After not being able to get tattooed for a few years due to moving and having a kid, my wife gave me an ultimatum - either get back to work on my sleeve or lose my tattoo cred in her eyes...forever! Not wanting to lose cred, I started researching shops in my area. A Thin Line was the best reviewed and I liked the portfolios, so I went ahead and sent an email using the contact link. Alex and I spent some time going back and forth with scheduling and deposit requirements and I stopped by to put my money where my mouth is. Being that I am a pain in the ass, I showed up to the appointment with a flash piece and a car air freshener and informed the artist, Emily, that I wanted something totally custom on both...and gave her a budget cap. Not only did she draw me out a totally rockin Sailor Jerry style custom piece and phrase tattoo (separate tats), but she did it for under budget. Emily (and everyone else in the shop) was totally professional while being seriously OCD about getting the design perfect (definitely a compliment in this case). The shop staff (Emily, Alex, Hershey ((I think)), and Matt) that was on hand was a fun group to hang with and kept me laughing through the tattoo process (because, no one gets tatted because it feels good). The shop was clean, comfortable, artistic, and generally awesome. Each artist has their own little room with their own music, so there is total privacy if needed, or the doors can be opened and other artists can wander in and out. I will be back, and poor Emily is going to be stuck dealing with me being a tattoo pain in the ass for as long as I can keep generating funds for ink. I will also be sending as many referrals as I can to this shop. Just wanted to update: I have been going to Thin Line Plainfield for well over a year now working on a sleeve and I couldn't be happier. Whenever I am in for a session, any artists that aren't currently working come and hang out. I would count them among my buddies, now. Emily always takes the time to make sure the piece is as perfect as possible, and adds her expertise every time. We are now finishing up the background part of the forearm. Sam Jones is an amazing piercer and will answer any questions you may have. My sis and I recently went there to get our rooks pierced. They were so clean and sanitized. DO NOT GET A TATTOO FROM ABEL. I recently got a tattoo from him and while the job was alright, he was right down the most unpleasant person I have ever met. He made the whole experience a horrible one. I have several tattoos and I have never been more disappointed with the treatment I received. Not to mention the fact that he was so apprehensive to tattoo my foot. If you don't like tattooing feet, then you should just say so from the get go and recommend another artist. The only couple of things I heard from him during a 2+ hour tattoo were, "you knew it was gonna hurt" (even though I never complained), "you have dogs, it's gonna get infected you'll see" and "it's gonna fade that's why I don't like doing tattoos on feet." The one star that I gave in the rating is for the other people in the establishment..... they were all very nice. read more

While the reviews for the piercing artist seem to be good, the tattoo artist there, Brian, and the service from the staff would be rated less than zero. I made an appointment for 2 people to get a tattoo together, at the same time. It was stressed by Alex that they needed to come in to have a consultation with the artists' who would be drawing them. Alex said that one artist could do both people and I explained that they wanted them done at the same time. He suggested sending a picture, and I said sure, I could even text one. He replied that I could not really text to a landline in a condescending way. I should have known then!! We drove an hour on a Sunday for a 5pm appointment to meet Brian who informed us that we only had an appointment with him, and we did not need to see two different artists, he could make the sketch for both. This was the opposite of what Alex explained, and from my experience getting a tattoo, you want the artist drawing it to be the person giving you the tattoo. When I explained to Brian a couple of times the contradictions between Alex's statements and his, he just kept repeating himself that he could do both. I told him we sent a picture also per Alex's instructions, and he looked up the picture, for the first time, at that moment. He stated that he could draw the picture for both because it looks basic. OF COURSE it was a basic drawing because a non artist drew it! Brian then asked if we wanted the consult. Why would we trust anyone there after the condescending and unprofessional attitudes. We left and are only regret is wasting the time. We will go to Revolution tattoo, always treated well there and with respect! Great experience! I have a tattoo on my left arm and a sleeve in progress on my right arm, both by different artists. I went here to get a calf tattoo done by Daniel. I asked him to do a simple Eye of Horus design, but he asked me if I'd be open to trying his interpretation on this design. It came out AWESOME. MUCH better than what I asked for to begin with. It's now my favorite tattoo! Very realistic, and I get tons of compliments. Shop is clean, and the artists are classy and professional. read more

