That's where they get the second star. Now the bad: The facility consistently failed to perform laundry tasks, despite advertising a weekly schedule. There were cockroaches in our apartment. The facility failed to restock critical medications for our tenant. They nickel and dime you for every single item. And finally, our family caught an aide employed by Brightview (Salem, I believe) yelling at an aide our family privately employed. Unacceptable and unprofessional behavior. While they present as a clean and welcoming facility, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

My husband was a resident at August Healthcare at Leeward for 10 weeks following a stroke…read more Pros: The best thing about this place by far is the dedicated professionals who provide physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. They really helped with the recovery and were very encouraging. Also, the room my husband had was a very nice private room that we were happy with. Cons: The CNAs provided very inconsistent care. Some were nice and helpful; others seemed like they hated their job and really didn't want to be there. I realize it's a difficult job, but the residents really appreciate it when someone shows kindness, and that didn't always happen. They only give the residents one shower per week, and sometimes they didn't even want to do that. I had to complain when it had been 8 days since his last shower and the CNAs all said they were too busy. He did eventually get that shower -- they woke him at 6 AM for the shower, which felt like payback for me complaining. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect at least one shower per week. I would prefer 2 or 3 per week. The meal service was not great. They did not always deliver what was requested. My husband is diabetic so they gave him diet soda with breakfast, lunch, and dinner! No one needs soda with breakfast. The fruits and vegetables were almost always canned. It would have been nice to have some fresh produce every day. This place is expensive -- I think they could provide higher quality fruits and vegetables. So there are some good points and some not so good points about August Healthcare. With more training for the staff, especially the CNAs, they could get better reviews. Show a little kindness!

Their solution on fixing the bed was to slap black electrical tape on the cord. The bed is obviously very old and the bed frame is rusted. After she was there a few days we were finally informed that she was there. She was there for factures in her leg and hip after a fall at home. I sat there and watched her cry from the pain only to be told that her pain medication had to ordered and had not arrived yet. Then she had to use the bathroom they couldn't get here in a wheel chair. They told her they would be back with a larger bed pan. After I arrived and went to the nurses desk a CNA came in and said we know she is holding it but we can't get her to the bathroom. I said she can't keep holding it and they put a diaper on her. After putting a diaper on her and she urinated and had bowel movement it took 40 minutes for them to change her. Today the phones are not working. So I will have to drive there from Culpeper to check on my mother. So really this place deserves no stars in my book. Don't let your loved one stay here.

Some examples of my experiences with them in the 8 days that we used them: We called the nurse there and was advised to take my husband to ER on a Sunday night. She advised us to cancel out aide the next day because my husband might be admitted. It turned out that the ER visit was not necessary so we returned home around 4:30am. I called their 24-hour hotline and was told by Patrick that he would contact the scheduler at 7:30am to see if we can get our aide back. When I finally got up in the morning after an exhausting night, I called back and found that Patrick didn't contact the scheduler at all. He only did it after I called and told me that the earliest time that an aide could come was 2:30pm. My husband's diaper/sheet was saturated with urine in the morning and I am not strong enough to change him. I had to call another agency to get help. They sent someone over in 40-minutes and helped me clean up my husband. That was an extremely unpleasant and stressful experience. We talked to Brightstar and one of the aides, hoping to have her sign up for more shifts with us. They insisted that it can't be done, but the aide was puzzled because she clearly had the availability. One aide was sleeping on the job, another one had many issues and I told them that I'd rather take care of my husband myself if she was the only one available. I emailed a few people at Brightstar (including the scheduler) about changing the hours from 12-hour per day to two 4-hour shifts. A few days later, I got the new schedule, it still showed 12-hour per day. They claimed that it's hard to get the same aides for the fixed shifts because they all work for different agencies. We had a revolving door of caregivers the first week. The new agency found fixed aides for us in less than 2 days and promised that they'll be the same for the remainder of the time that we still use them (unless any of them are sick or have emergencies - which is reasonable). It CAN be done! My husband (who is in hospice) is very happy with the new aides and I am relieved that I no longer have the headaches dealing with the issues associated with Brightstar.
