I had the pleasure of learning to scuba dive through A-1 Scuba diving 40 years ago. I have continued to be a patron throughout the years because they have great scuba gear, a fantastic facility and they are the nicest group of people I've met in a business related capacity. I haven't been diving with them for an extended period now due to health related issues, but I'm planning a trip with them sometime in the hopefully not too distant future to motivate me as I go through addressing some of these problems via appropriate surgical procedures . Just knowing my reward for having these procedures done will be a dive trip with them is providing motivation for my pre-surgical pre-rehab routine and post op. Prehab is the exercises and activities you do before a surgery in order to optimize the surgical recovery and results . Diving is such an intoxicating activity. I could think of none better to serve this function. The inherent joy of diving is enhanced when you go with an A1 sponsored trip because you typically meet a great group of people and share a lot of spectacular diving as well as fun post diving activities. Yes and one or two libations might enter the picture. Thank you everyone at A-1!! I can't believe that after all these years of you providing excellent services and equipment to me that I didn't take the time to acknowledge your excellence before. read more

My daughter took the Weekend *PLUS* Course. Thomas was her instructor and took the class through safety, and all the information needed to begin this adventure. The weekend ended with completing her classroom/pool certification and moving on to dives 1 and 2 for open water certification. Those dives were at the Downtown Aquarium in Denver. I had the opportunity to sit by the segment of the tank where they were going through all the skills they learned in class. It was a lot of hard work over the course of one weekend but worth it. The store staff was always welcoming. They helped us with fitting her with the right mask, the right fins and a few other necessities. We had also booked for her to do dives 3 and 4 to complete open water certification the next month at Blue Hole in New Mexico. On the second day of her weekend class, we had her measured for the dive suit she would need for the New Mexico dive. At that time we made arrangements for when we would pick up her tank, weights, suit and vest for that excursion. A few weeks later it was time for New Mexico. One of her instructors, Heather, was in contact via email to let her know the schedule and to provide the information for getting her diving permit for that site. Heather was helpful answering questions. On the morning of our road trip, we popped into the shop shortly after they opened and picked up her gear for the dive. At Blue Hole, the A-1 instructors, Heather and Carol, were informative and got the group ready for their descent. My daughter had some difficulty with one of her mask skills and both Heather and Carol worked with her until she was able to get the skill down that she needed to complete. Highly recommend A-1 Scuba. The instructors want to see their students succeed. They are patient and encouraging. read more

I could not have had a more positive experience as an introduction to scuba diving. Every single person who is on staff is incredibly welcoming, non-judgmental, and willing to answer any question you could have about scuba diving. One thing that is also very wonderful about the scuba training center is that they are one of only two centers in the Denver area that offer adaptive scuba Classes to make sure that scuba diving is accessible, both physically and financially to people with disabilities. They also organize scuba diving trips in the Caribbean, as well as scuba, diving certifications of many varieties. The facility is spacious and very clean. The swimming pool is indoors and has a shallow end as well as a 12 foot deep and. I am not somebody who's ever been ident at swimming much less having my entire face submerged underwater and I feel like I really accomplished some thing by conquering a Bit of a fear. Unfortunately, I did not get a scuba certification, perhaps one day, but I did try scuba diving inside of the indoor swimming pool. I had such a wonderful experience and thank every single person who works there for creating such an inclusive space read more

I highly recommend A-1 Scuba, whatever you scuba needs are. You need gear, they have it. You need your gear fixed, they can do that. You need some place to use your gear, they can book it for you. Everyone from the front door to the back end is friendly and helpful. I cannot say enough things about this shop. Not to mention the pool which they keep warm enough to dive without a wetsuit and it's underwater speakers pumping out classic rock is a nice bonus. I'd probably live in this pool if they would let me. read more

A1 Scuba is simply the best dive shop anywhere. We have tried many local, national, and international dive shops, and never have we experienced the warm personal care and attention that we consistently receive from A1 Scuba. The owner's Scott and Lynn manage to keep the same staff at all levels from the retail shop to the service center and training/education team. When you visit for new equipment, be sure to ask for Brett or Austin! Not only will you receive top service, patience, and expertise, but you will make new friends. We can't wait to drop in again to say hi and update our dive kits!! read more

