If you look on the map it looks like you are in the middle of a pasture, and that's sort of how it feels. It's the most comfortable place I've ever stayed. And the owners, Barbara and Edward Clare are almost like family to all of their guests. When you stop in the main house they have a fresh baked loaf of bread for you--there's butter and blackberry jelly in your fridge at one of the two cottages. Now if you are looking for 5-star accommodations with the finest spa amenities, this is not your place. If you are looking for a country cabin with a fire pit, comfy bed, rustic beauty of the mountains all around you--then you have hit pay-dirt. This is the only place I stay in the area. Based on when you books you will pay $80-$100 per night, less than most hotels in the area. We stayed the night before in Mena and regretted it. The cottage has a fully stocked kitchen with coffee, hot tea and enough spices, pots, pans and dishes for you to cook what ever you want. I make breakfast every time I'm there. I grab some eggs and ham at the local convenience store and I'm set. The bed is comfy and the bathrooms is super clean. They have DISH Network, so you can watch television or enjoy the selection of VHS tapes. But really you should go sit on the porch and see the stars or listen for the wildlife to come scurrying by.

We snagged a room here to get us the majority of the way from Dallas to Eagle Rock Loop (Arkansas) so we could knock it out without a 4.5h drive leading up to it. I am so glad we did! Upon arrival at around 8PM, we had to call so the inn keeper could let us in, then we got a tour, and were shown upstairs to our room: #4. The floors are creaky with charm, but there's a private bathroom in the room, window-unit AC, and a large and powerful space heater (we were toasty on a freezing night). So much personality and personal touches here. A modest, but complimentary, selection of snacks and drinks are available in various places, too! All in all, I'd definitely come back and stay a little longer!

Upon arrival we received a warm greeting from the gentleman at the front desk and he showed us to our ground floor room. The decor in the hallway set the tone (rather rundown but featuring displays about the area and history of the hotel), one of the rooms we passed was missing a door and had a bed sheet covering the door way, perhaps it was being rehabbed? Our room was clean, sheets were nice and the beds were comfy but the room didn't feel finished (bare concrete floor, exposed pipes and electric lines from the room above running along the ceiling). The bathroom was clean but tiny and a bit rundown. After seeing the room for the first time, I'm certain that had I been with my wife, she would have insisted we get back in the car and keep driving. The hotel restaurant is closed for business (not sure if that is temporary or permanent) but that was definitely the only attractive room in the building. The whole marketing emphasis of this place is that it's "historic" but it's only from the 1940's, my home is much older and I've never thought of it as historic. Frankly, it felt like the whole "historic" thing was just an excuse for being so shabby. All in all I'd say that whoever is in charge of cleaning is doing a wonderful job but the whole place is rundown and desperately in need of restoration. You will be hard pressed to find somewhere decent to eat in town. We received a couple of recommendations for "El Rancho Mexican Grill" and it was pretty awful.

Beautiful mansion that has been put together so tastefully and the room we rented was clean and well appointed. As a fan of history and architecture you can't go wrong. Our room/ bathroom was very clean and well kept, with great bath towels and water pressure in the shower. The bed was comfy and my daughter enjoyed watching TV in bed. Coffee was available in the mansion, thank you, thank you, and we also visited the donut shop next door for a morning bit to eat. We were towing a small U Haul trailer and had no problem in the parking lot although this likely depends on where other cars are parked...we arrived with only 2 other cars in the lot and others arriving after us seemed to give us an easy way out in the morning. We would definitely return and we will definitely recommend to friends and family visiting Fort Smith or those just passing through like we were, it was not far off Interstate 40.
