Unfortunately for people who may not be prepared like I was on a Sunday morning at 11am, I immediately cramped up and knew I couldn't continue with class (which was a bit crowded anyway). I asked for the instructor for some help and he guided me to foam roll my calf, but alas it was really bad - hard to tell if I simply didnt stretch or if I didnt have enough water beforehand. In any case typically the body conditioning is extreme for 30 minutes and then to a bit more technique on the various bags and rotating to one on one sparring. So generally instruction is good but more advice on stretching and reduction of injury would help. Lockers should be clipped as there always seems to none available. Cleaning is also very much needed as the floor is quite bad, spit buckets filled with trash. Bring your own towel (for sweat) and water bottle.

When I first wanted to start working out, I was fairly uncomfortable with the idea of being in a huge gym and having to work out in front of people. I looked for a long time to find a space that was close to me that offered privacy. Sevenbell was one of those gyms, and while it was a little inconvenient to get to from my location, I decided to give it a try. I believe it was one of the best decisions I made. The gym is always spotless, never crowded, and I always felt comfortable in the space. When I went here (I no longer live in the area and have since changed gyms) I actually looked forward to coming every day, because I knew I would not have to sit around and wait for a machine to be free, or have to deal with rude people making noise and slamming weights. If you are like me and are looking for a gym that is clean, quiet, and accepting of everyone no matter where they are on their fitness journey, then this is the place for you. It is well worth the price and I could not be happier with the time I had spent there. Also, the personal trainers are amazing. I worked with Jesse while I was there, and I felt he did a great job with giving me a foundation to work with in my personal workouts. Cam (who is like 6'5 and looks like The Hulk after he transforms) walked by me one day and mentioned that I looked bigger, and that my form was good. It felt like I won the lottery :)

Gashford's training sessions mix Muay Thai and regular weight lifting with some cardio. In only a couple months, I feel much stronger and have noticed increased focus and energy during the day after each session. He also has helped with meal planning and explains the science behind his workouts which i really appreciate. I've never really seen more than 10-15 people in the facility at a time, and as someone who hates big gyms, it's a super welcoming environments for complete newbies like myself. There was times when I would just mire the pictures all over the gym and really look at the history of how boxing came to be. I was offered to get some mitt work from one of the trainers but respectfully declined and was thankful though because some gyms just let you come in and out which is the goal overall. The gym was pretty busy at the time as well because the nearby hs youth came by for a fundraiser and there was free food and just prizes being given to the youth which was nice to see. I was also able to train near Pro boxers that were being filmed by either Top Rank/Dazn and it was amazing! I really was fanboying it out since I was training there and being surrounded by so much! There is no better gym in New York…read more Here you can not only find some of the most talented fighters in New York, but also friendly folks (both members and trainers assistants) who make it their goal to work with you to make you the best you can be. This gym also has a reputation for helping folks cut weight. I know many members who have lost 30 - 80 (yes, 80!) lbs here! I myself saw a max loss of 28 lbs. (202 down to 174 at one point.) Greg Ardon, the unassuming owner of this gym (known for his training of Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby), has a patient, quiet style that is combined with his extreme knowledge of fighting and a slick sense of humor. With that being said, the biggest lessons you learn here are modesty, self-confidence, and courtesy. These three things are more important than any bag you can hit, weight you can lift, or rope you can skip. I highly recommend you try this gym. 2011 Update: This gym is now officially a pro gym. That means they can train pro fighters, represent pro fighters, and their fighters can compete on a professional level, as well.

I was in a bad place when I decided to try boxing. But I knew I was angry and wanted to punch something, so boxing was the light bulb that went off in my head. Immediately inspired I booked it to the subway station. 45 minutes later I almost got cold feet on the 1 train thinking I couldn't walk into a boxing gym, I just thought I didn't belong. The lady at the front desk helped wash away my fears. She was so welcoming and genuine I became a little more comfortable. I signed up and continued to go (nearly weekly) until I left New York. All of the trainers are knowledgeable and good people. But no one tested me as much as Eric Kelly did. He had a nickname for me, 13, because apparently that's how old I look. He was brash, no nonsense, demanding your best only and always. It was exactly what I needed, I improved, I became strong, and most importantly I saw my limits and pushed past them, which was so rewarding. I've been to about 8 different Muay Thai gyms in the city and brooklyn and this is one of my favorites because it's not to crowded and down to earth. Might not be the best looking of all the gyms but they are just starting out and really deserve the support that will take them to the next level.