Took our classes here to be certified scuba divers. Would highly recommend! We did our open water certification in Australia and felt well prepared and confident getting in the water with their instruction. Helpful store to get masks that fit well. Haven't been in the water since doing the "zero viz" dives at Aurora and Chatfield reservoirs around 2006-ish so I stopped in to get 'a fix'.... (You fellow divers will understand)! Spent about 45 minutes with staff and Mackenzie, assistant training director.... Greta people, funny, knowledgeable - because I tested them .... Definitely would recommend this shop to anyone who has questions or is thinking about learning how to SCUBA dive!!! read more

While visiting Colorado, I came across an ad about shark diving experience at the aquarium. Being recently certified, it was something I had to try. The registration process was very easy, just filled out everything online, only had to call to make sure I can bring and use my camera. Amazing experience with A-1 scuba instructors taking us into the shark tank in the Downtown Aquarium in Denver. We spent about 40 minutes in the water while taking photos and pictures of the sharks. It was an experience I wouldn't forget and definitely recommend to others. read more

Great service department. Time for the annual inspections and A-1 does a great job. Quality service to keep me safe for the 2022 diving

Excellent business, I highly recommend them for anything scuba related! I took my certification course with them and had a great experience. The owners, Lynn and Scott, as well as Nichole were all great teachers who were all incredibly experienced and patient in helping me learn the ropes. Austin in the retail department was also very helpful in helping me buy high quality equipment that worked for me for good prices. Everyone here is incredibly kind and experienced, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

This is just a great place all around. The staff is always so friendly and helpful, they have great products and a very nice facility to learn how to scuba dive in. I took my open water certification here and the class was fun and very informative. Tony and Kevin were great pool instructors and I felt prepared to do my chatfield certification with Jenn and John this past summer. I now getting ready to go on my first dive trip to Belize in a week. The rental process is very easy and I can't wait to pick up my gear. I'm planning a trip to an all-inclusive Caribbean resort where diving is included. I'm certified but haven't dove since 2010. A-1 is nearby so I dropped in to see what my options were for a refresher class. They suggested SSI's Scuba Review & Skills Update class. I signed up for the following week. I reviewed the course materials online, printed and signed some forms, and showed up with my swimsuit and towel. The instructor was Dave G. There was only one other student in the class. Dave G. was excellent. He covered setting up the equipment (which was all furnished) in detail. Once in the pool, Dave G. described the skill, demonstrated it, and then had us perform it. After, we all surfaced and debriefed. Then he changed topics and repeated the process. His communications skills, both above and below water are excellent. He was also very knowledgeable about diving, answering all of our questions. Once the curriculum was finished, he asked us if we had anything we wanted to work on. Once on a dive, I got fin-kicked in the face and my mask was knocked off. I wanted to work on removing and replacing, then clearing my mask again. No problem. At the end, he signed my log book. I'll also be getting something from SSI. I feel prepared for the Caribbean. If you're in my situation, I highly recommend this update course. I also highly recommend Dave G. Besides being immensely qualified (over 3,000 dives), he's a great, patient instructor, and a nice, happy man. read more

A1 Scuba and Travel is one of the biggest scuba diving shops in the area and they have a decent selection of diving gear. Nonetheless, I was very disappointed in their customer service and classes. The organization of gear is a little clustered because when I walked into the shop by the door, I was buried in and surrounded by wetsuits. I was certain (at first) this was the reason why I didn't not get any service right away - they couldn't see I walked in! However, me being buried in wetsuits was not the reason for no service. The service there was less than par. When I got out of the cluster of wetsuits, I found someone working on an inventory list at a desk close by. I made eye contact with her hoping to be spoken to, but she looked back down at her inventory list and continued her work without speaking to me. At that point, I had to chase someone else down from across the shop to assist me (and this is a big shop). They acted very stern and short with me when I finally asked for help. It was pathetic. I also took a Nitrox class from there one weekday evening and it was boring. The teacher was not enthusiastic or friendly and it was obvious he couldn't wait for me to be certified and on my way back home. On a good note, the shop has their own pool. It is formulated specifically for diving classes and makes it very convenient. They have many resources for divers and snorkelers as well. As a diver who has been diving for 11+ years and has over 120 dives under her belt, A1 Scuba and Travel FAIL in customer service and diving education. Did a refresher course yesterday with Rita. She sent an email prior to the class to make sure I didn't have any questions and called the day before. What a fantastic instructor. She broke everything down and was engaging with each student. Some students were PADI and others SSI. She insured it was taught correctly for each. Visited their facility last week to signup for the class. Was greeted by Brett who was very friendly and gave of us tour of the facility. The facility and all their gear was maticulessly kept and organized. I know where I'm going for any future training. Thank You read more

