To address those of you with negative reviews, finding wedding vendors is very much like finding a significant other. Some just aren't compatible. That does not mean they are bad at what they do. On that note, I could tell immediately after our first meeting with Erin that she was a perfect fit for us. She is honest and amazing at what she does. All I brought her was one photo of a floral arrangement and told her that I liked the color combination. She showed me a few photos of flowers to discuss the textures and colors I liked and disliked. She was completely able to work around my ignorance in the area of flowers and colors. She also was able to read my cute but not girly style. Instantly she went to work designing and creating a vision in her head. She created a proposal and quickly sent it over. Fast forward a few months. We go to have our showing where she set up a mock table centerpiece. We worked through what we liked and disliked and wanted changed and wanted to keep. She was very flexible and made changes on the spot based on our reaction to the sample. Now, wedding day. I arrive at the wedding venue and am handed the most beautiful, unique, exactly my vision bouquet. The flowers were exactly what I pictured and more. Everyone thought they were beautiful and they perfectly complemented the bridesmaid dresses! She created a gorgeous arch for the ceremony as well. As we entered the reception, I was so impressed by the table centerpieces. It was just what I wanted! Beautiful manzanita branches accented by colorful bouquets and hanging tea lights mixed with submerged flowers. She also created a gorgeous branch/flower piece to display the place cards. Even though I ended up going with a different florist (Scarlet Petal) for my wedding, I really wanted to write a review for A Stem Above. In retrospect, we should have gone with them. Going with them would have eliminated a lot of back and forth reviewing all text proposals of floral arrangements and some surprises on the wedding day. For anyone evaluating wedding florists, you'll quickly find there are two schools of thought when it comes to proposals: word/written only proposals and proposals with pictures of similar arrangements. A Stem Above caters to their customers and realizes that pictures on the proposal help clarify what is expected on the wedding day. If you're like me and flowers are a "check the box" item (vs. the focal point) of your wedding, go with A Stem Above. I went through the proposal process with them (Erin?), and they were so nice throughout the process (even after I didn't respond to emails for a while). Though they do huge weddings where flowers are the focal point, they didn't discriminate against my smaller wedding (though they do have some minimums in peak seasons). read more

Where do I even begin?! Erin from A Stem Above was so easy to work with, she accommodated all my needs and was responsive when I needed answers quick. She worked within my budget and revised my contract several times until it was just right. The flowers were to die for! Erin at A Stem Above screwed up my appointment date TWICE. I took it as a red flag and cut my losses. That being said, I find it to be very unprofessional to be unable to manage appointment times, especially considering that everything we discussed was documented in emails, so she could have gone back to double check if there were any questions. The first time, she called me on a date that I didnt have an appointment to ask where I was. When I reminded her of our actual appointment date, she apologized and said she had confused the date. No big deal. But then the second time I had someone in from out of town to go to floral appointments with me. We showed up and buzzed to get in an no one answered. We called a few times, no answer. I later received a message from Erin saying that she had confused the appointment time (again). I can't take a chance that she will confuse my wedding date so I'm not interested. read more

Scratching my head at anything less than a 5 star review for Erin and her team! I had so much fun working with Erin, she (fortunately) got mine and my mother's humor and handled the two of us with grace. I am not your average bride and didn't really have a vision of what I wanted so I needed some hand holding. Erin BLEW ME AWAY with her floral arrangements on the night of my wedding. Going with A Stem Above was the best decision we made throughout our entire wedding planning process! They created our vision beyond our expectations for our July wedding. I told Erin what I was thinking, she suggested some looks through photos, and then ran with it. She set a sample table with the exact flowers and design we wanted before we ever signed with her. I went to A Stem Above for a consultation as I was looking for a floral/event designer for my wedding. Their porfolio looks good and I believe they can do a good job, but we didn't get that far because they were totally flakey. They don't appear to read their emails and, when they did, were slow in responding. We had several miscommunications in those emails - something I hadn't experienced with any other vendor (florist, caterer, cake maker, band, etc etc). Finally, their ineptitude was so frustrating that there was no point in pursuing their services anymore. There are too many event designers in the city to worry about working with someone who doesn't pay attention to detail and is bad about follow-up. read more

