**BED BUG ALERT**…read more okay so you now how when you go to a hotel the sheets usually are clean, new and matching? Well that's not how they do it at the Spenard. the sheets were floral, solid, mismatched and looked about 15 years old. That I was going to grin and bear. The ciggerate burns and rips in the comforter I was going to grin and bear. The dangling lightbulb instead of a normal lamp I was going to just turn a blind eye to. The old microwave on a foldout and the holes in the bathroom door I was looking past. The "Adults Only" store right next door was difficult to look past, but hey it was just going to be one night and i'd find somewhere else tomorrow, right? So now to the bed bug discovery...I was sitting up in the bed at about 1AM - unwilling to bring myself to lay in the sheets. I was sitting for only ten minutes in the light of the room till a bug comes scampering across my shoulder...I tried to capture it on a piece of paper and right when it hit the paper it moved at an unprecidented speed - so i squished it. I thought it might be a tick but I wasn't sure. I looked up bed bugs on my phone and was horrified to find out that it was infact a bed bug. When I showed the evidence to the owner/employee she said, "Oooooh, that's a BIG ONE!!" I got the heck out of there and found the most wonderful hotel down the street - Eagle...something was in the title. I will definitely go back to that one. Things you need to know about bed bugs: 1:they only feast on human and animal blood. 2:They can survive up to a year without eating. 3:They usually onl come out in the dark but in some cases (like mine) can be seen in the light. 4: You can only be sure you have an infestation if you physically see one. 5:They are nearly impossible to get rid of - exterminators even have problems with them. 6:you will likely bring them home with you if you encounter them. 7:They come out in the hundreds in the night and eat their sleeping victims like a gift from hell.

However, there are a couple of improvement points. There was no housekeeping offered during our stay, so it was unclear how to get new towels or how to remove trash. Additionally, the entry system confuses a lot of people at first (ourselves included). This leads to incessant doorbell ringing and beeping noises, despite the fact that there is not a staff member on duty to let anyone in. Also, there were times where the front door was just left open because it is a bit hard to close and there is no staff member to check these things. If you are looking to focus on the activities you do in Alaska as opposed to just your stay, this may be a good option .

It is clear she goes above and beyond in all aspects of the business. She gave us a tour of the house the rooms are clean and comfortable. The decor is beautiful. It feels like home. I would definitely recommend it for a short or long term stay. Now back to the breakfast... you get to choose what you want each morning from an extensive menu. There was fruit, homemade bread, jams and bacon available in addition to the meal. The lattes were outstanding.

Unfortunately didn't have time to try the breakfast though. Checking in was really easy and seamless. The woman who checked me in also checked me out and she was great! Super kind and welcoming. A week or so after, I called the hotel to get a receipt sent to my email and they were able to get it sent right away. The room itself was great. Super clean, lots of towels, great water pressure. My one gripe would be that it was a little cold, even with the temperature turned up. WiFi is pretty fast and the bathtub is huge lol. Would stay here again if I'm ever in the area.

We had such a hit or miss experience with Dimond Center Hotel during our stay in June 2024…read more Housekeeping - since we arrived after midnight, I really didn't need housekeeping our first morning just hours later so I advised the front desk who put a notation. Housekeeping still came. The second day, after I left the room at 9am, I put up the sign for service and housekeeping never come. It may be due to the fact that the hanger for please make up the room is the same color as please do not disturb. Having different colors on each side may be easier for housekeeping to differentiate. Water - We received a note under our door that they were turning water off for 2 hours but didn't specify the date or approximate time. We thought it was that night so we filled up the tub so we can flush the toilet. It wasn't turned off during the night so we assumed it would be during the day so decided to stay out most of the next day returning after lunch to check. When we returned after dinner at 9pm in hopes of using their tub, we found another note under the door that they were shutting it off from 11pm-1am, preventing us from soaking in that tub but only able to take a quick shower. It would be great if they gave us a time frame with our original note the night before. But everything wasn't a miss at this hotel. The breakfast was good and staff friendly and attentive to ensure the food was filled and tables cleaned. It was great that the shuttle ran into Downtown and not just the airport, so we didn't have to take the bus to and from downtown until we got a car. But overall, it was underwhelming considering we paid the most here out of our three accommodations in Alaska.

I chose to stay at a BnB instead of a hotel for recovery; mostly because of an intimate setting instead of a busy hotel. They had hosted others for surgery and knew a lot about the schedules, the recovery of others and calmed a fear or two. The breakfasts were over the top with fruit, cereal and hot breakfasts. There was always tea and coffee available. They were helpful, provided a few rides to the surgery center, played cards with me, and had great conversations! Thank you Jim and April! I plan to be back to see you soon and stay whenever we have a need to stay in Anchorage!!

The few bars, shops, and restaurants we went to were all nice with happy and helpful staff. The only downside is that everything in the hotel, including the bars closes early. The hotel grounds are beautifully done. The Nordic Day Spa is also a must! It was the most relaxing day of our trip and the hydrotherapy experience was one-of-a-kind! The fed and drinks at the bistro were amazing, flavorful, and packed with all the goods. The locker rooms were clean and well-kept. I felt like a million bucks while staying here and experiencing this beautiful resort!

So far, it's a disaster: In room thermostat control does…read morenot go beyond 71. Tried to call front desk, calls get disconnected after minutes of ringing. Tried to call again in hotel phone, 45 minutes without answer. Called maint to the room, took over 10 minutes, maint guy showed up, and said "Something IS wrong"...not a good sign. We are told to call the front desk to change room temperatures...except no one answers the call! What a brilliant concept! ===========*=* Mick came down, told the front desk and us that it is now working, we went up to the room, it is again not working. Mick looked at the room thermostat panel and said "you can just press here (up/down arrow for temperature control) ... not sure why it's not working" So the 'secret method' the front desk mentioned is...press the buttons on the wall thermostat? ------------------ Another 20 minutes, and they can't find a room where the in-room thermostat control is working? I never knew this is the Taj Mahal where it will take days to go through the rooms ? ------------- For a place that is understaffed, they sure got securities available to intimidate customers ---------- Another update: director of rooms stopped by, because the person at the front desk Ozzie (?) does not have authority to do anything. Of course, she isn't happy with the fact that she has to come in her time off to handle a situation that took more than 2 hours that Ozzie can't handle. She said Ozzie said he gave us several options of different rooms, while in reality, Ozzie had only sent us back to the same room with the defective heating (507). Hard to deal with someone in the 'hospitality business that lies. Ozzie mentioned during this of an upgrade, but never actually offered an upgrade to us. Quite a pity they have to rely on the word of a dishonest employee over that of a customer and actions of their own maintenance crew. --------- This place is sad when they can't staff the hotel properly, yet have plenty of security around to keep an eye on us. Perhaps go check on the room for Ozzie would've been the better use of their time

House of Jade works with NOLS with transport and providing the best accomadations to get your ready for your expedition. There are rooms set for NOLS students and rooms set for couples. The house remains quiet through out the day and night. Even when people are walking around, I could not hear them from my room. In the morning fresh coffee is brewed and tingles your senses. Great way to get you moving! Breakfast is always something speciel. Homemade granola with yogurt. Fresh fruit. Juice. Teas. The cooked prepared breakfast was so yummy! The last morning I stayed they had reindeer sausage and flap jacks. I could not put my fork and knife down, it was so good! Even during the day they have cookies out for the guests. On the side of the house outside there's a little fireplace. The back deck is nice to sit in the morning with your first cup of coffee. The folks are just as friendly!!