I have had several positive experiences with this scuba shop. I stopped in a few years ago to buy a snorkel, mask, and fins based on recommendations from some of my dive friends. The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. They spent over an hour with us making sure we got a good fit and were in a good price range for our budget. We have been using the gear since 2007 on several trips and could not be happier with it. After years of snorkeling, we had been wanting to learn to dive with a lot of hesitation on my part (I am a scaredy cat!). We knew we would return to A1 for a Discover Scuba class to see if I could handle it. This was one of the most fun and rewarding experiences I can remember. Rita, our instructor was knowledgeable, capable, patient, and totally fun! I was definitely anxious about diving, but they prepare you and take everything at a comfortable pace. My husband took to diving like breathing and was swimming through hoops and playing games by the end of the class. We knew at this point that we would start the PADI Open Water certification process and that A1 was the place. We visited the Annual Open House, which by the way is awesome and has great seminars and specials. We signed up for the Knowledge Development and the staff were so helpful - they helped us save money by doing the written vs the online and doing an enhancement kit. We left the open house with new travel ideas and on the list for an upcoming Step 2 Pool Scuba class. They have so many options available - it was really easy to find a class that would work with our schedule. We picked the Gold Plus course which allowed us to complete the class over a Friday night and the following Saturday and Sunday. Finally, the date of the class arrived, we had Peter as our instructor and Kym as our assistant instructor. These guys were awesome! So knowledgeable, friendly, and well organized. The classroom sessions did not drag on and the pool time was great. They did a great job of educating and preparing us and I felt very safe the whole time. I also had a complete blast and feel ready for the open water dives. Actually I cannot wait. I have to pick my OW location (there are different options), but I have a feeling that my budget is going to include a lot of diving classes here in the future. I really cannot recommend these guys enough. Everyone I have interacted with there has been just awesome! I will use the place for all of my dive related needs, whether it be service, rental, classes, equipment or travel - and you should too! read more

I love this place! Boyfriend and I are certified divers. We're not hardcore about it and don't mind loaner equipment on location, but we decided we should get our own masks. Ryan was SO helpful and not pushy! He told us everything you would possibly want to know about the masks and then left us some room to make our choice. They have underwater cameras, river shoes, swimming shirts with UV protection, and they partner with the aquarium to do aquarium dives. Will be back! read more

We did your OW with A-1 and they were great. Ryan has always been very helpful in the store and knows tons about all the gear needs and unlike other shops has never tried to oversell, but very practical about the basics and excited for the cool gadgets if you like to toy shop. Our OW class instructors and DMs were awesome and made sure we were safe and competent above just going through the motions. Their emphasis on safe diving kept us out of bad situations more then once and made us confident to say no when we needed too rather then just blindly jump like cattle off a barge and to think underwater not panic. I don't think there is a regulator or gasket the repair shop they hasn't seen and they always call to talk about options to keep your gear in top shape and peace of mind the work is done right. Last but not least, the travel center is awesome and knows all the best places because they have likely been there and know first hand the best water or surface interval activities. They work with you to make sure your trip is fun for you. read more

I did there "Try Scuba" class and it was very interesting. I really enjoyed it and the staff was friendly and helpful and the instructor would take the time in a full class to make sure I was okay on the dive(my ears were hurting - still gotta learn the "pop" the ear technique). Anyways, this has inspired me to want to take the full scuba course prior to my vacation to the Cayman Islands that I have plans in Novemeber. I liked the tiki vibe the pool area had, I thought it was totally fun. I really like that one of the "dive options" at the end of the course included diving at the denver aquarium. Which seems super fun. Although this place is no where near my home(downtown denver), if it was closer I would do the course there. There is a different dive shop just blocks from my home. I'm gonna check it out... if I'm not satisfied then I'm gonna make the trek down to A-1. read more