Erin did the flowers for my wedding this May. I found her online, contacted via her website, and she pretty much helped me figure out my entire wedding via email correspondence. We only met in person once at a bridal event, but all of our wedding discussions occurred via email. And yet, I felt like Erin was the most communicative florist I spoke with and understood what I wanted the fastest. She was great at sending pictures of what I might like and helping me narrow down my choices, and when I picked up the flowers the day of my wedding, there were zero surprises - everything looked as beautiful as I imagined, even better. She suggested flowers that were in season when I realized the ones I wanted wouldn't be robust enough in May, and was incredibly responsive in her communications. I have to imagine that A Stem Above is the BEST wedding florist in all of Chicago. I was planning my wedding from 2000 miles away and they made the process so easy and convenient. A Stem Above did a great job of meeting our wedding needs. We had a beautiful venue (Salvage One) that just needed some sprucing up and they did a great job of that while sticking with our venue. You know when you sit down with someone and they just "get it"? That was how the consultation with Erin at a Stem above went. It was my first florist meeting, and little did I know the others wouldn't be so amazing, but oh man, was that a fun consult. She had pictures of everything she was explaining and the whole thing was like a really fun brainstorming session. I didn't even know the colors for the wedding when I walked in there, which was a huge problem at other places, but she made a great suggestion that turned out beautifully! When we received her quote, it was lower that the ones we got from places that we didn't feel the same connection to. What also made it stand out is that she included pictures in it so you really felt you knew what you were getting without having to know the names of all the flowers. Cut to the wedding, and the flowers looked amazing! Everything stayed fresh and the tables couldn't have looked better. Erin is AMAZING. She figured out that she was doing a wedding at the same venue the night before mine, and worked out some split costs between me and the other bride. She didn't have to do this, but she went above and beyond right off the bat. What really set Erin apart to me, and unfortunately cannot be said for every wedding vendor, is that she never once tried to upsell me. In fact, she tried to talk me OUT of extra arrangements at the 11th hour because she didn't think we needed them and it would compete with other elements at the venue. That to me is the mark of someone who cares about how my wedding looked, and not just making a buck. I cannot recommend her enough! She is rare. :) read more

Had an appointment, verified the message on my daughter's voicemail, showed up on time after a long day at work and driving up to Hubbard when after arriving NO ONE was in "A Stem Above" for the appointment. We called the telephone number and left a message that we had arrived. We waited 15 minutes with no response. And...my daughter is still waiting for a callback!!! "A Stem Above" NEVER even called her back to attempt to set a new appointment or to apologize. Apparently, "A Stem Above" is NOT the best choice as they do not even show up. Terrible way to do business "A Stem Above"!!! My Rating would be a negative star if given the choice. read more

Similar to what some others have said, Erin was 45 minutes late to our first appointment. We walked up to the door on time and saw someone locking up, he walked away and then came back to see if we were looking for Erin, and we said yes. He let us in and called her, then told us that she was running late at a walk-through and asked if we wanted to stay. Considering she had told me in an earlier email that she already had several requests for our date, we decided to stay and not try to reschedule for a later time. When she finally arrived, she went through our ideas with us - she had great suggestions and showed us gorgeous pictures of weddings she had done in the past. Clearly she is great at what she does, but we were left still feeling uneasy about hiring her because of how she had handled the appointment time and other reviews we had read about unreliability. She sent us a follow up email asking for us to commit within 7 to 10 days. I responded within that window that we would, in fact, like to work with her, but she said that she had already promised the date to another bride. When she came back a couple days later and said the date could still be available, we decided to go another way. All in all, I think Erin is incredibly talented and creates stunning floral design, but we didn't feel comfortable working with her after our experience. read more

