Best local mechanic for Mercedes-Benz. They did an amazing job diagnosing my Mercedes diesel suv. Very responsive and fair rates.

We're relatively new in the area and Josh welcomed us and made us feel right at home. It was our first time in Carrboro and we'd just eaten next door at Luna Rotisserie and Taproom: https://www.yelp.com/biz/luna-rotisserie-and-tap-room-carrboro-2. On our way back to the car, my wife pointed out that we were walking right past this Advance Auto Parts. Knowing me, I often need to buy something for my 20-year-old car, whether it be oil, a bulb, or windshield washer fluid. On this particular visit, I needed some of the latter. As soon as we entered the store, Josh asked us what we were looking for. I told him, he pointed us in the right direction, and then he told us a lot about the windshield washer fluids they had in stock and gave us honest advice. They carried a few different types of Rain-X plus a cheaper brand. Josh said most customers go with the cheap stuff, that all the brands/types of washer fluid were essentially the same, and to pick our favorite color. There was blue, green, orange, and purple. I've been purchasing Rain-X brand products for the last two decades so I went with the more expensive orange Rain-X 2-in-1 (de-icer and bug remover) which I've used before. One gallon cost $5.90 after tax. The store was set up to follow COVID-19 safety protocols. The counters were roped off to promote separation between employees and customers. The counters also had plexiglass barriers installed. Josh wore a mask when interacting with us. After checking out, Josh noticed my wife carrying two boxes of leftovers from our meal at Luna. He offered her a bag. That was nice of him. The bags were Carquest bags (Advance Auto Parts owns Carquest). Knowing we were new to the area, Josh offered up advice/recommendations for the area if we wanted. Also nice of him. I noticed this Advance Auto Parts store is smaller than other Advance Auto Parts stores I've been in. The store number is 1054. Parking can be hard to come by in this part of town. However, this store has its own free, dedicated spots located conveniently right next to the building. Thank you, Josh!

Indeed, it was under warranty so the staff began the process of replacing it. Joshua is the employee who helped me. He didn't know what he was getting into. :-) He tested the old battery, confirming that it needed replacing. He took out the old battery and put in a replacement. He then went through the process of testing the starter, alternator and new battery ... and determined that the NEW battery was defective. (He said that in his 14 years that had happened only one other time.) Joshua then got another battery, put it in and ran the tests again to determine that all was good. But he noted that the cable terminal attaching to the battery's positive anode couldn't be fully tightened, setting off a good 40 minutes of work to replace the cable terminal. I could not have been more satisfied with the service Joshua gave me. He told me he has worked at Advance for 14 years. I see other comments here that attest to the friendly, expert help the staff at Advance in Carrboro regularly provide. I can confirm it is true!

After the tune up did not fix the issue, I was told my throttle body and MAP sensor needed to be replaced ($900). When they realized that didn't fix the issue, the told me I needed a new engine or to replace the cylinder head (quoted at $6,000+). At this point I told them to not do any further work and I went to retrieve my vehicle. At the time I went to get my car, I asked for them to show me my throttle body that was damaged, initially they were unable to show me the damage because they did not have it in their possession anymore and that NAPA auto parts store had it because it had a core charge on it. Well I went over to NAPA to ask if their new throttle body had a core charge and they told me there was no core charge on new throttle bodies only on refurbished ones. When I went back over to Al's Garage to ask to have the throttle body replacement chargers removed, they had no issue taking it off my bill but also "my" old throttle body magically reappeared and they put the old one back on my car. Well, I took my vehicle to get another diagnosed by 3 different mechanics, one being the actual Jeep dealership. All 3 mechanics came up with the same diagnosis and were unsure why they would do a tune up for my issue I was having. Other mechanics I spoke with as well, said in the situation if they provided me with a misdiagnosis and the problem wasn't fixed from their diagnosis they wouldn't keep charging me more to "test and check". I reached out to Al's Garage over the phone and spoke to a representative who had a very recognizable voice due to his accent. I asked if a manager was in while on the phone, and he said he did not know. I then asked if he knew who the owner was and again did not know. I then decided to return in person to speak with someone to find a resolution, the same guy who answered the phone, who referred to himself as Jerry, was there again. I explained the situation again, and he refused to work with me to find a resolution. I then asked for a business card and he refused to provide one and was initially reluctant to provide the name of the owner of the shop. It's unfortunate this situation is needing to come to this, but shops like this need to be put out of business to stop giving a bad rep for all the great mechanics and shops who are willing to do the right thing and not take advantage of costumers.