We had a great experience at A-1! My husband and I stopped by the store on the Saturday after Christmas to pick up some snorkeling gear for an upcoming trip to Belize. We were surprised at how busy the store was, but the employees really did a great job balancing helping out all the customers. They were knowledgeable and helped us find the right fit for our needs with snorkel gear - we both bought fins, masks, and snorkels and they also helped us with waterproof swim bags and sunglasses. They were having some good sales, which was a nice surprise! After checking out, we watched the dive classes for a bit, which are in the pool attached (indoor). An employee explained that they do "certification weekends" where you can take classes on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning and do the open dives 1 and 2 for the certification - at the Denver Aquarium! How cool! read more

Took my granddaughter for a birthday "double header" of Swim With the Fish followed by the Shark Tank experience. This was her second time for Swim With the Fish and she still had a blast. The attentiveness of the dive guides and staff was brought home when she did the Shark Tank experience as her ears began to act up during the dive and she was taken back up early due to concerns about her ability to clear her ears properly. After the group dive, the guide came out to the waiting area and told us they were going to take her back down solo for a while since her group experience was not what she or they would have liked. She was allowed back down in the tank for a good 15 minutes or more one on one with the guide which turned what could have been a disappointment for her into a great memory. Kudos to the staff and my sincere thanks. read more

This place is pretty nice, decent selection for being in the mountains and a nice indoor pool. The prices were in line with local shops - took an altitude diving, night diving and nitrox specialty class there. The instruictors were quite good and the expereince was fun (who would have thought you can dive in Utah under ground in 90 degree spring water). From the moment I walked into A-1 I was thoroughly impressed. I was planning a trip to Maui in which I wanted to go diving on the trip. I walked in to A-1 to see how much scuba certification would be and what I needed to do to get certified before my trip. Megan had helped me and answered all my questions. She signed me up for the classes and took care of payment. She was extremely helpful and made me aware of all my options for the class. 2 weeks later I walked in to take my weekend class. Stosh was the teacher and Conor was the assistant. Both, right aware were very friendly and helpful. I spent all weekend in class. The class was fun and informational. Both teachers were helpful and would guide me through the sticky spots and always were willing to answer my questions. After our last day in class I left feeling very knowledgable about scuba and felt like the staff had went above and beyond. I thank everyone here and look forward to taking more classes here to expand my Scuba adventures. I'll recommend anyone here. read more

I was referred to A1 Scuba by a friend. We went and first checked out the facility as you hear stories about scuba shops not being professional at all. That was definitely not the case! It was clean and professional. There is a dive shop, travel center, then the dive training area. My instructors were Tom and Jack. Both were extremely nice, very competent, and fun to be around. The equipment was in good order. Our instructors smoothly taught us how to scuba dive over 3 days with learning all the PADI techniques. It was an awesome experience to be able to dive for the first time and I cannot wait to do my open water dives as my next step. I would definitely recommend AI Scuba to anyone who is looking to learn to scuba dive as you will not be disappointed! read more