We wanted to thank Erin, and team, from A Stem Above for providing our wedding ceremony and reception with beautiful flowers AND for the service they provided throughout the wedding planning process. Without A Stem Above, we could have had a stark and dreary event versus the wedding of our dreams. Erin was immediately responsive when we reached out to her with our budget and "few ideas". She was a true expert from the beginning and helped us build on our inspiration...yet, still keeping us within our price point, colors and a matching feel to our venue. We got married at the Museum Contemporary Art in Chicago, and as it is such a beautiful location on its own, we simply wanted to use florals and candles to help highlight the modern, industrial feel and also keep it feeling intimate and warm. Erin allowed us to interview her in person (many others want to negotiate through email first) and quickly followed-up with the contract right after the meeting (many florists try to build in "extras" in the contract process). She ALSO sent us matching imagery and photos to prove she was on the same page and helped us "see" what she was going to create to align with our thoughts. During this process, she nailed the colors, the feeling of warmth with floating candles, helped us with an outdoor ceremony plan and created a modern "hanging" floral placecard table that had not been done over and over before. It fit the venue and our style perfectly. As we were budget conscious, she also found ways to keep the quality and richness in the decor - such as re-using certain items from the ceremony within the reception and finding flowers that were the same color but more in season than ones that were not. It was so nice to work with someone who was a "solution finder" versus a "calculator pusher". As the event got closer, Erin met with us in person again, confirming at the meeting we were not just another "couple" but made us feel comfortable and secure she remembered what we agreed upon 8 months earlier. Her team's execution was flawless and the photos do not do her design justice. Overall, we highly recommend Erin and A Stem Above for any event, especially for a wedding. As a bride & groom, you want your vision to be followed and a budget to be met simultaneously. There are SO many florists, especially in a city like Chicago, that push their view or budget on to you versus the other way around. Or, let you drive the vision to the point of failed execution. The flowers Erin and her assistant Amy designed for my daughter's wedding were breathtakingly beautiful and we couldn't be happier with both the personal flowers and the romantic atmosphere created by the centerpieces they designed for the reception. I met with other florists and Erin was the only one who provided photos 'for inspiration' as well as descriptions of what we discussed when she sent her proposal. I love flowers, always notice the flowers at weddings, and these were the best I've ever seen. We had a challenging situation as my daughter lives out of town and we had only 4 months to put all the wedding details together. They did a trial centerpiece during my daughter's visit to town and it was exactly what I had requested. However, my daughter wanted to change some flowers and colors and they understood her vision and what we ended up with was beyond what I had imagined. I emailed several times with questions and they were quick to respond and always had great ideas. I also stopped by a couple of times just to look at candles, vases, etc. and they were warm and welcoming. Where do I start! I wish I could give Erin/team 10 stars. I cannot thank them enough for the INCREDIBLE job they did for my January wedding at Ovation (Chicago). I am an analyst by profession and didn't have the design expertise to put my vision into words. I was having trouble with other florists, but when I met with A Stem Above they were able to capture my vision immediately, even with my poor description. They are not only an amazing florist but they are design experts and true artists! They captured every single detail of my vision perfectly and even helped with suggestions to make it that much better. Walking into my venue the day of and seeing it all come together was one of my most favorite memories from that day! Erin had completely transformed the room! With it being the middle of winter in Chicago I wanted it to feel warm and romantic. The mix of the lace runners on the wood tables with lanterns and candle treatment and mixed floral votives and mercury glass it was just amazing. All of my girlfriends were raving about my decor! Not to mention that the bouquets they made were absolutely breathtaking. I couldn't believe how perfect mine was and the succulent bridesmaid bouquets were so much better than I even expected. I loved working with Erin on our wedding flowers. She was the last of 4 florists I met with and knew immediatly afterwards that she was the one to pick. She is very detailed in her questions - asking what things we liked and did not like about certain flowers and showed us tons of pictures of her work to help us come up with a vision of our wedding flowers. She gave us great ideas as well on our linens and how to decorate our King's table. She was also willing to reduce her prices to be comparable to other companies we received proposals from. On our wedding day, we were absolutately blown away at the beauty of our centerpieces. We had two different kinds - one was a candle treatment with lightboxes and the other was a low floral piece. They were absolutely gorgeous and the room looked like it was out of a magazine. We had a showing before we signed with her where she showed us what our low floral piece would look like. We had some concerns that it was a bit too small for the table size, but she convinced us it would be ok. The actual floral piece on our wedding day was much larger than the one she showed us and was soooo beautiful. Erin is truly talented and wonderful to work with!!! read more
