It would have been nice to be told that if my check engine light is on before I'm smog tested, I'd fail. I knew my light had been on for weeks because I thought it was related to continues recalls on my vehicle. After I was tested and called up to get my car, was told my check engine light is on and I said I know. Charged me anyway, Paid $50 cash for the "get out of a ticket" piece of paper in case I'm pulled over since it's pass my due date to register. I suppose it's a piece of mind with this receipt that I already tried to smog it. Still would have been nice to be told I'd fail no matter what though. And that the debit card machine was broken. read more

I found this place on Yelp after unsuccessfully trying to get my car smogged at another nearby shop. I was glad to find another place open on Sunday without having to drive too far. I pulled into one of the 2 parking spots and walked in the shop. It was empty as the technician was just finishing up with another customer. He soon noticed me and quickly got the process started. To my relief he got into my car and pulled it on the dyno right away. About 20 minutes later and it was all done. I barely passed and he suggested I do some maintenance on the car. In all honesty, it probably needs it. The cost was $50 which is why I give 4/5 stars. I don't consider that a good price for a smog test, but they *are* open on Sundays which is just about the only day I have free time to do things like this. read more

Verbal estimate was different from actual estimate. Technician neglected to issue a written estimate before he began the smog check. We trusted that the verbal estimate was going to be the same as the written estimate. This was an unpleasant experience at A and Z Smog. The worst thing about having (4) four vehicles is having to get the smog check. BUT, the gentleman I dealt with over the phone and in person was fast, friendly. I've now taken (2) of my VW's to him, gas and diesel, with out any issues. The best thing I can say about going here is that he is fast. Not a second of my time was wasted. This man is a liar. My husbands car had no reverse, so this guy was pushing his vehicle backwards and telling my dad to jump in. My dad was not able to get in in time and our car hit another vehicle. This guy refused to give out his insurance info and then lied to our insurance company telling them that my husband (who wasnt even there) is the one who pushed the car. This place is a joke! In fact, I found out they lost their license for a year because of violations and recently just opened back up. Because of that, any opportunity they can to fail you, they will! They failed me because of an error code that they had no idea what the code meant and told me I had to see my mechanic. I went to my mechanic and he said this didn't make any sense. I then go to another smog place and they told me this code was not a "fail code" and I should not have been failed. I didn't even bother to go back to them to get s refund because I didn't want to waste anymore time with such an unprofessional and inefficient place! read more

ILLEGAL AND UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES!!! STAY AWAY.... I took my mother-in-law's car there to get smog... Keep in mind she is a little old lady who only drives 3000 to 4000 miles a year. The check engine light is off and there were no stored codes which would be an automatic failure if either of these items had a problem ..He did the complete test and everything passed with flying colors but he said there is a pending code so he failed her car. I took it to a mechanic, the mechanic did a complete inspection and hooked up his scan tool... He showed me on his scan tool that everything related to passing a smog test was all green and marked OK. He said there is no reason for this vehicle to have failed so I should take it back... When I took the car back and told this man what the mechanic said and that the pending code is not a reason for failure the man at the smog place just laughed and said that the mechanic is not the one with the state license and therefore HE gets to choose which cars pass and which ones don't. So I took it to a second mechanic and he said the same exact thing as the first mechanic... That there is no reason that this car failed. I took it to another smog place right around the corner and explained to that gentleman what I'm going through and he did his test and as I stated before... The car passed with flying colors... He also said that A to Z smog is practicing illegally and I am not the first customer that was failed by A to Z smog only to bring it to this second company and have it pass without issue. He has been reported to the state smog board and they will be following up on mine and many other complaints and this is not the first time he's been reported for these type of practices and he has lost his license previously... Hopefully the state will step in and exclude this man from running his illegal business our town. Do all of yourselves a favor and stay clear of this place. OK here is an update... I filed my complaint with the California State Bureau of automotive repair and they went to his shop and I was informed that he did admit to what I said. They notified him that what he did was a violation and they got him to refund my money and the state employee also informed me that upon inspecting this shop he found several other violations but could not tell me what they were or what the final outcome or penalty is going to be towards this shop. So as I stated previously... Just stay away from A to Z smog. read more