Went to this place three separate times. The first time with my daughter. The environment was very unprofessional. The conversation between Adam and Scott was borderline sexual harassment. The work was ok but Scott was unwilling to work with me to see my vision come to life. So I went to Brendan at the constable instead and my wrist tattoo is beautiful. this place was spectacular. when talking with the receptionist about my ideas, and how i wanted bold color, i was referred to my artist MATT. When he came in and at first was kind of intimidating. but after talking with him about what i wanted done, and showing him my initial design, he made a few suggestions, and totally revamped it into a better, much cooler design. Okay let me start off by saying that I was so pissed with this stupid unnecessary thing that happened. So I wanted to get my nose pierced right so I heard about this place through a friend and I was like great I'm gonna go here. So I called on a Thursday and asked if they had times for Friday I was talking to someone named "Sam" so I booked my appointment for my piercing and I was so excited. I then decided that I actually wanted to do it on a Saturday or Sunday because me and my aunt wanted to get a piercing done together and she was unavailable on Friday. So I call to change the appointment and ask if they have any timings. "Sam" goes ahead and very rudely tells me that they 1. Don't take appointments over the phone (when I called early that day and made an appoint with the same person ) and 2. That they were fully booked. I was like okay so I left it at that. Exactly one hour later my aunt calls and "Sam" answers the phone she asks if on Saturday they have any available timings and "Sam" begins to list out serval timings they have and then asks if she would like to book an appointment. I was lied to for no reason and I was spoken to so rudely I was so pissed that I didn't even end up going there for my piercing. I needed a cover up for a really bad tattoo and only had a vague idea of what I wanted. Scott was very candid and professional. I took him several pictures of possible tattoos and he combined the best to create one bad ass piece of art. Ended up with a dragon family in black and grey and Scott's line work and shading is superb! Very clean and modern shop. I recommend anyone wanting some ink to stop by and talk to the artists. My 15 y/o daughter scheduled an ear piercing over the phone and when we went the smug looking receptionist told us that we should've brought a government i.d. for my dtr. She said one with a picture like a school i.d. No one in that office told my daughter over the phone that we needed to bring those. It was ridiculous. So we had to reschedule a couple weeks after. When we went back my daughter showed her school id but then they told us we should've brought her birth certificate or passport. That stupid receptionist never told us to bring those additional documents before. So nevermind. We just cancelled and walked away. What a nightmare! We wasted our time going there twice. They need to to not hire stupid people in their front desk or they better train them well. Never going back there ever again! read more

Let me first start off by saying I love my tattoo. It means a lot to me and I do think it is well done. Originally, I had no intention to leave a review one way or another, but months later, my experience still kind of nags at me. Getting a tattoo done, especially my first here, was not the best. I understand my tattoo, which is a motto of a city of importance to me, is not the most flashy or exciting thing these artists ink, but it is important enough for me to get it tattooed on my body forever. When I asked what artists were the best with lettering, I was told any of them would do, which didn't inspire much confidence. I was blindly assigned to Bill, handed in my sketches, which were scanned in, and left with an appointment. When I came back for that appointment, Bill had never seen my design and had no idea what I was in for. Luckily, I brought my scans with me, he rescanned them in, and played around with them in Photoshop. When I told him part of the design was too big to go with the lettering, he was really bent out of shape and begrudgingly changed it after I had to reexplain that I didn't want it any different, only a little bit smaller in the program. Then without really giving me much time to look at the design on my arm he went to work. He didn't really ask or care what my design was about and seemed to think the whole thing was kind of a waste of his time. Again, I get it, not a super exciting tattoo, but it means a lot to me and I was paying and tipping him for his time...My friend made a comment about how I had just graduated college and he went on a rant about what a waste of time and money he thinks college is. My tattoo was quick and he went over care instructions very thoroughly. Ultimately, I left very happy with my tattoo and not very happy with the experience my artist gave me. Edit: the manager reached out and made amends. He was great and I went in to get my tragus pierced by Kenny and had a great experience! read more

I went for a consultation and was not impressed. The idea of getting my first tattoo done was scary and this place did not offer me ant comfort. The artist drew a bunch of lines and circles as a sketch and played it off as if they knew exactly what I wanted. They right away scammed me into giving them $50 dollars and when booked an appointment for me regardless. I was very upset when I left and once I called to cancel my appointment, no one informed me that I would be loosing my money, asked if I would like to reschedule, or what the problem was. I didn't feel like fighting with a bunch of dbags so I left it at that. Won't be returning. read more

This is a nice place to have a tattoo done and a nice place to get a piercing, but if you schedule an appointment and need to cancel it (there is a 50$ deposit) and you call a month in advance to cancel it they don't give your down payment back (due to the booking time with the artist). This is not very good customer service and they pocket your money. It's sad that they are not able to address an unforeseen change in the lives of their customers because they just lost future business. I'm really disappointed as even when I was in Las Vegas and scheduled a tattoo, they refunded my down payment for an unforeseen issue (hospitalization). Be aware that if you schedule your appointment, you spend 50$ to schedule it and it is non-refundable. Will not be going back here read more