I've always wanted to be a scuba diver. I've always thought of myself as a potential scuba diver. My limitations have been, in no particular order, living in a landlocked state, claustrophobia, a fear of losing my contacts, and an almost complete lack of buoyancy. Oh, and the fact that I somehow made it to adulthood without learning to tread water. I tried to take a scuba class in college and it didn't exactly work out; I would have been the first person ever to fail scuba if they failed students in scuba. But, my husband loves diving, and we had a trip to Belize planned, so I agreed to try again, this time at A-1. If you're like me-- basically an uncoordinated unbouyant wimp-- even you can learn to scuba dive at A-1. We took the PADI Scuba Diver course, which allows you to do most of your classwork online in advance, and then you can do all of your pool sessions at A-1 over the course of a weekend, and even your first two Open Water dives at the aquarium. The class was incredible; Aaron was a great instructor, and I always felt completely safe and ended up having a ton of fun. I learned a lot, and even when I had to repeat skills to get them figured out, Aaron never made me feel bad about it. If you ever have a chance to take a class with him, do it. Their facilities are great-- the pool is nice and warm, perfectly clean, and even has piped in music to listen to underwater. All equipment is provided for classes, but you're welcome to bring your own if you have it. A-1 is the only scuba center in America that can do open water dives in an aquarium, which is really convenient and actually pretty awesome. At the end of the class including the aquarium portion, you are a certified Scuba Diver, which means you only have to do two more dives to be an Open Water Diver. The class is expensive, but scuba is expensive anywhere, and the quality of instruction available here makes it completely worth it. I went into the class worried I would somehow manage to fail scuba, and now I'm trying to figure out when we can go diving again. Additionally, their store and rentals are pretty awesome. We rented BCDs for a week to take with us to Belize-- they were extremely high quality and we definitely felt safer knowing that we had equipment in good working order. The rental prices were very reasonable. We also bought a few other things, like snorkel clips and straps, and were very happy with the selection. I need new fins, and I'll definitely shop here to get them. I'm not how such an awesome scuba store ended up in our very non-coastal state, but I'm very happy they're here! read more

1st of 2 parts of this review: I wish I could give the appropriate rating of 5 STARS here, but I have to split the difference between 2 parts. As a new diver in 2016 I totally LOVED the shop, the inventory, the staff (at that time), the instructors, the classes, the facility, the travel, the charity work and outreach, the aquarium program, the May sale...all of it! A1 is definitely a one-stop-shop that encompasses SO many facets of the scuba world under one roof. A1 thoroughly educated and outfitted me from top to bottom starting with my Discover Dive in 2016 thru my Advanced Diver training in 2017. I couldn't have felt more prepared and confident as a diver. I loved all of my instructors; what awesome professionals!!! I traveled on my 1st trip with A-1 to Cozumel over New Year's 2016 and everything about the planning and execution was perfection. I absolutely adored every aspect of my experience (all except a poorly instructor-executed Advanced and Specialties Dive trip to the Blue Hole, NM that became MUCH improved after the first terrible night). The staff has turned over considerably since I started, to the detriment of the quality of customer service, but I no longer need much as an increasingly experienced diver. I've spent over $5k for total gear to date and more than that on 2 group trips. I was and in many ways remain their biggest fan and gave the most passionate marketing pitch for A-1 to everyone I met wherever I went! That is until...see Review #2... I stand by everything I wrote here to this day, but if after they read the 2nd Review I am no longer welcome, I will be sad but understanding. They will continue to get all of my business (except on group trips) if they'll have it. But the fault in Review #2 lies with them and feedback is important to growth. The intention here is to hopefully help them learn and grow. Now for the 1 STAR review to add: On my group trip with A-1 to Roatan, New Year's 2017, the trip guide on my boat hijacked my very 1st dive, literally spinning me around on the surface of the water and towing me back to the boat. I am an Advanced Diver. My dive buddy who was there was a Master Diver, now an Instructor. I and my buddy were taking time to descend due to my initial hypersensitive ears at the beginning of a dive trip. It takes me 1-2 dives to get my ears acclimated again. By the 2nd day, my dives were flawless and effortless. But on this day she chastised us for "hanging back" from the group, who were directly below us and advancing away on a drift dive that, should we have lost them, would have returned them on the exact path back to the boat, so we would have met them. The boat Divemaster knew exactly what we were doing because we explained it during the dive brief; he was below us and observing while also watching the group. The boat trip guide did not respect the Divemaster's presiding authority and judgement, or my and my dive buddies capabilities and judgement. I was not in distress nor needed to be schooled and managed. Afterward my dive buddy and I reviewed this with the Divemaster who concurred with our assessment. We also discussed it with the boat trip guide, who would hear none of it. Yet she is not even a certified Master Diver, much less a Divemaster. She then shared the event behind my back to everyone for the rest of the trip, driving a wedge within the group. After a very negative, harassing member of our group had bullied, ridiculed, and mocked me repeatedly throughout the trip as part of her natural personality as evident to all, I informed the lead trip guide, out of respect for him, to inform him of an inappropriate addition she had made to a group "thank you" chalkboard message that I and another trip member created with the group to resort staff, an addition that could potentially reflect negatively upon A-1, and us, in the eyes of the resort staff. Before I could even speak, he stopped me, yelling at me for being the problem. This was the first time he had been anything but the nicest guy to me or in my personal observation to anyone ever. I have heard rumors of his legendary temper being directed at staff, which was meant to explain the departure of so many of them from A-1. But his outburst triggered the most severe military service-connected PTSD episode I have ever experienced in 11 years since diagnosis. It is alarming that these two trip guides-- who are spouses-- would treat a guest, a paying client, this way; particularly when they pride themselves on their dedicated support to disabled veterans; not all wounds are visible. I also personally observed the male trip guide gossip to trip members about prior guests he disapproves of, which means paying clients enter scuba community gossip lore; this is slanderous and harmful to them who will likely again encounter the audience of these stories throughout their future travels within the scuba community. This behavior is unprofessional and should not be condoned, especially when paying for it. read more

