Oooo baby. This is an absolutely teeny tiny little restaurant that you'd probably walk past if you didn't know it existed. I got there a little before the lunch special started so I wasn't able to get it (soup, sandwich, drink for 7.5 euro??) but I got the prosciutto, Brie, and mango sandwich and it was so perfect I can't imagine adding soup would've made my life better. I took a risk and got this because I'm not usually a sweet and salty gal nor do (did??) I believe that fruit belongs on sandwiches by my goodness. The creaminess of the Brie and the sweet and tanginess of the mango made this sandwich truly delectable. Add in the chewy yet crunchy bread? Forget it. This sandwich was delicious, the vino verde was 2.5 euros, and I left feeling refreshed and ready for another Porto adventure. Not related but there were only women working. The waitress and the two chefs were women and that's badass to me (even if it was just a coincidence).

Amazing, tucked away gem with the most delicious and unique tasting sandwiches. Cozy vibes, tight but this is a must try place if there is a seat available.

I lucked out and caught them at a moment there was no line and a table available. The line quickly formed and it's well worth the wait. They are cash only so bring cash with you for lunch. The lunch special is 11 euro and I had soup, sandwich and a drink for the cost. Staff is friendly and although busy does an amazing job. Food was delicious. It's small inside but has a cozy feel.

This little hole-in-the-wall is my favorite place in Porto. It's tiny, but so charming! Definitely worth the wait for a place to sit inside. Picture strings of origami birds hung on the wall, fairy lights, and wooden paneled walls. The owner is quick on her feet, efficient, and polite. We went two separate times. The first time, we ordered a Vitória sandwich to-go the first time (prosciutto, brie, and mango) and I devoured it before I even thought about taking a photo. The second time, we dined in and ordered the fried potatoes and the lunch special: a Ribeira salad, vegetable soup, and mint ginger lemonade. My boyfriend didn't like the lemonade as he said it wasn't sweet enough, but I thought that the more bitter taste paired well with the salad. Everything is super fresh and a gorgeous, vibrant mix of colors. It felt so authentic and local, unlike some of the more touristy places we visited previously.

Super small place. Really yummy sandwiches. Cash only. Would go back for sure. Lots of vegetarian options.

We just arrived to Porto and were looking for an authentic and unique place to have lunch. We found it!!! Tiny place offering personal service, delicious fresh dishes, local beer and local wine.

What a little gem, only sits about 20 people but sure worth the wait, quick to order and it didn't take long to deliver the goods, super light and fresh great break from all the meats, it's good to see these two young ladies making such a difference in the cuisine culture of Porto and really highlighting the local fresh ingredients.

I would come back to Porto for a layover just so I could have the Sâo Joáo sandwich again. It comes with tomato, peppers, house-made salsa, and sardines, all enclosed in freshly baked bread. After days of eating heavy meats and seafood, this was an extremely refreshing break. I also tried our dad's Vitória sandwich, which came with smoked ham, brie, and mango, and was just as delicious. Their soup of the day when we visited was curry leek, and it was so good that I almost asked for the recipe. Each sandwich cost 6.50 euros at the time of writing, and a weekday lunch special lets you have a soup and sandwich for 9.00 euros.

I typically never crave sandwiches (except for banh mi), but this sandwich spot was a hidden gem! I ordered the sardines sandwich and everything about it was so fresh - from the bread which was super soft to the sardines, sauce, and all the veggies inside. We also got the soup of the day which was a carrot and beet soup and it was a perfect balance of flavors. I saw someone post below about the mango and Brie sandwich - didn't see that on the menu but might have to go back for it to double check!

Such an awesome spot! It's super tiny and cash only. One woman was serving everyone (and I think only two women were making sandwiches). We loved our sandwiches. I had the vitória with mango (prosciutto and Brie) and it was really good! Check this place out if you can.

A must-stop lunch spot as you wander your way through Porto. Absolutely incredible sandwiches. Don't miss the ham, brie and date combo. The sardine sammy was also so delicious and light. The bread is airy yet crispy. Try some of the local Portuguese beers while you're at it. Cash only. Worth being late for your train. 1000/10 stars.

Oh. My. Goodness. First off, the food is freaking awesome! I got a smoked ham (prosciutto), Brie, and mango sandwich and zero regrets! The bread was crunchy on the outside but moist on the inside. My husband got the same sandwich except he had dates instead of mango and it was just as good. We also had the tomato, cheese, and olive appetizer, which was delicious. On a side note: it's a super small restaurant and the tables are right next to each other but totally worth the claustrophobia.

The cheese, olive and tomato appetizer. Awesome.
    Jason L.

Teeny, tiny, claustrophobic place but worth sardine-ing yourself. Sandwiches served on fresh, crunchy multigrain bread with top notch ingredients. We had: - cheese, olive and tomato appetizer - the Vitoria; prosciutto, brie and mango sandwich - the D. Luis; prosciutto, brie and dates sandwich All were delicious. Oh, and they make a mean mojito too. CASH ONLY.