Haven't had the pleasure of getting an actual piercing by Kenny but he's been phenomenal in helping me deal with botched piercings done elsewhere as well as helping to design custom jewelry for previous ear and genital piercings. I walked into A Thin Line tattoo eager to get my first ink. The place had come so highly recommended that I had positive expectations. When the artist I'd chosen from his online portfolio came out, he was borderline hostile. He seemed annoyed by the simplicity and small size of the tattoo I wanted. I'd told the receptionist on the phone that this was my first foray and I may need some help with the design I was bringing in (she assured me I'd get it), but this man was impatient and reluctant to make any suggestions. He gave me an uncivil minute of his time before asking me if I wanted to do it right then. I said yes (a bit tentatively since we hadn't reached any conclusions) and he disappeared leaving me in the waiting room with no idea of what was going on. This tattoo is important to me--it represents my third victory over cancer. I don't want it to be tainted by a condescending attitude and impatience...so I sucked up my courage and left. I'll try another place another day, but to be honest, this really makes me wonder if I want to try again. I hope he was just having a bad day--he certainly didn't do anything to improve mine or to shine a positive light on the business he works for. read more

The tattoo shop is very nice with talented people but I had a tattooer named Brian who was rather rude and didn't seem interested in helping me bounce ideas for what I want he seemed pissed that I didn't know exactly what I wanted after we came up with an idea he said he would draw something up over night which he did not do I came in the next day and he decided to just free hand a design with sharpie on my arm. He promised it would come out more detail once he put shading into it with the actual tattoo gun and so forth . So I went with it in the end it came out shaky rushed and in complete and I'm sure it would have came out a lot better more planned and drawn out. In the end I spent over 400 for an ok tattoo . I have had 3 pieces done by 2 different artists here (emily and daniel)and the experience was awesome. I took a chance recently and tried a new artist (to me-nikki) and should have went with my gut feeling. I've seen work done by this artist and loved it. I go in with what I think is a small simple piece and was frustrated with the initial experience. It was obvious early on that I would have to get a touch up. I've never even had to get one on my 20 yr old tattoo! I thought maybe they had a bad or off day. I go in for the touch up and the artist was late, I understand, life happens. I should have known from the start of the session. Goes to shave any hair from my arm, I thought it felt odd, the cap was on the razor the whole time! Struggled to get the gun together for quite some time, kept complaining back/neck/shoulders hurt due to sleeping weird, so i offered a suggestion to raise the stand my arm was on. The artist couldn't loosen it to move it on their own, I had to (and was super easy, 2 finger tight at the most), artist couldn't tighten it well either. Wanted a letter fixed that faded, would go through all the motions as if the needle was touching me (but wasn't), wiping the ink off me that poured from the gun, and asked me how I liked it 3 times when the needle never touched my skin! Had to tell them to finish the letter 3 times! The kicker is that while cleaning the gun to change inks, the artist was literally falling asleep! A times, the hand was light and minimal pain, other times it was very rough and at one point was gauged with the needles. To the point the needles had flung out of my skin leaving a drag in color in a place that wasn't wanted. I'm not a wuss by any means for tattoos but this was a bit much. Had to stop the session to have other coworkers talk to this person cause i was not comfortable with a sleeping person tattooing me and taking it upon themselves to add what they want to me. Was supposed to be a simple touch up and the more the artist kept "highlighting"it, the whole image had changed. The artist ended up adding things when they weren't supposed to. I thought they were starting to redo a line, then just added a black area that I never said I wanted. They said "putting this here really makes the color pop". Well I can't take it away now. Gotta do what we can to fix it. I am hoping this heals well and I don't regret not just paying someone else to fix it. Hate to say, I couldn't wait to get out of their fast enough. From now on, stuck to the 2 artists I've not had a horrible experience with. read more

Great place! The crew there is welcoming, knowledgable and nice! Recently I went to see Kenny for a piercing and he's amazing! He knows his stuff and definitely takes the time to explain the procedure, after care and different options. I have gotten piercings before but I was definitely impressed by his positive attitude and love for his craft. I definitely recommend going there for your first or tenth piercing because each and every time he will give his all to make sure he calms your nerves and walks you through it. I recently called about questions and concerns about my piercing and as always just a kind and welcoming personality. He's full of energy and willing to do whatever he possibly can to make sure you're happy. He's extremely clean and follows proper protocols to keep sanitation a priority. Amazing place! Walked in on a Wednesday afternoon just to look. (famous last words, right?) They had a time available. I didn't know any of the artist, so jokingly I said give me the best one. Scott sat me down and talked to me about what I wanted. Being an artist, I have a goofy little symbol that I have donned my artwork with since I was in high school (mind you I am in my 40's now) Scott totally understood the meaning behind it and what it meant to me. I brought it in from a painting I did and he tattooed it exactly the same way it was in the picture. I am 100% satisfied and will be returning to have Scott do some more work, new and touch up. If you are thinking about getting a tattoo or piercing, definitely stop by. The prices are reasonable, very clean and professional tattoo parlor. Just make sure to make an appointment.
