I ordered a cheeseburger (and it only came with pickles, mustard and ketchup). It was 4.99. I also ordered a large drink, which was 3.79. LULU simply asked me if I wanted a combo meal, and I said no. Today is Tuesday and there is a SPECIAL that comes with a cheeseburger (with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and mayo and mustard) plus a drink and fries for 5.99. Mind you, my small cheeseburger and large drink came up to ~9.00. There are two signs regarding this special and they are both behind the doors of the restaurant, which you would never turn around and see when you are ordering. Not only that but LULU (if that's her name, she's got some green in her hair today) never mentioned that there was a special that came with much more for 5.99 than the 9.00 I paid. That was horrible customer service. Not only was the burger was horrible but when I confronted her about the entire situation she was extremely condescending and didn't offer anything. I came here during lunch time because i wanted to try their cheese dog. The line was pretty long but the drive through service was pretty fast. So it didnt take a lot of my lunch time. I ordered the cheese fries and the papa burger. $5 dollar for the papa burger?? Man it was not worth it. I can make a better burger than that. This is the worst A&W I've ever been to. The last couple times have been the absolute worst. We stopped here on the way to the beach a month ago for a quick bite and our food was just thrown in bags. No boxes for chili dogs. No cutlery either. We asked about it upon opening and all they said was we're out of boxes, forks, and foil. And seemed bothered that we were upset! I also went by there just a few mins ago for a root bear float and after sitting in the drive-thru for approx 10 mins, I order a float and in response I'm told "our machine is down. Went in today (on Richmond Parkway) for a KFC five dollar fill-up box as advirtized by the Colonel on TV commercials. Here $5 is $6.49, yikes! I asked the clerk about this unexpected price increase and she just smiled, she just charges prices shown, which are set by the franchise owner.. Also the smallish cookie and biscuit came wrapped in sealed plastic wrap. Which means they were not made fresh on site. Very disappointed. Classic example of bait and switch. Wonder if KFC corporate is aware of this scam. Also ordered the A & W cheeseburger for $2.99, did not include tomato or lettuce, just the meat and cheese. Also a rip off. The Colonel is rolling over in his grave, he had integrity. I'll stick to Burger King in El Cerrito, always a positive experience. read more

I grew up in modesto, CA where the A&W burger joint originated. So when my mom yanked me out of that no good city needless to say i was devastated. Most of the restaurants i love are there. So i'm driving along and i see the familiar sign and i kid you not it just made my day so much better. Super nice people, good food and great memories!! Highly recommend coming here! I live nearby and this place has been there a while - I stopped going there several years ago and now I remember why. The woman at the counter was polite and the dine-in order was ready fast enough but both times - a week ago then today - the food was not too good. Not really much good at all. Last week I had a Papa Burger and fries and the meat patties were dry, had too much of a burnt-tasting crust and had no taste. The fries were not hot, just kinda warm and therefore a bit soggy. The root beer was good but the food wasn't good at all. I probably would not have returned but I noted that day that they had some kind of corn dog bites and cheese curds and today on the way home I remembered this and stopped again. Again, the service was prompt and friendly but the food was nasty. I had fried cheese curds, fried corn dog chunks and fries. The corn dog and cheese items *could have* been pretty good - they seemed to be coked properly but they tasted bitter, rancid and old - I think this is likely because the frying oil had not been changed in a long time. Awful taste. The fries had the same bad taste and like last week they were barely warm and they were limp and soggy. I do believe I'm done with this place. Maybe in another five years I will have forgotten these experiences and stop in again. But I doubt it. read more

Don't usually review fast food places, but this one had a terrible rating and pretty damn good service. I've been here before for drive-thru service, which wasn't the best, but I have to say I was surprised by what was going on inside the doors. Always have good service here from the workers and the burgers are good. We have alot of different fast food places around here and I really like this one. As a chain they are fairly upfront so burgers is kind of their thing and i havent been displeased yet. If you go make sure to get a root beer and a cheese burger. This is a bad A & W. They have a homemade sign that drink refills are $1, so I am guessing that it is just this franchise owner. How cheap can you get? Soda costs them pennies and you can't even give free refills? Also, I got the crunch burger. This place was filthy. Almost all the tables had garbage and grease on them. To their credit the guy that took our order (his name was Lucky) was very polite. We ordered a 6 piece meal and got it fairly quickly but when I asked for water cups the guy said "ok" then walked away and started filling the drive thru orders. I asked the girl that was just standing back behind the counter for a cup and she pointed to the guy and said "he's getting it" and then just stood there with her arms folded doing nothing. Finally she got it for us but it took a while. There was a couple that had been there a while and said they had been waiting 20 minutes for 2 hotdogs and 2 fries, I told her she should get their money back. Overall it was dirty, no forks or plates or honey, butter or napkins unless you asked for them behind the counter.
