It was fantastic... Went out fishing with Captain Keith, my buddy and his two teenage boys. Captain Keith has a lot of fun. His patience and ability to teach are great. The boys had a great time and with his help we were mooching in no time. We were also catching lots of fish, Kings, Pinks, and Silvers. The weather was beautiful. Super great experience wrapping up the summer. First of all, the booking process went incredibly smoothly. Whoever was on the phone answered all questions. They also gave a number to call/text for followup questions. When I texted about increasing our party size from 4 to 6 the response was very quick and they were fast to accommodate. The parking/driving directions were very helpful for the day of and Captain Andrew pulled up to the marina a few minutes before the scheduled 6am departure time. He went over licenses, salmon regulations, where to sit and where to store items. Our group included several fishing enthusiasts, but had all never gone salt water fishing. Capt. Andrew was informative and explained gear, electronics, rigs, and the boat to us curious youngings. When we got to the fishing, Capt. Andrew was outstanding. We definitely kept him busy with 6 people. He moved around tying leaders, hooking bait, untangling lines, degaffing sharks, and netting salmon. ON top of being a fantastic worker, Capt. Andrew was a great man to banter and chat with. One of the main selling points that A Spot Tail pushes is mooching vs trolling, and it is clear why. Mooching is hands-on, engaging, and personalized. Each person has a rod and reels their own fish. There were other charters on the water with us who were trolling. I didn't think it would be possible to look bored on a $$ fishing charter. On our 6 hours trip, there were minimal 'slow' moments. Either we were speeding across the Sound or actively fishing. Altogether landed 5 coho and 1 chinook. Unfortunately didn't land one myself but, hey, that's fishing. Must have caught a dozen sharks though! Would recommend to anyone looking to fish in Seattle and if I'm ever in the area again, wouldn't hesitate to book again. read more

I think this was the exact moment both myself and Captain Keith knew it was going to be a good day. A couple friends and I charted a salmon trip in August and had an absolute blast. On the fishing: We ended up bringing home 3 fish. Captain Keith teaches a very active fishing style that is fun and engaging. He does all the hard work for you and leaves you to do the fun stuff. I want to mention here thay the Captain was super upfront about how he (obviously) couldn't promise any catches but he'd do his best to give us a shot. I always appreciated that he wasn't trying to hype us up. On the experience: Last summer in Seattle we had to deal with smoke from several very large forest fires on the west coast. The morning we went out was one of the first clear days in months. It was a beautiful Seattle morning. We showed up on time with a cooler of beers, sandwiches and a can-do attitude. We caught a few fish, came home and grilled them up with some Carne asada and enjoyed one of those awesome summer sunsets on the roof. The charter played a large part in what would come to be a very memorable day. On the captain: As a customer I think there's a risk you take when you charter a boat like this. That risk is the captain. The assessment you are desperately trying to make on the phone (before you get on the boat) is "just how much of a sailor is this guy?" Too much and the captain can make you a little uncomfortable. Not enough and you're not really put in a position succeed and the experience is poor. I'm happy to report that Captain Keith is one of those captains who has spent his share of time on the water but has maintained an extremely approachable personality. He was super easy to chat with, offering NUMEROUS resteraunt recommendations (I live in Belltown and he was sure to tease me that i gotta get out more -- he was 100% right), making solid jokes and giving me the opportunity to find out that, yes, I can pound a man-can of PBR and a PB&J before we start our next run. Sadly the captain told me he's handing off most of the work to his second in command (first mate?) but if he reads this I want him to know that he gave my friends and I very special, memorable day. Highly recommended by a friend, and surpassed every expectation! Had a great time, couldn't have asked for a better salmon fishing experience! I had never been salmon fishing before, and Captain Keith put us right on the fish. Loved the feel of the rod/reel combos we were provided (Shimano Tekota w/line counter, and G.Loomis rods), perfect for mooching the schools of baitfish on the sonar. I've done my share of both freshwater and ocean fishing, but after hooking into 6 nice king salmon (1 broke off) between 15-20 lbs in 5 hours I might have set the bar a little high. Couldn't have done it without the captain's constant updates regarding fish depth, and his ability to quickly replace lost bait and jigs, and keep everyone fishing. Loved every minute! This was an amazing fishing experience that I'd recommend to anyone visiting Seattle. The boat was very clean and all the gear is supplied for you and very nice gear too! Captain Andrew went above and beyond for us. Every caught fish or every time we lost bait or a hook he was right there to fix everything and get us back out fishing right away. We even witnessed a guy flip in his kayak into freezing water and captain Andrew pulled him out of the water and brought him back to shore. Just another example that's he's a great guy! Just back yesterday from a fantastic morning out on the Sound with Captain Keith of Spot Tail. We got exactly what we wanted from our 6 hour trip. I had along my 21 year son and 2 teenagers (aged 20 and 16) visiting from Delaware who wanted to go salmon fishing (mooching, NOT trolling). We had the best time even though we only caught sharks, flounders and some chinook that had to be thrown back. Our Captain was great. The boat is clean and comfortable. He was responsive, punctual, prepared and actively creating fishing opportunities the entire time. He was fun, funny, knowledgeable, positive, kind. He is a true fisherman who loves fishing, sharing it with others and one who can tune his game to virtually all levels of fishing competence. One last note (and this may be irrelevant to some reading this review but it matters a great deal to me): I'm a 51 year old woman. I researched and booked this excursion without the help of anyone and I never felt uncomfortable, mocked or dismissed as a female at any point in the entire transaction. Captain Keith was great. Our guide Andrew was excellent! Our foursome had a great time on the sound and saw some mooching action. Unfortunately the salmon that we did catch were not legal for us to keep, that is how it goes. It is good that they do everything by the books. It was a great idea to take the six hour trip because four hours would not have left us enough time to change spots and try other areas.
