I was disappointed in the facility it looked like a dive bar from the late 80's the plus was it was only 329.00 so i feel like i didn't lose too much money. Honestly learned more about bartending from watching You tube videos, then from Matt the instructor who droned on while i found myself zoning out. I would save your money and time and just watch videos on line for free, most bars don't even ask if you are certified and are willing to train you. read more

I decided to take the course because I wanted to learn the methods and skills to bartend. A couple of things. If you don't like memorizing recipes, then maybe it's not the class for you, because like the title states, it's a school. Our instructor Hogan is very charismatic and really knows his material. He gives us a lecture, allows us to ask questions, and also gives us plenty of time to practice behind the bar as well. The test at the end can be difficult, but by the end of the course, I felt comfortable enough to try it, and successfully passed as well. Literally the most unnecessary thing to do before applying for bartending jobs. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND JUST LIE ON YOUR RESUME. Don't get me wrong, you do learn some techniques and terminology, but other than that- pointless. Bartending is a hands on skill that you learn & get better at over time. I took a two week course here with Jeff and it fully prepared me for my job as a Bartender. He's a great teacher that makes it fun.

I graduated from this school a couple weeks ago and I couldn't be happier with the experience. There were some short comings but it's mostly due to maintenance and staffing. The classes run M-Th for 2 weeks. You have an option for morning class or night. The alcohol bottles are water and food coloring which are great so you can see what the actual drink looks like. The book covers everything you need to know about the fundamentals, so don't worry if the class is short. Just read up on the material. My instructor was Janice. She was very thorough and to the point. You would see the world you're about to enter through her explanation of things. Jan would teach you to WORK SMART, NOT HARD. The issue I had with maintenance: the ice machine wasn't working the whole time, so they had to get ice delivered. It would set us back by 30 minutes sometimes. The TV was too small and speakers need to be updated since you can't hear/see if you're all the way at the back. If I couldn't make the morning class, it would be okay for me to catch the lesson at night since it's the same instructor. Which brings me to my next point. She's working all day, all week. Isn't there someone else to teach during the nighttime? Poor woman. She's doing a really great job and deserves a break. Anyways, I highly recommend this school. It's a good program with good time slots and great location. Just make sure to bring snacks and take breaks or you won't absorb the whole lesson. read more

I waited to post about my experience so I can give an honest review of how the lessons and techniques learned can be applied to an actual job... First, Janice did an absolutely amazing job in preparing us mentally for the atmosphere we are going into. The first day when we greeted each other she asked, "How are you?" My reply was a dull and lifeless "not too bad." Right away she was on the prowl to teach. Expressing her views of how the interaction must be uplifting and energetic. Which, I can say, is 100% true. I've kept that first time meeting Janice in mind and have noticed how much the customers latch on to the energy. Next, Janice covered quite a bit about customer interaction and working as a team with either bar backs, servers, and other bartenders. I have been working with a bartender that have little to no experience, and the flow of the bar is greatly affected. The communication and key points she gave really helps when working with the experienced. Something as simple as "behind you" can avoid a quick turn and bump which would equal a spilled drink and starting all over. After this, I considering the amount of time drilling the drink recipes, the acronyms learned to remember them, and the presentation of the drinks being made. This time was of great benefit to make the customer see you know what you're doing. When the common drinks are ordered, you'll easily be able to mix it quickly because of the time spent studying and practicing. I worked with someone that had no clue how to make a drink, a common Sex on the Beach, and they quickly tossed me the customer to avoid the problem of telling them they didn't know how to make it. This worked out well because the customer was happy the drink was made quickly and tasted great which she in returned gave a generous tip and returned for 2 more. Then after graduating, I began looking for employment and utilizing the work assistance or job placement with Mallory. Before I signed up, I was told it's assistance only, not a guaranteed job. Which is exactly what Mallory did. I got the requested weekly updates and the assistance in adjusting my resume to fit the bar format. The communication was quick and the leads were accurate. As suggested, I also looked on my own and ended up applying to multiple businesses and was offered a position at 4 different businesses. I am currently working full time at my day job and have 2 bartending jobs. I put in a lot of effort to learn everything I can and it paid off. Finally, when working with John he was very accurate in his promises and guarantees. He was straightforward about the job assistance. He kept his word on what our arrangement was. There were no surprise costs added on. All of this made me feel comfortable in giving my recommendations to friends and coworkers to attend this very educational program. My girlfriend and I made a spontaneous decision to attend bartending school one weekend and not only was it a fun, but it turned out to be a great investment as we ended up getting jobs within 3 weeks of starting the class. Matt is hands on the best teacher you can ask for when it comes to bartending. We ended up finishing the course on the 4th day of coming in! Matt turned two adults who knew little to nothing about bartending prior to the start of the course, to professional bartenders in a matter of days, mastering over 30 drinks in that time. I already had a bartending job before but had to teach myself everything. I quit a while back and I decided it wouldn't hurt to add some more knowledge before applying for another job. I had Kim, she's amazing and super friendly. Very thorough! I learned a lot while being in this class! They also give you lots of nice tips, tricks, and mnemonic devices to help you memorize drinks. You basically pretend to make drinks with your own bar. All of the liquor and liquids you would need have food coloring in them to make them look real. Definitely helps because you do them over and over again. She can answer all your questions (she's been bartending for about 20 years I believe). It was a super fun class- I looked forward to attending and you get along with all your classmates. Price: winter is slower season so I only paid $295. I believe it can go upwards to 600ish? Benefits: free refresher courses for life I think. Businesses call up ABC to look for bartenders so you have lifetime job placement aid. I came to the Los Alamitos location, and Janice was my instructor. I really liked how she taught the class. Having bartended before, I knew that this was my chance to reinforce good habits, and learn new ones that would serve me well in the industry. Janice had a lot on her hands, because contrary to what John (the man who enrolled me) said, I was not with new students, I was thrown in with a class already in progress (I'm still going back to learn things, more on why in a minute). Unfortunately, it took me longer to complete my training, because the ice machine was broken. Doesn't seem like a big deal right? Kind of is. Without ice, I can't make drinks, and with 8 people in two classes operating in one session, I had to use old ice that had already been used. NOT the habit I want to form. Additionally, Janice was teaching two different classes, so I was completely confused by the different information, making it harder to internalize what I was SUPPOSED to be learning in any given class. EXTREMELY frustrating. ON THE PLUS SIDE, I did get a steep discount, which was amazing, however, I would have happily paid more for a class that had all functioning equipment (oh, half the glasses were not the correct sizes and kinds that we were supposed to be learning), and was all on the same page. I feel I could have walked away with more from this experience. I don't regret spending the money, but I would recommend you pay more money for better quality. UPDATE: John called me this afternoon to address my concerns. He seemed genuinely concerned about my experience, and I appreciate that kind of customer service. He says the ice machine will be fixed, and there will be new glasses on Thursday evening when I go in to get some more practice, so I'm really hoping to be able to fix a few of the issues I was having with my habits during class. It's very important to Work Smart but now hard, you want to save your energy to make more money. If you get 3 same order, think about how to save time to finish those order at one time but not separate I. Three times. To be a good bartending is more about personality but not only good experience. People want to talk but not need a Machine. That's what she teaches us! I had the best experience with this school and the instructor Rayven. Her teaching methods were extremely precise and effective. Rayven has a great personality and is really helpful. The class was educational and fun at the same time. Rayven plays music and dims the lights and creates a bar environment while you're learning so it really strengthens your skills and gets you ready for the real thing.
