We had a 1 hour time to get it done before take off. The office staff were closing at 14:00 with a whole week of hard work. I called them and they were nice enough to help me get the application rolling and everything set up before I arrive. It was the best service ever. The cancellation lady was nice and good at her job. (~11am 06/29/26). However, their overall customer service is so awful I had to leave and go with someone more expensive. I tried updating my insurance policy but never got a response back. I waited 2 weeks and sent 4 messages including to their corporate office which told me the Hawaii branch manager would contact me in 48 hours- a week ago. However, this is not an isolated incident. I never received my proof of insurance (and of course their app wasn't working, it's usually under "maintenance"). In August 2025, at this point I had already dealt with issues of them not being able to find my account because I had a membership for roadside assistance in a different state a long time ago. This was of course a someone's fault who "no longer works here". After, I had to find the solution by calling a branch in a different state, they disassociated my old account. Then the Hawaii branch was able to locate my account. Normally, a simple request of "Proof of Insurance", would not be an issue. But behold, in the Hawaii branch it is! I was told they would mail it to me- they didn't. I contacted their support via email as at this point I have no paper trail proving their negligence. Of course, the manager would be in contact with me in 48 hours... can you guess what didn't happen? So I message their general support again, no response. I message the sales guy, no response. At this point you start to ask, does this branch actually have employees, or are they that awful at regular customer support and lack competent management? Eventually, after several calling attempts (clearly they don't want to leave a paper trail of their lack of work.). They finally send me my proof of insurance. Since then, I tried to avoid contacting them as it wasn't worth the headache of trying to get people to do their job. However, I unfortunately needed to update my auto insurance to reflect changes of my car, leading to my statement in the first paragraph. I am grateful I didn't need to make a claim. Imagine, you get in an accident or your property has damage, then your insurance company (that you pay thousands a year to) decides they don't feel like working. Stolen vehicle? You gotta hunt down the branch manager while the cops look for your car. To be fair, I can't speak for every department. People have positive reviews for vacations, roadside assistance, and others. But, the only successful communication I had was with their cancellation department. My suggestion is to promote her to branch manager. At least she knows how basic customer service works, plus she actually responded back and provided a solution to prevent auto renewal. I can't tell you if anyone else knows how to do that since I never heard back from them (specifically management). Also, they spammed me with life insurance scam letters like 4-5 a week. That could be at a corporate level issue but nonetheless. I went with USAA because I went to their customer support and heard back within 30 seconds- might be 30 days+ with this AAA branch. read more

On a hot sweltering day my car decides to act up. Being uninformed on car issues (I know how to turn on the engine and go! That's it) I decide to call AAA who tells me the wait is 1.5 hours (patience is not one of my virtues) The peanut gallery tells me to call a different roadside assistance company who will be able to get to me sooner and they do I'm then told I'd better not drive the car as i will ruin the rim of the tire Now then I cancelled my AAA order because another company came to my rescue. But now, I need a tow causing me lto start all over to get a tow. Are you following my story? I was lucky as the tow guy (Jonathan) who I cancelled helped me to get my order going again and he waited for me to get it ordered In less than 10 minutes he was over to save my day! Out of the sweltering heat into his air conditioned tow truck I waited as he loaded my vehicle to his truck bed. Heading to the tire place and all is good! Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)? Look no where else! AAA Hawaii is the only in-person office you can get it. The other option is online, which does give you options for multiple years, but you gotta pay international shipping because we live in Hawaii. :/ I'm not a AAA member, but you don't need to be to get an IDP (and passport photos, which you need). Coming here was very easy. It's located along Nimitz, next to Best Buy, in the Nimitz Center. There's a decent amount of parking around. Just park the stalls without any signage. Members have VIP parking out front. Inside is quite lively. I don't think anyone would be bored working there. The front desk receptionist was very friendly and sweet. She gave clear instructions on where I need to go. The entire process was SUPER QUICK. Took my passport photos (only $15 for a set of two), took my driver's license, and a few minutes later, I have my International Driving License ($20 for a year). You can choose your start date, so I chose the first day I rented my car on my travel. Overall, it was an awesome experience. Customer service was top notch. Everyone was so friendly, nice, and super efficient. Now I know where to get my passport photos now! It's cheaper than other places. I'll definitely come back.. cause I expect I'll need an IDP again! read more

