Supporting local businesses is important to me, so I decided to give A1 Smog in Lawndale a try for the first time--and I'm glad I did! From start to finish, everything was smooth sailing. They answered all of my questions promptly through Yelp, responded quickly, and even made me feel welcomed before I had even arrived. No upselling, no surprises--just honest, straightforward business. That's refreshing these days. I came in on a Friday morning, and they had me in and out exactly within the promised timeframe. Parking was easy, and they even have a comfortable waiting area to escape the blazing South Bay sun. My sunscreen definitely appreciated the break! A big thank you to Jose for taking great care of both me and my beloved Honda EG. (Fellow car enthusiasts know...our cars are basically family members. ) He was professional, friendly, and made the entire process stress-free. I actually grew up in Lawndale and lived here for 19 years, so it was nice to finally experience a local business that truly delivers on customer service. As a business owner myself, I know that honest communication and treating customers well are what keep people coming back. I've found my new go-to smog shop and will definitely be returning for future smogs. I'll also be recommending A1 Smog to my friends and family. Thanks again, Jose, for making something as routine as a smog check a genuinely pleasant experience! read more

Easy in and out. No appointment. Honored the coupon I found online. Jose was a pleasure to work with. Will return for my next STAR Smog Check. FYI, Bob's automotive down the street bait and switched me once I arrived and tried to charge me three times the coupon price because I was testing a 2014 Porsche 911. Jose was honest!!! read more

Always a pleasure to have our smog test done in this place. Early to start and a short time to wait. Plus Bryan is such a dedicated person, smiles and greets customers and gets the job done. Value or price you pay is reasonable. Come early before 8am when it opens so you'll be the 1st customer when it opens! read more

On 9/05/26 around 3:30 I came to get my smog checked. Unfortunately, I didn't pass but the nice manger was kinda enough to make suggestions for a retest. Hopefully to get passed next time. On 9/26/26 I showed up at the same time. I eagerly double parked my vehicle, only to get out and ask if I could be taken that day. The young employee told me he doesn't take vehicles past 3:00. I explained that last time I was serviced at 3:30. I asked how many people were ahead of me. He said the car in the bay and one in the lot. I asked if he could take me because I was time I was serviced last time around the same time and it was a simple retest. Look at the picture for proof! Check the time and day. Not lying here. Well, he refused to take me. Even though he had the time and space. Just reiterated the hours. I told him " you don't want to deal with it, I'm not going to argue." I step into my car to call a neighboring smog check center. As I'm in the car (with it running idle) making a quick call he approaches my vehicle and tells me I'm taking two parts spots. Know how long my phone call was in the car? 16 SECONDS! Now what could've been done within 25 minutes has lead to a review that will last you forever. Sorry to the nice owner I met before. Your employee clearly doesn't care and will chase customers out so he can enjoy his Saturday early. read more

Excellent place for a quick smog check. Staff is friendly. Once your car is in it only takes about 20 minutes. If you have an older model car it will take longer because they can't just check the OBD 2 information from the ECU. I have an 82 corvette which required a different process to pass smog. A pain but this place still does it. Most places will not smog an older car. They do it on Tuesdays and Fridays. read more

I have been taking my diesel truck for 15 years to this same location. Today I came for a smog check, even brought the last smog check paperwork with me because the guy working there is not the owner. He did the pedal test and saw light smoke and said he can't pass it because it has smoke. I was shocked because the truck runs the exact same as it has for those 15 years and nothing has changed. I explained California law says the smoke can't remain in the air for more than three seconds not if you see smoke. He said if he sees smoke he won't do it. No problem I left quickly and went to another station on the same block and passed. I won't be bringing any of my three cars back here again. I hope the owner realizes he's losing customers. read more

Never thought that getting a smog check on our car would be so easy and painless. Came in without an appointment. Didn't have to wait long to be assisted. Maybe 10 minutes since there was one car ahead of us. Jose did a fantastic job of explaining the pricing, and getting right to work on the smog test. The smog check took less than 10 minutes to complete. Can't get any better than that. read more

I can understand wanting to go home but when you're in the service industry that is based on the luck of Yelp leading to your business and a desire to have great word of mouth based on quality service, then you may want to adhere to your Yelp hours. I made it to this business 15 minutes before closing and the only car was pulling off. I was told that car was the last car. To add insult to injury, he thought it'd be cute to say his hours were the same tomorrow. I won't be back and won't suggest you go here either! read more

I've been going for the last 5 years. Place is pretty small with long line but he is pretty quick in running the test.

I come here for all of my cars and all of our DMV registration renewal notices that mandates a smog test. With the coupon and after paying for the process, taxes and the certificate fees your all-in total in 2025 is a little over $50, or about $53 to be more precise. The service is friendly. The process is fast, depending on if any wait with others ahead of you. I'd refer and recommend this place. read more

I randomly found this place on yeIp. I came here to get my Honda accord checked last Saturday. When we go there at 9 am, there were already 2 customers ahead of me. The wait wasn't too bad, approximately 30mins. Once it was our turn, the smog check was about 20 mins or less and went pretty smoothly. The gentlemen doing our smog check was fairly kind, direct and clear about the service and pricing. read more

Jose is the best! I just had the best experience at this place. I highly recommend this spot for great friendly service.

The hours posted everywhere says 5:30 close time. Im here at 4:55pm and was told that they actually stop taking customers at 5pm. Its not 5pm yet, but they have 2 cars to do so they dont have time today. The shop should be clear about their hours. In the automotive space misleading customers is unprofessional. I wont be back. If you use this place, I'd either call ahead or show up well before they close. read more

Came here in the mid afternoon after going to the smog center that I usually go to , which I found out ended up closing. The smog center had a ton of positive reviews so I decided to give it a try. after arriving, there was one car pulling out, so it was perfect as I pulled in. A young man happened to be working on a Monday, and I was extremely impressed with his professionalism and knowledge. He said the car will be done in around 12 minutes. I got on a work call and before I knew it, my car was ready . He then informed me that I can either complete the registration online which the tags would take about 2 to 3 weeks or I could go straight to AAA or directly to the DMV and I could get my tags right then and there. I hadn't even considered going to AAA, but I've had a membership long time so I think this young man for suggesting AAA because I was able to get my tags the same day . Complete convenience, professionalism and suggestions here . Very happy with the service and value of this smog check center! read more
