My breakfast room window, which is next to the fire escape, has been broken since the day I moved into the apartment. The super tried to fix it over the 6 years that I've lived here; however, it remained broken and dangerous. Fortunately, Altin and Egli, who are employed by A&J, came today and fixed my window. AND NOT A WORD FROM ANYONE.** I hired Reggie Villa / A&J Window and Glass to create custom window screens and a balcony screen solution for my apartment. Based on my recommendation, two neighbors also hired him and paid deposits as well. What followed was weeks of missed appointments, repeated promises to "check with the factory and call me back within the hour," long stretches of no communication, repeated promises that things would be ready "next week," and eventually requests for refunds that never materialized. As delays continued, Ilona Gumenyuk repeatedly communicated on the company's behalf regarding scheduling, refunds, and assurances that replacement materials and payments were forthcoming. When Reggie finally arrived to install my window screens, he showed up hours late with screens that were several inches too short and did not fit properly (see photo). Instead of acknowledging the issue, he attempted to explain the large visible gaps as intentional. One screen had to literally be hammered into place. Even after this, I still allowed myself to believe repeated assurances that properly fitted replacement screens and refunds were finally coming. They weren't. Since then, the two neighbors I referred have filed complaints with the Office of the New York State Attorney General Consumer Frauds Bureau, the Better Business Bureau, and local law enforcement. It is also worth noting that the company's Google Business Profile now appears as "Permanently Closed," despite the company continuing to communicate with customers and schedule supposed future work. A&J Windows - My Final Experience AVOID AT ALL COSTS... I've been a loyal customer and have referred A&J Windows to countless others. Sadly, after repeated recent experiences, I can say with certainty: I will never use them again. This is not an angry rant--it's a careful, factual account of a company that has crossed the line from incompetence to outright deception. Communication & Professionalism Getting in touch with them is nearly impossible. Dozens of calls and emails go ignored. When Reggie finally responds, it's with a new excuse, never accountability. This isn't a one-off--it's the norm. Issue #1 - Misuse of Funds / Nothing Delivered On a $16,000 skylight job, their supplier confirmed that A&J never even ordered the product--despite Reggie telling me countless times, "I'll install tomorrow." Meanwhile, they charged me more than 100% of the contract total and delivered absolutely nothing I paid for. This is not a misunderstanding--it's a Trust Fund Violation and fraud, plain and simple. Issue #2 - Seven No-Shows with an Open Roof After cutting open the roof, they cancelled seven separate times, often the morning of the supposed install--always insisting, "Tomorrow without fail." But no skylight had ever been ordered. My crew had to patch and reopen the roof six separate times (4+ hours labor each) to prevent water damage. This rippled across the project, holding up roofers, framers, Sheetrock, stair installers, and landscapers--delaying us by more than two months. Issue #3 - Bait & Switch on Materials On another project, they showed up with cheap spray-painted vinyl windows instead of the bronze aluminum specified in our signed contract. When I refused delivery, Reggie claimed I had "approved vinyl in person"--a blatant lie. As someone who has despised vinyl windows for 15+ years, there is no scenario in which I would ever have agreed to that substitution. Issue #4 - Referrals Burned A client I referred reported a nearly identical story: upfront payment demands, subpar workmanship, and refusal to fix mistakes. That reflects directly on me--and I deeply regret ever recommending them. Bottom Line For nine months I've pursued reimbursement, with nothing but stall tactics. First Yelp review ever. Stay away. Unreliable. They insisted on coming for an in-person estimate vs offering a ballpark on Yelp like every other company. At first, this seemed like a good thing and that they were being exact and precise in their work. So I took the afternoon off and arranged to have them come to my apt the following week. On the day they were supposed to come by, I received a call 2 hours before they were due, telling me they wouldn't be able to make it that day. At first, I thought, ok, emergencies occur. But the reason I was given was that the owner decided to pull the guy doing my estimate off the job so he could help the owner move his office. I asked why I wasn't contacted earlier to reschedule, before taking a half day. The response was that they just found out about this! WHAT??? Did the owner decide to pick up and move offices on a whim?? Makes no sense at all. Zero regard for other people's time and inconvenience. However the leaks continue and getting them to come back is truly a challenge. I finally managed to get in touch with Alana and eventually Jessie cane back but there continues to be a leak. WARNING: Unlicensed Contractor, Fraudulent Practices, and Physical Threats I hired AJ Windows Inc. (1629 Bath Ave, Brooklyn), also operating as AJ Window and Glass (7106 20th Ave, Brooklyn), to repair and replace six windows. The experience has been a complete nightmare. Consumers must be aware that this company is not licensed by the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). Furthermore, the lead installer, who identifies himself only as "Mr. Reggie," refuses to disclose his legal surname--a major red flag regarding accountability. Work Quality & Fraudulent Misrepresentation: The project was defined by excessive delays and constant "no-shows." The overall quality is substandard: windows are improperly sealed, caulking is inadequate, and the molding/painting was done haphazardly by unskilled labor. My walls were damaged, and debris, garbage, and chemicals (solvents, paints) were left scattered throughout the rooms. Most significantly, I have uncovered evidence of fraud. Regarding a custom-built, horizontally split window promised in our contract: Mr. Reggie arrived three months late and installed an old, used, painted-over window that was incorrectly sized for the frame. A massive gap now allows cold air to gush into the room. The presence of an old "half-lock" on the unit confirms this was not a new window as represented. This is a clear case of fraud, where a used item was installed under the guise of being new. (See attached pictures). Safety Issues & Threats: When I inspected the window and requested that the work be completed properly, Mr. Reggie became physically aggressive and verbally abusive. He issued multiple threats, stating he was "crazy," that "bad things would happen" to me unless he was paid, and that he would return to break my windows. He also threatened to harass my tenants. Conclusion: I have filed a formal criminal harassment report with the NYPD (24th Precinct). Do not hire this company. They are unlicensed, their work is defective, they engage in fraudulent business practices, and their behavior is dangerous. NYPD Report filed under #2025-024-06236 on December 20, 2025. I will report this company to the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), and to the Better Business Bureau. When it came to quality, glass thickness, hurricane rating, and cost, AJ Window Haus stood out by far. I went with a 3-panel slider, and the difference is night and day. The doors glide effortlessly--I can literally move all three panels using just my pinky. The craftsmanship is top-tier and truly speaks for itself. My only regret? Not having Alex's team install it. I thought my contractor could handle it, but the installation was clearly more complex than expected. I was on edge the entire time. If you're considering a door from AJ, I strongly recommend using their installation team--they know their product inside and out. Always canceling and tons of no-shows. As we approach Thanksgiving, the elderly woman is still without an operable kitchen. After some shopping around they gave us the best quote, and it was all done in a few days: excellent communication, they where on time, professional, clean and efficient. I bid out a window replacement and included A&J due to their 5-start rating on yelp. They promptly scheduled a visit to measure and quickly produced a quote. However, I asked if they would produce an itemized bill and they said no, they would just provide one all-in price. Upon comparing their quote to others for purchase and install of the same model window from the same manufacturer, I realized the reason was to hide massive markups. I received quotes from 4 window companies on the same job and theirs was 2-5x higher than the other three companies who submitted a bid. I can't comment on the quality of their work, but people typically run their entire business in the same way. I definitely wouldn't hire them if I didn't have 4-5 competing bids. read more
