I love learning about history in Alexandria and Manumission provides little-known African-American history in historic Old Town. City of Alexandria Councilman John Chapman owns the tour company so taking the tour is a great way to interact with a local leader as well as support a locally owned business. He takes great care in providing accurate information and sharing the history in a respectful way. The walking pace is slow and steady with stops along the way - small groups are intentional so that we can hear as he speaks (uses a microphone speaker) as well as engage with questions. I liked that the tour is mindful of walking throughout Old Town and the guide is mindful as we are crossing streets and pointing out areas for sitting for those who may need to rest during the tour. I learned so much on the tours and I'm looking forward to booking another tour to learn even more. It is truly a unique experience in Alexandria.

The guide was knowledgeable and responsive to the group's many questions. There are so many stories left untold in our history books and our guide introduced us to early luminaries in the Black community in Alexandria, like doctors, civil rights attorneys, property developers and organizers of churches and social clubs. We even visited a cemetery from the 1800s where freedmen were buried after the war. Standing there, I had such a powerful feeling. These were REAL people, not just faceless characters from a book. Know before you go: This is a small, locally owned and operated business. Don't expect 24/7 operators to take your call. If you are from out of town, it gets hot here in the summer! Our guide had water bottles for us and the bus was air conditioned (not on arctic blast but it was nice). Do expect a caring and personal experience. You'll be glad you went!

But if its a hot or muggy day, the photos of smiling passengers will not be indicative of your red/blue line experience. These buses have no A/C, and if you want to sit al-fresco and its a sunny day, you'll be just as sweaty. Think: "summertime Alabama prison bus experience" and this will meet that expectation.

The guy told us to get on the bus and stay on. It would do the red line, then the blue line. We could then do the evening tour. Okay then. Off we go. Finished the red line, and we're told to get off the bus. What? Last bus is at 4:30.. not what we were told. Not happy. We went on to the evening tour. I'd say it was pretty good. I did enjoy that parts of this tour. Didn't enjoy the "stories" so much. Would have liked more history. We got the bus the next morning and went to Arlington. When we finished we went to the stop, not such great bus timing. Their brochure said buses come every 15 minutes. After an hour of waiting we tried to contact BB to see what was going on? They do not have a phone number that works. There is an email address that stars it will get back to you in 24 hours.., what? We waiting over an hour and gave up for an uber. We did get another email telling us there are delays due to events. This is not okay we when have paid for a 24 hour pass that is not usable. All in all, our 24 hour pass was good for 3 hours. Reason for this? Maybe because only two buses run on Sunday. So unless you have the time to wait two hours for your next bus, it's not worth it! Do not use this service!

When we called, the dispatcher realized that they had mistakenly booked the bus for the next day (An honest mistake based on the comments they put in the invoice however we had agreed on the 13th and had multiple emails stating that). The dispatcher was very helpful in the matter and was able to get us two 30 person buses to our location 2 hours after our scheduled departure so that the day was not completely ruined and we appreciated that. That alone would not have garnered a negative review from me, I get it, mistakes happen; but how you respond to those mistakes is what matters. So when I called during the week to hopefully get some form of reim or at the very least an official apology for the mistake, I was ignored! Five texts left on 'read', multiple calls not returned, multiple emails not replied to. Not once did I yell at anyone or give anyone a hard time, I simply stated that we did not receive the service that we paid for and I was hoping for some sort of refund or compensation for the trouble. Complete radio silence from the company. I don't understand what I did to earn such a disrespectful unprofessional (non) response. Be cautious to anyone considering this company, they use Zelle for their transactions and so when they make a mistake you have no way to get your money back and they refuse to take accountability for their mistakes.

I called and emailed about 3 times each and never received any communication. The day of our tour we arrived at the meeting location (Navy Memorial) and our driver was early waiting for us. There was only one other couple on the tour with us so there were plenty of seats available. Our driver Kev explained our locations that we would visit and drive by and stated that we would be dropped off at the African American History Museum. Our tour began and Kev was very informative on the history of the beautiful colonial houses explaining who lived where etc. Our first stop where we could get out for pictures was the Capitol. Kev explained that at each stop we would have about 15 minutes to explore and he gave us a meeting spot to return to. Well we returned a little early and Kev was waiting and I inquired about how long he had been doing this tour and sarcastically he replied " Today is my first day". I was thrown back by his answer and by then the other couple walked up and it was time for the next stop. The couple on the tour with us inquired if we felt that Kev was sarcastic because they stated to us that he was very short and sarcastic with them earlier in the morning. As time goes by we arrived at Frederick Douglas home and as we were outside waiting for the tour to begin Kev approached me and began to talk. I was shocked because he had been short most of the morning. We explained that we were on vacation from California and had visited family in the area. Once he heard that he began giving us suggestions on where to go visit and directions. I just assumed he was having a bad morning which doesn't justify his sarcasm but I let it go. I will definitely suggest taking this tour because there is so much history to hear. I would also ask that Kev clean the bus because the seats were a little dirty but otherwise. Great tour!
