Great little downtown area and Kettell is just on the edge of it on the way out of town. It has the three things I look for in a place - outdoor seating/dog friendly, food available, and of course a good selection of beers. Me and the Mrs. each got a flight, but neither of us could find one of the eight that made us want to invest in a full pint. Not that the beer is bad, we just didn't find one that made our taste buds sing. I usually go for the flights which include small pours and a souvenir tasting glass. Last time I was here a few months ago, I think my boyfriend and I ordered 3 flights so that we could taste and share all 12 red, white, and blend wines. Good choice, and relatively inexpensive. The food here is also good. I don't think they have a standard menu, but I've tried both the pepperoni pizza and a BBQ sandwich meal from here. When ordering food initially, it was just meant to "hold us over" until we got to the next place. But hot damn, the food is seriously DELICIOUS. Trust me and order from here! Lastly, this location is in an old schoolhouse. There's a lot of history here and the folks are willing to share that with you. Just talk to them! I'll have to admit that the winery itself is not as nice on the eyes as some others nearby in terms of being fancy or chic or whatever... instead, the vibe is homey, quaint, and welcoming. After leaving Mast General Store, we tried to map the Jerky Outpost but our reception was so bad, the maps on our phone did not work. Please keep this in mind when visiting the area, it is very remote. We made the wrong initial turn leaving Mast and heading towards Boone, and had to stop to ask directions. We found our way and came upon the Jerky Outpost. We drove up the driveway and parked in the small parking lot, with fewer than 10 spaces. We proceeded to the building which had been designed to look like three different old buildings. Once inside, the structure appears to be one building. There is jerky all over the place, along walls, on tables and also includes a large variety of different BBQ and hot sauces, nuts, snack foods and swag. We walked around a bit, selected a few items and paid at the counter. The prices seemed reasonable and the man at the counter was friendly and helpful. This was a pretty cool experience in a place you never would have expected. This is also a great place to pick up some gift items you might not see again.
