I've finally made it down to Granville Island to check out A Bread Affair! I wanted to try their Earl Grey Milk Tea Kouign Amann but it was all sold out so I decided to try the coconut black sesame & nouveau nutella kouign amann instead. I've never had a kouign amann before, so I was curious how they tasted. They were like a mix between a sticky bun and sugared croissant which had a crispy and sticky exterior and a buttery and flakey interior. The hazelnut chocolate was my favourite between the two. I love how rich and thick the hazelnut chocolate was! The coconut black sesame was also delicious and you could definitely taste the coconut but I was looking for more of a black sesame paste filling instead of black sesame sprinkles on top based on the name of the pastry. The Apple Cheddar Walnut Galette is the perfect combination of sweet and savory! The flavor may sound a little weird but the apple and cheddar actually complimented well with each other. Whenever I'm in Canada, my first stop of the day is usually at a Tim Hortons. However, I missed it on the way over here and was too lazy to make a U-turn. We just decided to have one of the many options on Granville Island. While there are many options in the public market there, I decided to go to A Bread Affair. The selection of desserts brought me in, but I ended up only getting sandwiches. I went with the Sicilian, French Ham and Havarti, and Turkey In A Dress. I'm a big fan of basil, so the Sicilian was a winner for me (although, there's never enough basil in everything I eat with it). But, since we went on Thanksgiving (USA), I also tried the Turkey In A Dress, which had turkey and stuffing on a cranberry loaf. Better than I expected. Like I said, the desserts looked good, but I didn't get any. Maybe next time. While the building is big, most of it was the kitchen. There isn't any seating inside, but there is a big area right outside the door. Prices were reasonable as the sandwiches were about $9.5 CAD (about $7.25 USD). If you like ALMOND CROISSANTS then this is definitely a place to hit up to get your fill! A Bread Affair has great almond croissants - that is my go-to every time. I appreciate how it is not super sweet and they even have a version that is "Chocolate Almond Croissant" which is the best of both a pain au chocolat and a almond croissant that is worth trying! Their staff are kind and welcoming - the person who served us was really passionate and gave us great recommendations! :) Because of COVID, there is a line that goes out the door and they ensure there is never more than 4 visitors inside at a time. This bakery was at the top of many lists I researched about what to do in Granville Island and it did not disappoint! It's a small shop located centrally at the square across from the public market. 4 customers in the store max. I got the double baked almond croissant for $5.25 and the bourbon butter tart for $4.20. Both were delicious! I really enjoyed the tart pastry of the butter tart and the insides were runny which I liked. You could really taste the bourbon flavour. The almond croissant was my favourite though. So soft and crispy and fluffy at the same time and really packed a well balanced almond punch. I would totally recommend grabbing a pastry from here and sitting outside and enjoying the buskers play live music. Parking will be street metered parking. They also take card and sell other premade sandwiches on-site. read more

08/19/19: My boyfriend got the chocolate croissant and it was the saddest thing ever. It looked flakey, buttery, and delicious, however when we bit into it there was literally only small smears of chocolate. It was so sad like someone forgot to put all the chocolate in. I would much rather have preferred the chocolate croissants from Trader Joe's. I could not believe that it was considered chocolate. I got the butter maple tart because it caught my eye as something "Canadian." It was way too sweet for me, but interesting taste and nothing like I have had before. It had a buttery thick crust filled with raisin/maple filling. I think I would have enjoyed both items more if they had an option to heat the pastries. read more

Double baked pistachio croissant is the bomb digity! I've never been to a bakery that serves pistachio croissants so I knew that was the one I had to try when my eyes fell on it. The lady told me they also have a double baked chocolate pistachio croissant but unfortunately it wasn't available at that moment. The pistachio scent is extremely fragrant. That's the first thing I noticed upon opening the paper bag holding my pistachio croissant. A few seconds later I was crunching down on layers and layers of crispy buttery goodness (the croissant portion) before I tasted the slightly sweet pistachio paste sandwiched in the middle of my heavenly croissant. Wow. Soooo good. Unfortunately I only had enough stomach space for the pistachio croissant, but I also got to sample the lemon cream cheese scone and that was delicious as well. They also have a wide variety of artisan breads that look amazing. I wished they sold Demi-loaves or rolls as it would allow customers to try more bread varieties before committing to one large loaf, or more samples. Nevertheless, highly recommend for anyone visiting Granville Island, especially the double baked croissants! You won't regret it! read more