This place is a Denver institution and beloved by many Denver residents. How has no one reviewed it before?! My boyfriend bought me scuba diving lessons for my birthday, which is how I came to fall in love with this place. He was very picky about the scuba center that he went through, and after lots of calls and visits to shops all over the Denver area, he finally settled on A-1. After taking the class, I can see why he picked A-1. I had an incredibly positive experience with my classes. Our instructor Joanne was top-notch and very energetic, and definitely knew her stuff. Everyone else who works there is super-friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, and can answer any and all questions you have. On top of that, their prices on their equipment are VERY fair, and they even give a discount to people who take their scuba classes through A-1. They have an extensive shop - the biggest I have seen in Denver - and their own pool that they conduct confined water dives in. They also have THE best repair shop in the area, and even repair gear sent in from other states who are not equipped with the correct tools. On top of that, they have a travel center full of lovely ladies who will coordinate a trip for you, whether scuba or otherwise. And every couple of months the shop does a large scuba trip that is usually all-inclusive and reasonably priced. Once my BF and I save up anough money, we are definitely doing a trip through A-1. And I wouldn't buy my gear anywhere else. Or take scuba classes anywhere else. Really, it's the only scuba shop I could ever need! They even put out snacks for customers, like brownies and lemonade :) That's just how nice and accommodating they are! read more

I had a great experience with dive instructor Andrew. Although I didn't have any reservations or fears beforehand, I think if I did, he would have fixed 'em quick. Comfort level and confidence boost for sure. Andrew also went out of his way for several members of the class to accommodate needs, including my own. Really responsive to calls and emails. All around great experience with Andrew. Also, both owners took time out of their day to stop by the class to introduce themselves, greet everyone, ask about their upcoming trips. It's rare to see that kind of customer service anymore. Great job by all. read more

Even though I am very happily married I have absolutely fallen in love with the guys at A-1! Scuba Steve (and Dan) was the best instructor, Mike can customize, build, or repair anything, Sean was very knowledgeable in the products/equipment and helped me pick exactly what I needed and wanted, and Eric has a way about him that makes you feel like you belong there; they are all just fantastic. I highly recommend; you'll be hooked for life! read more

I felt very unsafe during a dive with an instructor here and decided to let the manager know. The manager denied everything I had to say, became hostile, and threatening. I never heard from the owner after requesting a call. I wanted to make them aware of a potential problem and I wasn't looking to take it any further than a phone call. It's very unfortunate that this company cared more about avoiding a potential lawsuit than being open to hearing why a customer might not be feeling safe. Very poor customer service. read more

Love this place. I have taken numerous classes through A1 and the instructors are excellent. When we took a couple of classes in Florida, our instructor there commented about how solid our (husband and my) dive skills are. I attribute that to A1 all the way. Having taken another class with A1 this past weekend, and seeing what a hot, DANGEROUS mess a couple of other dive shops were (one of them being a Denver-based dive shop), I wouldn't recommend anyone else in Denver other than A1. A1 has a great retail shop. Very knowledgeable sales people that have never tried to oversell us. Meg and Ryan are awesome. We also let A1 handle our equipment service needs. Couple this with an onsite travel agency, and you really have a one-stop shop. read more