I also had the place next door to this place on my list, but when we got there, the line to get in was basically out the door and around the corner, so I crossed them off and went here, leaving an opening for us to go somewhere else. Then the next morning, I discovered, Casa Guedes had just recently opened a second location in Vila Nova de Gaia, down the street from where we were staying, with the same name and menu and prices and everything, so I was there for dinner the next day too. Having now been to both, I can say the quality of the food was of pretty similar quality at both locations, so from here on, the rest of this review is going to be of food I had at either location. Great service at both, too, though their offshoot, at least at the time, was much less busy than this location, but the service was great anyway, regardless of them being busy. Between the two locations, and between two people sharing, we tried: A green soup that was, as I wrote in my notes, "omg". Croquettes that were also, again from my notes from January, "omg". A pernil with cheese sandwich I also just wrote down "omg" to, lol. A francesinha that was a *bit* understated compared to the one I'd had the previous day, but had, I wrote down, "excellent sauce". (I also wrote down that dipping the pernil with cheese sandwich *into* the sauce from the francesinha equaled, quote myself, "super omg".) A pork rissol with onion and port that I called "great but not amazing" (i.e. compared to everything else.) A sandwich with "soft cow cheese" (so... brie) and arugula that I wrote down as "excellent and a half" :D. And of course, being me, a note that, on request, they also had, at least as of January, great hot pepper oil (always a huge bonus.) Also had a solid pork spritz, and of course, port by itself (when in Rome, or in this case, Port), as well as a beer, cause the beer was super cheap. Just wish Superbock were a better beer (I also wrote that in my notes, specifically.) Sort of funny that their *cocktail* cocktails were fairly expensive, but that didn't matter, since their port prices, including port cocktails, i.e. spritzes, were very reasonably priced. Would definitely come back here if I were back in Porto, which I wish I were right now, lol.

The best bifana sandwich in town…read more Conga in Porto is renowned for their bifana sandwich. This is a classic pork sandwich with thin slices of marinated pork served in warm Portuguese roll bread. This introductory dine-in meal was coincidentally the most memorable meal of our trip. We came on a weekday for lunch and was seated shortly on their busy 2nd floor interior. The shredded pork slices were so tender and flavorful having been simmered to soak up all of the spice seasoning the marinade in the large pan for staff to pose with at the storefront. You can watch as the staff skewer out the meat in between the bread. The soft pillowy papo seco bread melted with the meat and was dunked in the spicy pork sauce for extra flavour. We paired this bifana sandwich (3.60 EUR) with their refreshing iced tea and a classic papas stew (3.50 EUR). The stew mixed minced pork & chicken in cornmeal thickened with pork blood. The seasoning made this surprisingly appetizing without much gamey flavour. Our only regret was not ordering more bifana sandwich instead while assuming other shops could be comparable. Simply put, this bifana sandwich was so savoury and none of the other famous shops we visited later ended up coming close. In fact even a Porto local whom we bumped into at a famous bifana sandwich spot in Lisbon flat out said Conga was better and she was right. You're not here for the service but a quick tasty bite. Skip it or hit it? Conga is worth the hype and you have to dine-in or takeout this sandwich!

We saw the two waiters come to the street and picked up a few bags of rolls that was delivered and likely for their sandwiches they planned on serving for the day. Word about this must be going around since besides me and my wife, there were 2 other group of people waiting for them to open. Pregar is definitely a small restaurant with only 8 tables inside and 4 tables outside. Their menu was separated by language and our waitress opened it on the English menu. My wife just had soup and I ordered the Serra (Portuguese steak with cheese) on a roll. The price was just for the burger and so I added the fries which came on a dipping side (they had sweet chili, horse radish mayo, ketchup) just to name a few. We actually had the sweet chili and later the horse radish mayo to try. So the steak sandwich I had was Medium (they ask how you want it cooked and went with how the Portuguese like their steaks.) It was a simple no frills sandwich. Just steak. Melted cheese on a roll. The bread was soft and complimented the meat in a 1-1 ratio which I like. Sometimes with a burger, you have more bread with a small burger in the middle. The Serra was 12 euro and thought that was a fair price for a steak sandwich. Overall, I'd give the Serra 4 stars. Service was wonderful and our waitress was attentive and helpful with her suggestions on the steak sandwich to go with. 5 stars. Overall, it was a great lunch and we enjoyed being one of the first ones to dine that day. By the time we were about to finish, more patrons were coming in to eat. Definitely a place If you happen to be near Pregar, I would recommend to try.

Its nearest cousin is the Croque Madame only more gluttonous with multiple kinds of meat and an excess of melted cheese. Bourdain went to O Afonso to try his first Francesinha when he visited Porto. However, current consensus motivated us to come here after we watched more recent YouTube travel videos from Jamie Oliver and others. This looked like a more classic, retro-style diner like Mel's Drive-In, but there was no mistaking what everyone was ordering here whether they were tourists or locals. Tables were pretty snug, but we managed to squeeze ourselves in against the wall. We knew we had to get the 13,2€ Francesinha Santiago because it was the classic rendition (Photo 8). Fortunately they allowed us to share an order because our tablemates let us know other places around town don't allow you to do that. It was quite a sight with the fried egg on top of a monstrous sandwich covered by multiple, overlapping slices of a Portuguese cheese called queijo flamengo. The sandwich itself consisted of two thick slices of white bread toasted to golden brown. Inside was Portuguese wet-cured ham, bologna, grilled sirloin steak, fresh sausage, linguiça, and mortadella. It was all doused with their house francesinha sauce made of beef gravy, tomato paste, onion, garlic, piri piri chiles, beer, brandy, and port wine. A pile of fries surrounded the sandwich (Photo 10). Wow, I just spent two paragraphs describing the francesinha and didn't mention whether I liked it or not. I did - but I also realized it was one-and-done for me. We managed to have a couple of the 2,7€ bowls of soup. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.
