It was still early and the order was not ready and was ready in a few minutes after. The tray full of straight out the fryer Wadas and freshly tempered dhoklas. Surprisingly the dhoklas were vegan (made without yogurt or buttermilk) Couldn't resist picking up one Wada and splitting into quarters for us to taste them in the car right there. The Wadas hit and perfectly spiced for an Indian taste buds. The outer chickpea flour cover with spiced potatoes inside. The spice also a hint of sweetness that speaks to the Gujarati style of spicing thing you. The dhoklas when tasted at home were spicy even for an Indian taste buds and the tempering had too much oil (way too much). Normally the dhoklas are not spicy at all, but I think the chillis in the tempering were spicy and the dhoklas turned out way too spicy for many in the family (except me, of course). But the over greasiness killed the experience for me. Most of the pieces dripped in oil.

ivey's is a family-owned restaurant that's been around for 12 years. the exterior and interior are…read moredistinctly yellow, green, and black, asserting that the restaurant is wholly jamaican. there are boxes and an old fridge lying around close to the seating area, and while this may not be aesthetic, i feel like it adds so much to the homey atmosphere. their relatively small menu consists of plenty of jamaican favourites, such as curry chicken, jerk chicken, ox tail, and ackee and saltfish. i opted for the curry chicken special, which was a large serving of food (for me) at an unbeatable $6.50 price tag. the dish is simple - a heap of rice and peas topped with a hearty serving of their curry chicken. the curry was pretty simple in flavour - pieces of tender bone-in chicken with potatoes and bell peppers bathing in a yellow curry-powder-dominant gravy - but went perfectly with the rice and peas. the curry isn't spicy, but it only takes a few drops of their delicious, potent hot sauce (scotch bonnet i believe) to turn up the heat. the best (worst?) part about the hot sauce is that it has a bit of sweetness to it, which made me want more and more, even though it was quickly ripping my palate to shreds. one thing i'd like to note is that the friendly lady working here came to my table and served a placemat and silverware before bringing my food. this is something you won't see at most restaurants, but i don't think anything made me feel more at home than this. ivey's builds the case that family-owned restaurants are better than any new and hip openings. these are the places i want to eat at all the time, and i'll forever support these kinds of places

I ventured into Milton because my best friend lives there and I had a date with her for a dinner…read moreand a movie. She picked this one because of the stars on yelp. I glanced at the reviews before heading there. The parking is street or across the street at the Coffee Culture, annoying to have to climb over snow banks afterwards. But that's neither here nor there... We arrive and the restaurant is empty, although it was around 8pm when we came. We were headed to the counter to place an order, but no huge menu on the wall or on the counter to be seen. Then the chef/owner/waiter came out from the kitchen and asked if we wanted a table for two? Puzzled, we said yes and he brought out 2 menus and seated us at the table in front of the counter. While we were settling in he offers us the steak or salmon ?!?!? At this point I was still excited because I was starving, we ordered a chicken plate to share, and added a babaganoush and an extra greek salad (at the waiter's insistence). I went to the restroom and came back and there was a bottle of water, and a glass of water on our table. I asked my friend about it and she told me that he had brought 2 bottles of water to the table first and when she asked if it was extra, he said yes. She then informed him she'd be fine with just tap water please. At which point he said it's only $1. This is horrible not only because no restaurant should ever try to force something the customer didn't order but then to basically call her cheap??? He eventually came back and dropped off 1 glass of water for her but my bottle is what i returned to. I realize a lot of take out places or fast-food restaurants don't give free water, and only sell bottled water. But this is the first time I've seen a dine-in place do this. It's like you need to decide whether you're fast food or fine dining... Another example is while we were waiting for our food, the chef was cooking in the front of house and was banging the spatula against the silver cooking top and made so much noise, it was as if we were in a normal take out schwarma place. If that was the case, then why was our bill $28 and we split a meal. The meal was under- whelming. The babaganoush had no flavor but oil, the greek salad tasted like water, the pita bread was the kind from the grocery store and there was way too much rice compared to chicken. The hot sauce was the only memorable part for me. When we were paying I was gathering my things when my best friend was paying so I didn't get to see the bill, but i know he charged us $1.20 for the water, and a 5 or 6 dollars for a salad the same size as what came with the meal. As a side note: i try not to drink bottled water because of the fluoride. The whole time we were there, 2 customers came in, both to pick up take out. I think this restaurant needs to re-evaluate what kind of restaurant they are running. Pick one and stick to it: fast-food or fine dine in.I paid $14 for something I would have paid less for anywhere else. 1 hit 1 miss in Milton so far!

After devouring my chicken roti here, I was like...oh crap. I forgot to take a picture! But…read moreeveryone knows what a roti looks like anyway. The stuff here doesn't really look that out of the ordinary presentation wise, but the roti was certainly one of the best I've ever had. I had a mini chicken roti which was a good size for lunch, but just based on how much I enjoyed it, I wish I opted for the full size. The flat bread itself was just the right texture and didn't taste all "steamed up" from sitting around all day. It came with a generous portion of chicken, which was intensely flavoured (spicy, but not "DYING HOT" spicy... just perfect!!); you also get some home-made hot sauce mixture (glad I decided to try some - it was a perfect complement to the roti). There's also some daily specials towards the end of the week like curry, jerk chicken etc...but I couldn't resist the roti after seeing the previous person before me get it. It just looked so juicy and appetizing, and I'm super glad I got it. I wish I had room to try the Jamaican patties as well. Their menu here is not very extensive, but seriously, get a roti, can't go wrong. :P On a side note: there isn't much seating here, just what are essentially two picnic tables! But most people seem to take their stuff "to go". :) If the river is nice, there's some outdoor seating close to the river, or you can just take it down to the river and enjoy the scenery!
