I had a very pleasant experience at this inn. I got caught up in a bad storm while camping and needed a place to stay for the night. Darren answered my call late at night and was able to get me a room. This place has incredible history. It's very charming. But, Darren was a big part of what made me enjoy my stay. I was alone, scared, and tired after being caught in that storm. Darren made me feel at home in this inn. He even made me some incredible blueberry muffins in the morning to send me off. We just stayed for our first time at the Sassafras Inn in Mena, Arkansas. What a great time and such a beautiful, 125 year old home. We stayed in the Magnolia Suite upstairs and our friends who came with us had the Veranda Suite downstairs and they were both so very comfortable. We felt so very much at home, everything was very clean and overall it was just a great getaway. The Host, Darren took such great care of us, and his blueberry muffins were amazing. Historical B&B with plenty of Charm! We were lucky enough to book our stay at this B&B as the resort we were initially going to book was completely sold out. This historical B&B is nested in the small town of Mena, Arkansas. As we drove upon the property, I already knew that we were going to have a comfortable stay as the driveway itself is elegant. The exterior of the home brings back all the character and charm of the 1900's. The innkeepers were one the friendliest hosts I have met. Both Darren and Jill went above and beyond to ensure that we had the most pleasant stay. A plus on this, is that Jill herself is a baker and had different types of cookies and muffins ready for us daily. Highlights were the blueberry muffins (berries locally picked) and the Louisianna Tea cookies (original family recipe). They even had plenty of drinks stocked for us throughout the stay. Darren himself is a concierge and was so knowledgeable of the home's history and the surrounding areas. The house itself was comfortable and one of a kind. We were given the top floor of the home which felt like a suite. The house has been kept to its original state. Everything from the windows to the doors, and ceilings are authentic. As we walked into the first room upstairs, we could not help but notice the coziness of the decor. The room itself has two twin beds and is connected to the primary bedroom and bathroom. The space was huge and felt welcoming. The beds themselves were so comfortable that we ended up sleeping in daily getting caught up on some much-needed zzz's. I was a little worried about thin walls, but you could not even hear a pin drop! On our last day, we sat out in their back porch sitting area to view the beautiful sassafras trees. These trees are the oldest trees in the area and were absolutely beautiful. As the sun went down, we started to see the mesmerizing fireflies making the our experience majical!. This brought back so many memories since do not have these back in Vegas. This was just a priceless moment for us! This by far was one of our best stays while out traveling. The Sassafras Inn was the perfect getaway for me and my parents. We stayed for 3-nights and the hosts, Darren and Jill were so hospitable. Hospitality From the moment we arrived, Darren and Jill extended a heartfelt welcome, treating us to the most exquisite homemade blueberry muffins I've ever tasted. Their thoughtful generosity continued throughout our visit, as they provided us with more delicious baked treats and beverages. Despite our 3-day stay in the small town of Mena, Darren has plenty of recommendations to keep us busy. He was very knowledgeable about the area as well as the historical home. If you're looking for a place that will fully embrace you with open arms, Sassafras Inn is the place to go. Cleanliness The house itself was very lovely and well-maintained. We booked the upstairs Magnolia Suite which had 2 bedrooms and shared an in-suite bath. The rooms had gorgeous views of the front and back of the home. Darren and Jill do have pets however all of the rooms were so clean that we would never know unless we were told. Location Outside, the inn was like something out of a postcard, a real change from your usual cookie-cutter hotels. It's stationed down the street from Mena's town center where you can explore some small town shops, restaurants, and historical landmarks. However, be warned that everything does close at 8/9 pm. And everything on Sundays is pretty much closed. Overall our stay was very pleasant. We left feeling refreshed and motivated to stay at more inns than hotels. If you find your self in this little slice of Arkansa this is the place to stay! We were very lucky they had a last minute opening for us the day we were needing to stay. The owner reached out quickly after we booked to provide us information about our stay, we even had a chance to meet him when we arrived! He was very nice and friendly and you could tell me cared about the place and the enjoyment of our stay. We had our 3 year old with us and she loved the snacks and drinks. Downstairs there is a little fridge with various drinks and a variety of snacks and fruit. The grounds are beautiful and wonderfully decorated. We stayed in the magnolia suite which is great if you have children. The first room has two twin beds and a coffee bar with snacks if you want to make a nice fresh cup of coffee. The main room is HUGE. A large and comfy kind bed. A tv with all kinds of steaming services and a large bathroom with a shower that has nice hot water (which did have a bathtub, I know is a nice feature when you have kids!) the bedroom also has a couch and a table so plenty of areas for sitting and just relaxing. You can control the temperature of the room which is a very nice feature. All In all it was the next best thing to being home and we would 100% stay again! read more

This was the nicest B&B! Quiet, lovely, clean and private!! Beds are luxurious, bathroom was well appointed, communal spaces were darling! The prices are sooooo reasonable for the amount of space. Breakfast is simple and easy. We much prefer it to more expensive and fattening options. We love Mena, with all its charm and surrounding beauty. We antique as we go and Mena offers great treasure hunting options! After our day of shopping, we enjoyed a wonderful cocktail hour on the veranda, sitting under the gorgeous sassafras trees. So lovely and peaceful. We wouldn't change a thing and we will Definately return!!! read more

Great 1900's home very comfortable, the O'Bannon's are great hosts would highly recommend

I probably would have given this place five stars, had I not stayed at Morning View retreat in Murfreesboro Arkansas. This place was very nice and clean. It had a nice soft bed and it was very quiet because we were the only ones there. This was kind of like a bed and breakfast. However, the only breakfast items that were available included oatmeal, breakfast bars, and fruit. This place did offer Coffee and Tea and bottled water. If you wanted to purchase and cook your breakfast there, you had that option as they had a full kitchen. They had a sitting area which you could explore through any one of the bedrooms. We had the verandaroom, that had an option of adding an additional room just in case you brought kids or another couple. Janae, is actually working on a fourth room for the bed and breakfast. She was very pleasant, and all that a lot of recommendations to our third destination of the city of Hot Springs. She offered recommendations for restaurants because she had previously lived there. She was very helpful as we got a chance to see her as we were checking out. We definitely did try a lot of the places that she recommended. Before I forget, this place also had a laundry room so we were able to wash all of our clothes that had gotten dirty in the previous City while digging for diamonds, in addition to all the hiking that we did while we were in Mena. read more

If you find yourself passing through Mena, Arkansas and need to stop for the night, do yourself a favor and skip the appallingly overpriced or abysmal quality hotels in town and give Zac a call. This place is way better-- and cheaper too! Nice rooms, but shared bathroom downstairs. Not sure if that's par for the course with B&B's, I have only stayed in a handful and all had bathrooms en suite. But as I am the only one staying here tonight, this isn't even as issue for me. Thank goodness for Alexa over at Paisano's (see review) recommending this place or else I would have kept on driving for hours to McAlester, Oklahoma to try to find a decent place to stay! PS- if you are going to or coming from Oklahoma, you MUST take route 88 at either sunrise or sunset. Spectacular! read more

We arrived at The Sassafras Inn in the small town of Mena, Arkansas (5,737) on Wednesday of Holy Week for a one night stay. We were impressed by the cleanliness of the home and the size of our room...and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked. As it turned out we were the only guests that night with the other four bedrooms empty! We couldn't be more pleased with our stay. We've stayed in many BnB's over the years and this one is in the top tier. If we ever stop in Mena in the future, we definitely would choose The Sassafras Inn again. read more
