into their daily routine which helps to develop discipline and a strong work ethic, which eventually can carry on to other aspects of academic life. Ms. Jila and her staff truly care about the academic success and learning of each child. Without reservation, I would recommend Kumon Long Beach Stearns for your child.

Please BEWARE before bringing your child here, especially if you have a child with special needs…read more My son has autism, and my experience with JILA, who runs this franchise, left me extremely uncomfortable with the environment. I found her demeanor toward her staff and the children to be rude and harsh, and they appeared intimidated by her. As a parent of an autistic child, it's especially important to me that he learns in an environment where he feels safe, supported, and comfortable. Not fearful. During my son's assessment, I told Jila I had a work Zoom call (which I have everyday at the same time) and would speak with her afterward. She became visibly agitated and questioned why I would schedule a meeting during the assessment when It had never been made clear that I needed to be present for the entire hour. She then asked if I was good at math and, after I said yes, she actually asked me what 3 × 9 was. I am college educated and used to be a tutor myself when I was in college but I still refused to answer such an asinine offensive question. I told her that I was not there to take an assessment or to be quizzed and didn't answer her. I found that incredibly condescending and insulting. Her treatment of me was so uncomfortable that I genuinely questioned whether race played a role. When I said I wanted to think more about the program before committing, she again seemed irritated, which made the interaction feel more focused on securing my enrollment (money) than whether the program was actually a good fit for my child. I would strongly encourage parents to explore private tutors, including qualified college students and brokering a good deal. For the amount of money you may spend here, you may as well find a more patient, supportive, and individualized experience for your child.

My daughter is in 7th grade and very happy here. I have been so impressed with IVA since my…read moredaughter started last year. The communication from the school and the inclusiveness has made it a great experience for us. Students are respected, their voices are heard and they are made to feel like their opinions matter. The virtues are there to make them feel empowered as students. The weekly advisory meeting they have once a week for all students is great because it helps them understand and know the virtues and how to apply them to their work. Sixth grade is a learning curve and IVA gets that. One thing to know about the school is that since kids are coming from all different schools and school settings it's easier to make friends. There are no clicks in place. This year they also made it phone free. No phones at school. However, they can use them after school. I have read past reviews that said the school is not diverse and not for people of color. This from our experience is not true at all. Maybe in past years this was the case but it is no longer this way. IVA is very racially and socioeconomically diverse. It is a true representation of Long Beach in that regard. If you are a parent who wants to volunteer and see what is going on at the school there are plenty of opportunities, field trip opportunities, dances every year, a chili cook off, and family breakfast/lunches hosted by the school. There is a weekly newsletter, outlining all events coming up. How you can get involved, sports info, field trips etc... They make it very difficult for you to miss something. My daughter loved the dances last year. They are more like a fun party. There is no pressure to have a date or anything like that. They make them very low pressure like come in your PJ's etc... It's just an opportunity to hang out with friends outside of school. The staff and teachers will all know your child's name. I think this matters to my daughter. We live in Belmont Heights and had an opportunity to send her to Rogers as well. It's not quite our home school but it is a lot closer to us than IVA and I wanted her to go there. She would have had friends closer and I wanted that for her. However, after my daughter toured IVA in 5th grade, she made her mind up that she wanted to experience the smaller school and smaller class setting. She loved seeing students laughing in class with the teachers and sitting at little tables. The teachers were young and they didn't look miserable. The principal, Mrs. Bryant who led our tour was very dynamic and genuine. My daughter noticed these things and pushed for us to let her try IVA out. Her experience so far has not disappointed her. She has liked or loved almost all of her teachers. This is so important and this is coming from a student who struggles in school. She has an IEP for a reading disability. School is not easy for her. This is another reason I was hesitant on IVA. I wanted to her to have more options concerning her IEP and a bigger school can provide this. So far, her accommodations at IVA are working for her. She has also made friends with a great group of girls who are from all over Long Beach. In truth this is something I was also dreading but it's ok! She is happy! The parents of her friends are the type of parents who want the best for their kids. They will drive. This is how most of the parents are at this school as well. When volunteer sign ups come out for some event, the list gets filled up fast! Most of the parents at the school care. So far my daughter has joined Track and Cross Country. She also wants to play soccer this year. They do have team sports at IVA but it is on a smaller scale than a larger school. It's great for kids that want to try sports but might be intimidated at a bigger school with a lot of talented athletes. Not to say that there aren't some talented athletes here but it's not the focus of the school. If you're wondering about academics. I have heard wonderful things from parents who have had older siblings that graduated from IVA. One parent in particular shared with me that when her son started at his private High School (Bosco) after IVA, he was placed in honors classes which surprised her because her son was a B/C student at IVA. She felt the education he received at IVA was top notch, taught him how to be a student and actually engage in what he learned. Lastly, I just want to give a shout out to Mrs. Gordon, the dean of students and Mrs. Bryant the principal. These women care about your student. The love and dedication they put into their job is truly impressive.

Burcham Elementary is truly one of the hidden gems of LBUSD. Since the arrival of Mr. Evans, the…read morenew principal, the school has seen thoughtful, meaningful improvements that show how much he genuinely cares. As a parent himself of two young children, he understands what families value and it shows in the way he leads. One of the biggest advantages of Burcham is that it offers full‑day TK and Kindergarten, something many districts -- even high‑income areas like Irvine -- still don't provide. LBUSD began guaranteeing full‑day TK/K in 2022 based on your home address, and we feel very fortunate that Burcham is one of the schools offering it. Since Mr. Evans arrived, we've noticed so many positive changes. The Kinder playground now has more toys, planters, and engaging play materials. In the mornings, the school plays calm, kid‑friendly music before the bell, and even the bell itself is a soft chime instead of the loud, traditional school bell. These small touches create a warm, welcoming environment for students. Burcham also offers strong after‑school options, including WRAP and Coachie Hour (funded by the PTA). The CDC program opens at 6 AM and runs until 6 PM, though spots are limited -- you're lucky if you get in. Under Mr. Evans' leadership, the school has expanded enrichment opportunities such as Chess Club and after‑school sports like pickleball and tennis. For advanced learners, Burcham offers GATE (Gifted and Talented Education). The PTA is very active, hosting events throughout the year and meeting monthly. Mr. Evans also holds Donuts with the Principal once a month, giving parents a chance to connect and share feedback. With his strong background in IT, he has been instrumental in upgrading the school's technology and equipment. He also offers PTA meetings both in person and online, which is a huge convenience for working families. Academically, the school's scores have been rising, and more families with young children are moving into the neighborhood because of Burcham's growing reputation. We truly love Burcham Elementary. The teachers are caring and dedicated, and Mr. Evans continues to bring vision, kindness, and compassion to the school. He is a forward‑thinking leader who has made a noticeable difference in a short time. Burcham is absolutely a standout school in Long Beach.