If you are traveling to another country and was thinking about renting in a car, AAA on Nimitz Highway is probably the most easiest place to get a international drivers license. All you need is a valid drivers license. They have everything in the facility to make it happen, including a photo studio. AAA members get a discount on the photography services as well as other products that they sell in the store. They even have travel books maps and can help you plan your next vacation. We have been AAA PLUS members for over 20 years and never have I been as disappointed & let down as this branch. They do not return calls in a timely manner- which can make a big difference in trying to lock in a good deal. And despite the different numbers the answering service says to call, there is no answer. It was like a ping pong game calling the different numbers hoping to speak to someone. Even the number to call in an event of an emergency there was no answer. This was during office hours and my attempts started a day ago. This review is for Ridge!! He was truly an angel during such a scary moment. It stalled with my car suddenly stalling right on Keeaumoku and Kapiolani while I had my two kids in the car, both under five! I panicked and thankfully it started by the time it turned green but barely made it to the next side street. I called AAA and was able to set an appointment with ease via live agent for a battery charge. So grateful I was assigned Ridge, he did not take that long to arrive. Once he got there, he quickly realized it was not a battery issue. He was really patient to help figure it out. Now the car would start fine but taper off so he realized it was an intake valve issue. I was less than a mile from my house so I was praying I could just make it home without a tow. Since it would take maybe over an hour for a tow truck since they were all busy- mind you my kids are with me. Ridge was so gracious to offer to follow me home to make sure I got there safe. What a sweetie!! We did stall once after the bridge but he was right behind me willing to push but it started again with some pumps on the gas. Our parents aren't driving anymore, all siblings living in the mainland and our kids are working. We have close friends and relatives that we could count on if we needed a jump or run out of gas but we don't want to inconvenience them so my husband and I decided now is the right time to join AAA roadside assistance for our peace of mind. They are located on Nimitz Hwy on the opposite side of where the New Eagle Cafe was located. We parked in the covered stalls, walked around to the front and found that their front entrance was locked with a sign saying to use the back entrance. FYI: Go to the covered parking stalls, turn right and drive to the end of the building...there's stalls right outside of their back entrance. We were helped by Steven Ly. He informed us about the 3 different plans...Classic Service, AAA Plus Service and AAA Premier Service. We informed him that the AAA Plus Service fits our need. He said they have a special...the first year for the one we were interested in which is "Member & Adult", we'll be charged the "Member" price which will save us $51 ($159 vs $108). 2023 started out looking like this: - car break ins on our street the day after New Years - car batteries dead in one of our cars the day after New Years - tried to get gas at Costco and card said "declined" two days after New Years Now how's that for a trifecta??? Is this a foreshadowing of things to come? For every negative thing that comes with it, is a positive thing, and that's where AAA Hawaii comes into the picture. I've been a member for over 20 years but let my membership lapse out of sheer laziness. I had AAA mostly for the Disneyland discounts, remember those from years past? Hotels will also give you a discount, and some will actually check your AAA card. I've also gotten my International Driver's License through AAA (free of charge) so I could drive in Japan (a harrowing experience mentioned in one of my reviews on Toyota Rent-a-car in Gifu, Japan). I've locked myself out of my car as a college student in Florida and AAA was there for me way back then and they are still here for me now! I've recently decided to re-new after many years of non-activity, ironically during the height of the Covid pandemic. The deal was too good to pass up. Now the rates are up (don't remember what it is now) but TOTALLY WORTH IT - even if you don't use it, you have peace of mind knowing AAA will come through for you if you're stuck on some dark scary street in the middle of the night because your alternator went out, or your battery died, or you got locked out, or you have a flat, or you ran out of gas, or you need a tow...you get the picture. It's not only insurance for your car in the event crap hits the fan, it's peace of mind! Getting a battery changed was easier than navigating the Netflix movie menu; just go to the AAA Hawaii website, click on "request battery service" and a dispatcher comes out in a reasonable amount of time. They make sure that it's your battery and run diagnostics to rule out alternator or starter problems. Once they know for sure it's your battery giving you problems, they show you the diagnostics on a screen so you know for sure it's really your battery. They swap it right there in front of you too. Takes all but 10 to 15 minutes tops, even in the middle of the night (thanks Desmond from Empire Towing!!!) If you don't know what to get for the pickiest of pickiest people for Christmas or their birthdays and they already have everything, get them a very practical gift of an annual membership from AAA for $88 for the AAA plus which includes up to 100 miles of towing, free delivery and fuel if you run out of gas, four service calls a year, flat tire service, locksmith/lockout service, jumpstart and battery service, minor electrical diagnostics and repairs, etc. just check out their website, there's too many benefits to list; it's like $7.33 a month- way cheaper than two Starbucks lattes per month, that's for sure! No live person to communicate with to get assistance or help. Today I have been trying for over 3 hours to get roadside assistance for dead battery and out of gas. No service technician ever showed up to provide assistance or help. The service once was terrific but last couple years has rapidly declined. Not sure if I am getting the money worth. Especially when needed for emergency assistance. Been a member for nearly 40 years. This is the new world we live in... no hope for the future. AAA Hawaii is located off Nimitz in the Nimitz Center and has parking in the private