The place is way overstaffed. We had way too many people just hovering over our table. We had the small plates with cleansing napkins set down and removed no less than 5 times by different people. We were constantly on edge waiting for someone to interrupt our dinner. For the price, I expect staff to be able to anticipate customer needs better without breathing down our necks. Good food but not quite there on the service style for the price.

"Oh, my aching tentacles" (Squidward T)…read more My friend and I had the fortune of stumbling upon A Grade after becoming lost and hungry in the steep Ribeira alleyways of Porto. Our eight arms and legs were hurting, so we needed to sit down, rest, and eat! A Grade has been recommended by both Rick Steves and Lonely Planet in the past for their delicious traditional dishes, so even though this family-run restaurant is hidden away from more touristy areas, reservations are generally needed. Seating is limited in this small space, and all tables had reserved signs on them upon our arrival. In desperation we asked to be squeezed in, and they graciously accommodated us. We couldn't believe our luck as we noticed a handful of parties were turned away after us. An American couple sitting next to us had been referred to A Grade by locals to sample the best octopus in the city. We had planned on ordering the seafood rice, but changed our minds after our conversation with them. We ordered the octopus fillets with rice, and after one bite it octopied our hearts! Sooo tender! It really did somewhat taste like chicken! There may have been a bit of guilt involved in eating this dish after having watched "My Octopus Teacher" last year, though not enough to stop devouring the plate. We also ordered the grilled sardines and some salt cod fritters (Pasteis de Bacalhau)--both were excellent. Our waiter was professional and possessed a spectacularly witty sense of humor, entertaining us throughout our meal. I highly recommend eating at A Grade...and I give it an A grade! If you're as lucky as us, you might even hear a Fado performance from another restaurant around the corner. I'm guessing the English translation of the song was, "I want to hold your hand, hand, hand, hand... hand, hand, hand, hand." **Credit cards are accepted here, but they prefer payment by cash.

Service here was done from a smaller table adjacent and servers literally finish prepare and serve your entrees to a separate plate for you and give you your sides. Almost like mom serving you up and giving you access to more later. Servings are huge and many dishes come with potatoes but quietly include a fantastic rice with a slight smoky flavor and a huge vegetable stir fry (not listed in menu description). I ordered the Iberian roast pork and she got the Sea Bream special. Both under 20 Euros. We also got one salad to share. Omg it was huge-so glad we didn't each get one! Lightly dressed with olive oil on the side we didn't need. One of the best salads I've had in a long time. Wine and drink list large and good. Jose was such a professional great server as was all of the staff. Fun to watch the care they put into service. The food was fantastic and more than ample. We couldn't quite finish it all but believe me I tried! Price was very moderate for such great food and service in such a nice large classically decorated restaurant and I'd go back in a heart beat. Locals seemed more present than tourists. If you are looking for great variety of fish, meats, veg,, and drinks at a mid level price, this is one of the best choices you could make!! Obrigado Jose!

You'll find traditional Portuguese food at Abadia do Porto…read more We started off with the octopus with parsley sauce and the prawns fried in garlic sauce. The octopus was perfectly cooked with loads of chopped white onion and parsley atop. So simple and refreshing. I loved the prawns and had to order the bread (also great) to mop up that sauce! Looking back, these two dishes were at the top of our list during our week stay. For entrees, we ordered the roast Iberian pork neck (single portion) with chestnuts and it was rich and satisfying. As an afterthought, my fiancé ordered the Bacalhau (ok) and didn't realize it came with sides of cabbage and rice too. Way too much food, especially for just the two of us. Good thing we ordered the "single" portions! We couldn't finish either of the two entrees and could have done without the fish, but hey when in Portugal, we wanted to try everything the region is known for. Too bad he missed out on the tripe. HUGE portions. Service was good too. Go for the starters, specifically the octopus and the shrimp and err on the lighter side for entrees. Email for reservations!

Walking the streets of Gaia can be a little intimidating--there are so many restaurants along the river, it's hard to know where to stop! But this place truly surprised me. The bustling outdoor seating, filled with locals and tourists alike, created such a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The portions were generous, and everything was incredibly filling. The cod fritters were my favorite--we ordered three since they come one per serving, and they were delicious! But the steak was definitely the star of the meal. The entire platter was such a steal, and the steak was cooked perfectly. A lively atmosphere, generous portions, great value, and delicious food--definitely worth stopping here when exploring Gaia!

The wait was quick, and we were seated promptly. We started with appetizers, including the delightful traditional cheese paired with sweet pumpkin jam and walnuts, and Portobello mushrooms stuffed with tangy cheese. We finished the meal with a decadent salted caramel cookie cake. Tempero D' Maria offered a delicious meal and an unforgettable view. It was easily one of my favorite restaurants in Gaia!

No real plans, no reservations, no guilt, and no time constraints when it came to meals (well, except breakfast...which was included at our hotel). Our first night in Porto, after an amazing guided tour with some very cool sites and some delicious food stops for some sweet treats, both our guide and front desk person recommended VINHAS D'ALHO down by the river for dinner (a reservation would have gotten us outside seating , but that's ok...). Wifey had an amazing mushroom risotto and I had Black Linguini with Seafood (mussels, clams and shrimp). We started the meal with some bread and Qieijo de Azeitão cheese - the cheese was a smooth, creamy texture with a hearty flavor that was really delicious. The meals were what we came to expect in Portugal - not too fancy, the flavors of the food took precedence rather than the seasonings, and we walked away just full enough to share a couple desserts and an after dinner drink. I just wish we would have left some of the bread leftover so I could sop up every drop on the dish. I know I don't need to say it, since it's Portugal, but the service was amazing. It was a beautiful evening so we walked along the river after dinner so we didn't fall into a food coma. Man, I miss Portugal.

Exemplary Service, Incredible Modern Cuisine, and an Unforgettable Family Dinner at Tasco!…read more I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience at Tasco. This was our final night in Porto with three generations at the table--my wife, our two daughters, my parents, and myself--and we wanted a special place to celebrate the end of an amazing trip. My wife had walked into their famous neighbor, Muu, the night before to see if she could get us in, but they were completely booked. However, the co-owner of Muu and Tasco couldn't have been more festive or welcoming! He accommodated us by booking a table for our group at Tasco--their sister restaurant right next door--for the following night, and he even did a shot of tequila with my wife to celebrate. Talk about incredible Portuguese hospitality! Traveler Tip: Tasco is co-owned with Muu, literally right next door, and shares some of the same kitchen facilities and culinary staff. If you can't get into one, definitely check the other--you're getting that same exceptional standard of food! We were seated in their fantastic private dining room, which was perfect for our family. Tasco serves elevated modern cuisine designed to be enjoyed family-style. We started with the Cogumelos Mágicos (wild mushrooms) and the Cyber Punk (fresh tuna sashimi)--both were incredible and packed with flavor. For our main courses, we shared the Rib Eye, Black Angus, and Supremo de Robalo (sea bass). Every single dish was cooked to perfection and loved by everyone from the kids to my parents. As impressive as the food was, the service during a chaotic moment truly set this night apart. Mid-dinner, my wife accidentally broke a wine glass right on the table. Before we could even feel embarrassed, our server stepped in with total grace and composure. They cleaned the entire area seamlessly without disrupting the flow of our meal, and upon noticing my wife had a small cut on her finger, they immediately brought out a bandage with genuine care and concern. From the warm tequila-fueled welcome the night before to looking after us so thoughtfully at dinner, the team at Tasco delivered exemplary service from start to finish. If you're visiting Porto and want incredible modern dishes, warm hospitality, and an unforgettable vibe, Tasco is an absolute must-visit!
