I really wanted to like this salon I went there three times. The first time was OK, the second time was weird. The stylist "prescribed" nutritional supplements. My hair is fine, but it's strong and shiny and I've never been told that fine hair can be changed by supplements. The third time I chose a different stylist. I've been getting Aveda color for 25 or so years and have NEVER had it applied to wet hair. But OK. I'm game. It was the haircut that was the major problem. She cut the back of my hair with multi stack scissors (cuts layers quickly) rather than point cutting the ends as stylists usually do. But she didn't blend the layers into the rest of my hair, leaving a "shelf" of layers that looked odd. Also, my hair in the front was one inch longer on one side. I could tell by simply moving some hair to the other side how uneven it was. I found a different salon and love my stylist there. She spent a great deal of time blending those awful back layers into my hair so it had movement again. Like I said, I really wanted to like A Better Day Salon. The people are so nice. If you're not geriatric, keep away! The owner ruined my hair! I am still steaming pissed at the service I did, or did NOT receive here. Interestingly enough my Google review never got posted.... I'd like my $140 back for having orange/red dye painted on my wet hair in a poorly lit location after I explained my base color is cool and dark... Old lady snarked at me and said my base is blonde with red highlights! She accused my beloved hairdresser, who had a family member pass away and had to go out of the country, of razor cutting my long layers. When I said no, she said "oh so this is all. breakage..." I replied no, it's not. I got a real sarcastic response "oh, really?!" I went home with wet hair that i already could see my part was looking orange, and didn't realize how uneven and crappy my haircut was. My bangs were cut wet and still too short two weeks later. I appreciate she squeezed in doing my base color when I was told there was only time for a cut. I also agreed to return the following Saturday for my foil highlights. I had no idea Janiece was the owner until I asked, wet hair & no scalp massages, if the tip was included in my $140 bill. When I got home, dried my hair, and tried to justify paying for Aveda that must be applied to wet hair.... Looked at my crappy, calico cat color and cut... I canceled the follow-up appointment. No way in heck would I ever return to this salon for a foil! read more

A picture is worth a thousand words. I went in to this salon for the first time to get a shampoo and blow out/style for a special event. Provided a pic to the stylist that is included in this post. Nothing too difficult. I told him I usually only put in a little mousse for body and to hold styling. He put in mousse and then preceded to put in a lot of something else. Later I looked at the bottle and saw that it was liquid gel. My hair is fine and I have never put gel in it to style. I then knew that this might not worked out as I hoped. other two pics are exactly what my hair looked like immediately after I left the salon. I had one hr until my event so I didn't even complain or ask for it to be redone. I rushed home and did my best to comb it out, blow dry it smooth and put in a few curls. Was a total waste on $47.00. I believe Aaron (Magician )was the name of the stylist. Unfortunately he did not work his magic on me. He may be good at cutting or possibly men's style. When I asked where he was trained he said at a mens barber shop. I think he could do with some training with styling women's hair. i can only laugh about it now. No real harm as it wasn't permanent but I did waste time and money. And my hair did not look as nice as if I had just did it at home. I ended up giving an interview at the event with photos included which I hadn't anticipated. I'm dreading seeing my picture in print. read more

So, I'm pretty unhappy with our first experience at this salon. Was told over the phone that the all-in-one price covers everything. "Everything" according to their website is wash, cut, blow dry. No tipping. Sounded great in theory. It was quite expensive for a child's haircut but without tipping and it being so close to home I figured it kind of evened itself out. They do require masks to enter. The female stylist (Janiece?) brought my 9 year old daughter back to the washing sink and proceeded to glue a face shield to her forehead without asking her permission or mine. She was already wearing a mask. My daughter was a good sport but clearly uncomfortable with the entire shield fogging up. Stylist cuts her hair and says all done! Leaves it soaking wet and says she doesn't blow dry because it spreads covid around. She then asks my 9 year old if her hair is even. Are you kidding?? Maybe dry her hair and check it since that's what we are paying for? Spoiler alert - once we got home a dried it... it's not even. My daughter said she will just deal with it because she doesn't want to go back. Then proceeds to charge fifty dollars. My normal stylist charges thirty-five for kids and that includes a blow dry and style. When I asked about this price and the website saying this included blow dry, she said her time spent drying is now spent cleaning for covid. Ok. Again, a heads up would've been appreciated when scheduling. Also the face shields are only for her clients. That's why some clients don't wear them. Super unhappy with the experience and I do not plan to return. For what it's worth - I don't care if businesses have strict covid policies. That's their right. I just wish ALL of this would have been communicated up front because had I known about the No blow dry/style, mandatory shields (for select customers only apparently), etc, I would've taken my child elsewhere. The good: the front desk receptionist is lovely. Very friendly and personable. read more

