We were immediately seated at our table and a waiter took our drink orders while we looked over the menu. Beer for me, Alsatian white wine for my friends. Dinner all around. Fish and chips was a good portion of fish with a massive pile of crispy chips. A tarte with cheese and bacon. (And if you don't know, a French tarte is basically a flatbread pizza.) Bacon and cheese spätzle (basically, mac and cheese with bacon). We were all about the carbs tonight and it was all delicious. Lots of food, all easily shareable and the service was excellent. I don't know how "traditional" Alsatian this is, but it was yummy. We were here for close to two hours and at no time did we feel rushed. Online menus made it easy to order in English and everything turned out quite well. [Review 16428 overall - 63 in France - 1936 of 2021.]

Nice stop for lunch [Strasbourg, France]…read more We stopped by the restaurant for lunch. They had both indoor and outdoor dining available. The rustic wooden tables gave the place a unique look. Menus were accessible by QR code. Prices were decent, of course, a little higher due to the euro|dollar exchange rate. We ordered a couple of burgers. Smash Burger for my brother and Burger Fermier (Bacon Burger) for me. Both came with fries. The burger was a bit messy to eat, bun did not hold well but it was still good and tasty. Bacon was not like our bacon in the U.S. Service was good. Our waiter checked on us every so often but could not find him when it came time to pay. Atmosphere had a medieval feel. A little dark inside. Restrooms had dungeon type doors and it was dark. I guess that's how it was supposed to be designed. Overall good experience. Caupona means "tavern" in Latin. The bar was cleverly designed to match the theme of the restaurant. Review #4071

Not only is the restaurant beautiful, in an old wine cellar, but we had an amazing meal as well. My wife had the chicken and I had the pork cheeks. She said it was her favorite meal while in France. What a wonderful place to drink a local beer and aperitif!…read more Strasbourg is a delightful city full of charming settings, and La Corde a Linge is certainly one of them. Ample outdoor seating, on the river, provides a window into the hustle and bustle and sightings of people ambling, crossing bridges, and boating, while you lazily enjoy the weather and company. I almost feel sorry for the servers who are hustling, themselves, to keep up with the ever changing thirsty customers. But I figure they are raking in the tips; so it is a fair exchange. I am so glad we ended up in this tiny restaurant in Le Petit France for lunch! Since we didn't have breakfast, we opted to go big on lunch and this place fit that bill. The place is quaint and the proprietor was gracious and helpful with us Americans. The portions were generous and decadent. Don't come here looking for health food. Come here looking for hearty, authentic Alsatian dishes. You won't regret it. Onion soup - France meets Germany in this bowl. The onions in the soup was so tender and rather than being topped with a crouton and cheese, it was served on the side and we dipped it in the broth. So good. Foie gras - If you have any qualms about this delicacy, now is the time to get over them because it was the best foie I've ever had. The area is known for it, so there was no way I wasn't going to have some. Just do it. Don't not do it. Ham hock - No knife required. I was given a nice steak knife for it, touched the thing, and it fell apart. I put the knife down and just had at it with my fork. It was so ridiculously tender and rich. Came with potatoes (take some of the skin/fat from that meat and combine it with the potatoes as you dredge up the wine reduction with them) and a side salad (health food!). Order this. Just don't tell your cardiologist. Spaetzle gratin - And finally a dish of fat and carbs to round out or light lunch. It's like if Germany wanted mac n cheese, except way better. Also came with that healthy side salad.