lot they share with the other tenants in the building. They are all the way at the end on the ground floor near Best Buy. They have entrances on Nimitz and in the parking garage. It's covered parking but stalls are on the smaller side. I needed to get an IDP, International Driving Permit, and AAA is the spot to get this done. You need to bring 2 recently taken Passport photos, your valid Driver License, the completed form and $20 (cash or credit card is accepted). You can download the form to complete before going to save you some time. If you don't have access to a printer, no worries because they have blank forms there that you can fill out. If you don't have Passport photos, no worries! They can take it there for you for an extra charge ($15.68 as of July 2024). They make the entire process as easy and as convenient as possible for you. When you call the number listed on Yelp, there is a recording stating that you can just walk in to take care of this. I came in the morning on a weekday and walked in as instructed by their recording. There were a few people ahead of me but the total time I was there was less than 10 minutes. Staff were friendly and very efficient. Great job and I'll be back when this IDP expires in a year. read more

Fast and easy from start to finish. Used the GetHelp interactive service. It was very easy to schedule the battery service, only took a few minutes. The technician arrived in about an hour or so. I got notification via text from AAA that a technician was sent and also a call from the dispatch office. The technician also called me twice to let me know he was on his way and with an ETA and once he arrived. You can also see an estimated time and location of the technician via the app. The technician tested the battery and recommended it be replaced as the safe option. My options for replacing was by AAA, a place nearby like Firestone or at the cheapest place like Costco or Sam's. Well it was simpler just to get it done right now and not worry about scheduling and driving thought might have saved $25 to $30 at Firestone and $80 to $90 at Sam's (far away). The technician removed and took the old battery and installed the new one. Total time from arrival to finish about 30 minutes. Paid via charge card and got a receipt. The service was fast, easy and convenient. The key to all of it was the technician, Shaceton from O'Sung. He was professional, friendly and fast. My truck blew a hose tonight while my gf was out driving it to pick up dinner. She called me so I drove her car to go rescue her. I called AAA and got an automated answering system but since I couldn't give a specific address I was quickly connected to a live person. Well, Amber helped me secure a tow from O'Sung Towing Company. She said to expect a truck in about 2 hours but fortunately I was sitting at Stadium Mall so there was food places all around me where I could kill time and get fat. In less than a minute I got a call directly from O'Sung's saying they should be there in a half an hour! Less than a minute after that, I got another call from Josh, the driver who said he always fifteen minutes away. I don't think it was even 10 minutes and I saw the tow truck pulling into the parking lot. Living on the Big Island, I had never had a chance to visit a AAA office. While in Honolulu, I had to take some photos for a passport, so I decided to stop in (they are free for Premier members). It was really cool to see all of the different things AAA offers. It felt like an old school travel agency (are there many even around anymore?). There was a section of books for sale, and my daughter went crazy. AAA is also only one of two entities authorized to issue International driving permits. It was super easy and it only took about 5 minutes to get mine. Domestic AAA guide books (printed) are going away this year, so I was glad to be able to grab a few. They are really helpful. Keanu arrived before the estimated time of 8:40 a.m. and even called twice. Once that he was on his way and once when he arrived. Sad to say Drew told him my model was 2013 instead of 2014 and the driver did not carry that battery model. Luckily Keanu was able to run some diagnostics and gave me a printout on my battery and alternator functions. Keanu was fast, friendly and shook my hands when he arrived and when he left. My husband and I had to go get our IDP (International Driving Permit) for our upcoming honeymoon abroad. So as a AAA member, we of course went in to AAA to do it in person (there is an option to mail this in as well so you don't have to go in person). The experience was quick, friendly and as my husband said upon leaving "surprisingly painless", lol. Tiffany helped us and she was soooo nice and made the process super easy. I thought this place was just roadside assistance for old people. I realized after an office visit that they do all kinds of awesome things, not just tow trips! I went in to get my international drivers license, and for $20, it's good for 1 year and gives me additional driver credentials in a long list of countries (however, South America doesn't recognize it). When I was there, I noticed a whole lot of options for services provided- discounted movie tickets and other fun stuff, insurance for auto, House, renters, and life. They're a full service travel agent. They sell maps and guide books. The maps they sell are mostly USA and Europe, and it seems old fashioned, but if you're ever abroad with a dead cell phone or impossibly expensive data plan or out of service area or in the middle of the night with nobody to ask for directions, trust me when I say a paper map is awesome!!! My parents go to their AAA office and the agent plans out road trips for them and prints off all the maps. They live in the mainland and they don't have smart phones and they use 3 GPS navigators and all of them are broken. But they make it from NJ to AZ with the AAA maps! What really pushed me over the edge was that the honolulu AAA office does passport photos. $10 for 2 (non-member price) or $7 for 2 (AAA member price). They can even adjust the photo size for other international (non-USA) passports. Costco and Long's don't offer this service with their passport photos. I went to some place in mapunapuna to try and get Irish passport photos and I spent like $40 on 2 photos that were grainy and unusable. AAA was able to do what has been impossible! When they did do my Irish passport photos, it was tricky bc the guidelines are SO specific and definitely different than USA passports. So it took a few tries, but they were so nice about it. Like, extremely nice and they kept trying so I'd have a useable photo. Even though it took a few misprints, they kept going until we got the money shot. I so appreciated it. Oh, and they have a notary public! I'm going to get a quote for house insurance and maybe auto to see how they stack up. They're definitely nicer than the current agents I use! "You never know when..." ... th unexpected breakdown happens to your car when you are driving. Over the years it has happened more times than I care to remember. Bad battery, flat tires, the car just deciding not to start for unknown reasons. The scariest time was a few years ago when In the afternoon rush hour traffic the car decides to "give up the ghost" and stops in the middle lane on the freeway near the Sears distribution center in Pearl City. Slow traffic kept it from being a fender bender or worse. Luckily, Good Samaritan Bruddahs helped me get da car to the shoulder and within 30 minutes AAA got the tow truck to my location and I was able to get my car to my mechanic. Always efficient and courteous, the dispatcher and tow drivers have always been great and have never been a problem or concern. Always able to count on them, a welcome relief during a stressful car event. But as others have pointed out AAA also provides free maps and guide books for areas across the country. Well written and a valuable reference, the Guide books are a wealth of information and a good complimentary source of information to anything you would get off your tablet or cellphone. They have offices across the country and your membership allows you to walk in to any location. An added benefit is that many hotels and businesses offer discounts by showing your card. It pays to ask as the discounts add up to bigger savings. Over the many years we have been AAA members we have been able to utilize their travel information and also their emergency tow services. We even bought their battery, quick installation and a nice warranty. The Honolulu AAA office is located at the Nimitz Center which is the two story shopping complex next to Best Buy, just Ewa of Best Buy. Mahalos AAA Honolulu for 11 years of peace of mind. Update note to this review- just as I finished writing this review my car developed a hard start and then wouldn't start at all after I got home. AAA to da rescue! They did a diagnostic and determined nothing wrong with the charging system so the battery was replaced, free of charge. No hassle and they come right to you. Excellent! read more

I called the office this morning with a billing question. Agent named "Zee" answered my questions with full sarcasm and hung up mid-conversation. Thinking it was accidental, I called back. It was not accidental. It was clear she was having a bad morning. She skirted around my basic questions and did not address my concerns. I am a Plus member and had also enrolled my family, and have always respected this company for the past twenty years. Today I immediately cancelled my renewal membership, coming up in 2 weeks, due to the unprofessionalism and having left me with a bad taste for being a loyal customer. It seemed there was so supervisor on duty, and "Zee" interrupted me everytime I asked to speak to someone in charge. Truly a regrettable and preventable bad experience. read more

Had a very bad experience yesterday that I want tell. I called AAA needing them to check my battery. In the morning, I arranged to have them come out at 2pm.The lady said no problem. I arranged my day to be home before 2pm. No one came out. I called AAA they said you need to call an hour ahead of the time you want. I had to wait an hour. The tech came at 3pm and checked my battery and immediately got one out of the van without telling me if I needed one. He wrote up the bill and I said I just purchased one recently. He went to his van, called AAA, came back and said you purchased one in 2022. I had already given him my credit card and he charged it. He said I need to call AAA to get reimbursement because I bought the last one pro rated I was entitled to reimbursement.. I spent that night writing up the form they sent me and faxed it in Sunday. SUnday a woman named Christen called me and said no you are not entitled a reimbursement. I was very dissappointed in the different stories I received as well as the time and effort I put in to get the paper work done, pay for fax and printing and the rudeness i received from the service...from being an hour late to the mis information. First time visiting AAA in Honolulu to get an International Driving Permit and it was a breeze. They take your photo there and was in and out in about a half hour if that. Service was friendly and parking was easy. read more

Came to apply for an international driving permit, even though I'm no longer an AAA member, and also have my photo taken for the required 2 passport sized photos. Wonderful wonderful assistance by Holly, she is DA BESTEST, lots of Aloha. Walked out having taken the best photo of my life lol and the permit in hand. Holly asked if I was a member, and when I said no, wasn't pushy about getting me to become a member. Would definitely recommend coming here to get your passport photo taken, very professional (soft backlit lighting, professional camera, and they ask you if you're happy with your photo before they print it!) As a comparison, the photos I took last week for my passport renewal was done at CVS, and they pulled down a mini projector screen next to the veggie cooler and took my photo with a point and shoot AND it cost more. I mean, the person who helped me with the photo at CVS was very nice, but I won't be going back to CVS for a passport photo shoot. read more