My hairdresser, Douglas (who's also one of the owners), knows exactly how I like my hair and does it perfectly each time. Prices are reasonable. They have a strict NO TIPPING policy which I feel makes the interaction more professional. I also appreciate their strict covid safety protocols. I agree with the other reviewer that said 'If I could give negative stars, I would.' Not one stylist here knows what they're doing. And they all chime in on everything, so they voluntarily provide you with the knowledge that not one of them has a clue. Not sure what his name is, but the Magician guy was the one assigned to me. He started looking over my hair and I got the feeling that he didn't know what he was doing -I have intensely curly hair. He brought Douglas over for a consult and I got the feeling said Magician guy was a student and so I asked. Nope, fully licensed. Douglas proceeded to run his fingers through my hair, catching on several tangles and yet pulling through anyway. OUCH. They then mocked me for a sensitive head. After that, they consulted, what that consultation led to I don't know. Douglas then mentioned I have a very rare type of hair. Yes, but it's not that rare. A young female stylist noted I have thick hair. Wrong: I have dense hair, but not thick hair. I was taken over to be shampoo'd and conditioned. Magician guy used a brush on my hair. A brush. On CURLY HAIR. And then the old lady hair stylist inserted herself into a conversation she definitely wasn't in. Magician guy tried combing my hair for 20 minutes running under water (aka the easy way) and there were still tangles in it. It takes me seven minutes, even when it's really tangly, which it wasn't. He drenched it in oil, dried it poorly, and then sent me back to his station. It was that point in a horror movie when you're mentally screaming 'DON'T GO IN THERE!!!!!!' I stood up and said "this isn't gonna work, you couldn't even comb it properly, I'm absolutely terrified," and then he tried way too many pleasantries to say 'that's okay' and I was even more creeped out and basically went running out of the shop. TL;DR: Curly blonde hair; they couldn't comb it, so I sure as heck didn't trust them to cut it and walked out instead. 100% positive I made the right decision. read more

I rarely leave reviews for businesses, especially negative ones, but I had both the worst haircut of my life and the most unpleasant salon experience here. The picture attached speaks for itself -- I had to immediately schedule a haircut elsewhere to get my hair evened out as they were several random chunks that were several inches longer than the rest of my hair. No, I did not ask for that, I wanted a simple few inches off of my long hair. Also, my stylist rubbed rubbing alcohol on my forehead and glued a face shield directly onto my forehead while I was in the hair washing chair (I was already wearing a mask). She did not ask permission to do this beforehand and I found it very unpleasant and invasive. Also, I noted that the other patron at the salon did not have a face shield glued to her forehead! I also received a 15 minute long lecture about why the shampoos I am using are incredibly harmful and why I must buy Aveda products. I thought that being an Aveda salon would guarantee some basic level of quality, not just set me up for a sales pitch. Would not go back if you paid me. read more

First experience good. Second experience not good. But owner spoke with me, and we came to a resolution. When my hair grows long enough to get fixed, I will probably let them try to fix it and earn back the high regard I had from first experience. Just make sure they listen to your specific requests. I requested a blunt haircut but got really short layers cut in when I specifically asked not to have any--they will take a long time to grow out and it was such a shock seeing my hair when I put my glasses back on. read more