I'm an admitted carboholic and totally (and unabashedly) addicted to breads and pastries, so this place has a special appeal to me. I love all the breads here (so fresh and all so delicious), and the small samples they put out on the counter. There are also amazing scones and croissants and cookies, as well as ready-made sandwiches (be forewarned, they are substantial!) and sandwiches one can order that can be made fresh and grilled up. When I last visited, I wanted to get my kid a croissant and was torn between the chocolate and the almond options (she loves both kinds). I asked the lady at the counter which one she'd recommend and she said they had chocolate-almond croissants (both flavors together), not on display, but she'll get me one. Wow, how perfect! (My kid told me later that it was divine!). I also got a half baguette and had it sliced and it was great and gone in 5 hours (we all love bread in our house!). The aroma alone in this bakery is dangerous. Again, be forewarned. There's usually an awesome musician/singer in the makeshift square outside the front door here, making it the perfect spot to enjoy your pastries while sitting on the chairs right outside. Counter staff are nice but there have been times I've come into this store and the line hasn't moved an inch in 10 minutes and I've had to leave (this has actually happened a few times), so know that service can be spotty, depending on how busy it is (or if there's one customer holding up the whole line with an intricate order of sorts). Found them at the Burnaby Farmers Market today and tried out their double baked almond croissant. Although the look of it was extremely disappointing (almost no almonds on top), I still really enjoyed it when biting into it! It was sweet but not overly so and not too buttery either! I normally love this place but their falafel wrap is a crime against food. Falafel is cooked. A smear of raw chickpea spread that doesn't even qualify as hummus is unforgivable. This should be pulled from their menu ASAP as it's single-handedly the worst item they've ever had and it makes me wonder if they've ever had falafel. We tried out the apple cheddar walnut gallette and the double baked pistachio croissant. They were both so flaky and buttery. The apple cheddar had a nice flavour and the cheese wasn't too strong. The pistachio croissant was really good. It was a postachio chocolate croissant, making it even more delicious. Plenty of pistachio flavour with bits of chocolate. Bread Affair is located in Granville Market. Locals and tourists alike come in to buy fresh loaves of bread, croissants and cookies! The breads have pretty interesting names... interesting aka sexual. I didn't look to deeply into the names and if they corresponded to the ingredients of the different loaves, but there is a large variety of loaves with different ingredients. They also sell half loaves of French baguettes which I thought was pretty cool. The cookies are pretty amazing if you like soft/cookie batter like cookies. I had the chocolate chip and it was soft and sweet and perfection. The young girl at the cash register was helpful, and the older lady was nice, but spoke in pretty broken English. The line can get pretty long and they do run out of items, so come early if you want to buy something specific. read more

I love scones and when I saw something out of the ordinary ie. squash with sage scone, I thought, "Hello!". I also bought the Lemon Blueberry Ginger scone. The texture of these scones are amazing. Some scones are kinda too moist for my liking. These are drier but in a very good way. We were on Granville Island and stopped in to see if they had any sweet treats. They did, will displays of cookies (about 5 varieties), brownies, and lots of breads. If I lived here, I would have liked to try a loaf of their bread. We decided to get cookies and the lady working told us it would a better deal to get 3 so we did. We got the ginger, chocolate chip, and peanut butter cookies. I didn't have my cookie until later that day but found the peanut butter cookie to be not too dry and peanut buttery. There was chocolate too, which was great with peanut butter. My husband had the ginger cookie and he liked it. I fell in love today. I was itching with excitement at the thought of a bakery, swooning the second I caught a whiff of that freshly baked bread, and over the moon once I walked in and saw the assortment of delicious goodness they had. I ordered the chocolate croissant, and it is easily the best I've had in years (and a strong contender for favourite ever). The very informative and kind person behind the counter offered us samples and explained the history of the ancient grain within the bread that was on the counter after he caught me staring at it with googly eyes (yes, I like bread). They stopped commercial production of this bread decades ago, and then a number of years ago, the bakery acquired 100 seeds, cultivated them and they are now in the third year of baking this bread. So much history, quality and deliciousness. We also had the mini pizza, which was also delicious. I actually wanted to come back here right before I left to get more croissants and bread to take home but it was Saturday morning, so although I did manage to get into Granville Island, parking, walking to the store, and getting my order, and managing to make my flight was an impossible task so I chose to be a responsible adult and catch my flight. I got the butter maple tart and the double baked croissant with pistachio cream. The bill came out to exactly Canadian $10.00 . I thought it was a little pricy. But once I took a bite of each. I was mesmerized by how sinfully delicious they were. The butter maple tart brought me back to my old college time in Sudbury. I savored each bite slowly , the creamy and dreamy custard of maple tart, the pistachio cream with the buttery flaky layers and crispy outer layer of croissant . It was heaven.