I love this place. They are very careful and conscientious with Covid protocols, very sterile. Janiece is my hair stylist and she is the best one I have ever had. She gives me exactly what I want and Better! She is very intelligent and well-informed also, and we always have great conversations. Her husband is the other stylist, and I've heard he's great also. I have had a hard time finding a stylist that does such a great job. I had the same stylist for about 36 yrs. but she left. I tried many stylists before I tried Douglas. I don't even LIVE in Lake Forest Park (or Shoreline, or Seattle, or Washington State) and I get my hair cut here. I am so, so happy not to be paying for their interior design every time I get a trim. The space is certainly not stylish, but I'm cool with that. The salon has a no-tipping policy - they ask for referrals of new clients instead (and lo! I ended up here through a long, twisting chain of word-of-mouth.) More points in their favor: - Nice scalp massage during the shampoo. - Funny, laid-back stylist (Douglas? I think?) Didn't look at me like I'd just said I kicked puppies recreationally when I admitted to never doing anything with my hair beyond rolling out of bed and brushing it. Writes down funny and useful things that his clients say. I appreciated his good-natured tyranny ("Oh, don't do your bangs like that. I've been a guest at this salon for a number of years now and I can't recommend them highly enough. Each customer receives personal care, no matter how busy they are. I have changed my hair style significantly over the years and I have appreciated the input from Janiece. (And I have to admit that she was right when she recommended I not I make a bad decision about a hair style that was not suited to me.) I book in advance to make sure I can get an appointment, though I have sometimes seen walk-ins get an appointment. I like that the salon uses Aveda products and I don't feel pressured to purchase them (but I do because I like them). Best of all, the price quoted is the price you pay - no tipping. This is a good place for a well-done haircut for those who don't want a super fancy, expensive salon but don't want to go to cheapy Supercuts either. My hair was very well cut and even. It looked great. They do a head massage while washing that is common to many salons and I'm not into that. And I don't want to particularly know how much my hair comes out when it's washed, but other than that, everything was fine. I definitely would go back. There's a no-tipping policy which is kind of nice. So when they say a cut is $30, they mean it. They just need to update the decor and make it a little hipper. read more

I have gone to A Better Day for at least 5 years, maybe longer as I'm totally losing track. I live only a block away and it occurred to me one day that I should try to get my haircut right here in my own neighborhood. These people were fabulous. The owner is funny, kind, and generous. My daughter who was in 4th grade at the time got a beautiful little pocket-dictionary in her local public elementary school classroom---turns out it was donated by A Better Day Salon. I love their commitment to local community. The atmosphere of the place is absolutely FABULOUS with lovely music and the incredible smell of Aveda (always fantastic for me). I love the products they sell, including safer nail polish. I never feel that I'm breathing in the smells of perms...it's quite wonderful. It is really nice to have the haircut one price, no tips, no worries about what should or shouldn't be tipped, just the price. I can send my kids over there to get a haircut and pre-pay. And finally, the actual haircut is always wonderful. I have very straight, hard-to-layer hair and Douglas especially does a fantastic job. I highly recommend it. read more

Look, I did not want this to get this far, however after what happened, followed by 3 years of nuisance and inconvenience I find I have to tell people what your salon really does. I am a combat veteran and I suffer from Major Depressive disorder. I don't get my hair cut very often, because my depression is severe. 3 years ago I came to this salon to get my hair cut. The male hair stylist takes one look at me and says, "Let's see if we can make it look like you give a fuck." The man was never polite or kind in any way and by the end of the hair cut, I was nearly in tears. So I decided not to go to this salon every again. That should have been the end of it, but then the emails started. I attempted to get unsubscribed from their emails 7 or 8 times, and they refuse to stop sending me emails. It's been 3 years. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!! I'm never going to your crappy salon, ever again. Every time I get stupid email from this salon, I get upset and I'm tired of it. This is unprofessional and cruel. Do yourself a favor, and do not go to this salon. They are not professional, and they treat people like crap. Once they have your email address, they will torment you endlessly for years. read more

Awesome! I called early in the day and they got me in later that afternoon. I have thin, straight hair that I had neglected for a few months. When I came in, my ends looked like a frightened yeti had a run-in with an electric socket. Isabel did such a great job styling it to have body and bounce while still keeping it long. I was in and out in about 45 minutes with a fresh new cut for only $35 (no tip as per their policy) - a great price for the result. If I remember correctly, the SUPER nice lady at the front desk (Jennifer?) said their prices range from $25-$40 depending on who you get. Isabel showed me a few volumizing products that I loved without being pushy at all to sell them as add-ons. definitely coming back here. read more
