not old school appreciation of local business. since 1991 I've bout all my weed eaters (2), mowers, trimmers, chain saws. few years ago the old man owner who took care of his clients retired and sold out. they no longer sell the Shindaiwa line and even though i bought it there they won't service it. You hate actually using your equipment and 3-6 week repair times prevent that. I dealt with the high prices, long repair waits, the snide- arrogance, and incompetence at the front desk for over 10 years... They were close and really the only game in town, and have been since 1984. Spent about $4500.00 over the years. After the tantrum the owner (the fat uneducated hillbilly with a white beard in back, who only comes up front when he lies or rips someone off) threw, I'm done. This place jumps over dollars to get to dimes and they won't tell you what their charging you for until AFTER they've done it. They inspected my machine twice, found nothing twice, and CHARGED ME TWICE! Guess what, machine still has the same problem! If you're a Stihl fan Ace in Lockeford is now a service/repair center. There's also options in Stockton, Galt, and Elk Grove. All with quicker service times and better prices. read more

This place is a JOKE! earlier this year in about April I dropped off my Stihl BR550 Blower. I bought the Blower from A1 about 13 years ago and it's ran great since. Recently it had issues running at full throttle, it would start fine but just couldn't get to full power. Life has been busy and I didn't have time to replace the carburetor myself. I'm a homeowner and have had many gas powered tools and I find that anytime I take my equipment in to be serviced 100% of the time they say there's some issue with the Carb. So usually ill just replace the Carb myself, but right now I just don't have time. I drop it off in April and they have a 8 week wait time for my blower to be looked at and that cost $80. After 8 weeks they get back to me with a $380 quote for a repair, that is just ridiculous. A new Blower is $550. I bring the blower home order a New Carb kit on Amazon that comes with the Carb, air filter, bulb, hoses fuel filters and everything else for $20. It takes me 1 hour to replace everything and I have limited experience small engine repair. After installing the new equipment it turned over with 3 pulls and runs perfect. How A1 came up with $380 is beyond me. Also when I took apart my blower it was fairly dirty, there wasn't one sign of them taking the blower apart to give an honest inspection of the machine. I did have to pay $80 for them to just look at the machine. This company just throws our ridiculous quotes to take advantage of people. Told not to come back. Had a chainsaw in because it was running poorly while cutting. When I picked up the saw I was told it was tuned up and fixed. On the first use the saw had the same problem still happening. Brought it back to the shop to have it actually repaired. After an estimate worth almost as much as the saw I decided to take back the saw. When I questioned being charged a second diagnosis fee after being charged the initial time( which was mis-diagnosed) I was bellowed at from the back to leave and not come back. First of all, I am not the kind of person who writes bad reviews. I just consider giving them the benefit of the doubt. However, I'm making an exception for this business and their F minus customer service. I used this business for the first time. IT WILL BE MY LAST TIME!!! Took my mower, blower and weed eater in for an annual tune up. When I took them in ALL 3 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT WERE WORKING ...just a tune up was needed. 2 1/2 weeks later (not a problem) they called and told me the mower and blower were ready ... not the weed eater. I went to pick them up. My mistake was not asking for the mower to be started before I took it home. When I got home and attempted to start the mower, which was working prior to my taking it in...IT WOULD NOT START. Called and told them. They asked that I bring it back in and it would be MOVED TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE. After one week later and numerous unreturned calls, I got notice that the mower was ready. Went in to pick it up ... asked them to start it (it started) and then was told how much I owed. I argued that the mower was working when I brought it in ... and questioned why there was a charge for a mower that was working fine. After what I think was the owner came out all HUFFED UP and told me "I'M TRYING TO BE NICE" I decided to pay and get the hell outta there ... along with my weed eater (minus the $25 deposit I had paid on it...not refunded) which to my disbelief I learned had not been worked on after being in their shop for 4 weeks!!! My little business won't hurt them at all ... but will be staying away for good!!!. I'll be taking my equipment elsewhere. Lesson learned. read more

My Dad does a lot of equipment repair for others. We went in with the intention of trying to assist a customer who had ordered the incorrect wheels from A-1. Our goal was to attempt to exchange a set of mower tires for the correct ones. The finger was not being pointed at anyone in particular, as to fault or blame for the order being incorrect. As we tried to explain that someone other than us had ordered the wheels and we did not have the receipt. The lady behind the counter was immediately confrontational and rude. While of course it is totally understandable that most businesses will not do an exchange or refund without a receipt, I was dumbfounded at the lack of pleasant explanation of this to my father. He is 70 years old and believes strongly in the old school ways of customer service as do I. This lady was exceptionally irate and literally yelling at us. She didn't care to listen at all that we were willing to just buy the new wheels altogether. After a few minutes, a Man entered from the back room and instead of trying to help resolve the issue or make a sale, he began furiously raging at us. I would never have believed what had taken place if I didn't witness it for myself. It is upsetting to try to support a small business and be treated with such lack common decency. From now on we will be taking our business to Acme where we are treated as humans. If zero stars or less were an option I'd have chosen that. read more

We purchased parts for our business back in December of 2013 and paid via credit card. We then returned the parts as we were sold parts for the wrong compressor unit. The mistake was on the part of A-1. We then followed up to receive credit back to our credit card. Despite calling and speaking to Elaine over and over again this was never done. The last time we spoke she told me she needed to talk to John and would call me back. I then left numerous messages and never received a return phone call. We do business with a lot of companies, and have never received such poor customer service. We are also planning to pursue a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. We have done everything in our power to resolve this in good faith. read more

Customer service is really fantastic. Went in looking for a Stihl trimmer, talked to one of the guys there who really knew his stuff. He took it in the back to get it all ready for me and then brought it out and explained startup and all the features of the unit. All the things I never get at the big box stores. I called A-1 Saw & Mower in Lodi, to see if they could fix my ExMark riding lawn mower since they are an ExMark dealer. I know they have a long wait time before they can see it, so I asked if I could make an appointment because I need my lawn mower every week and it's a big hassle for me to load it up into my pickup back and forth. The lady on the phone said that they don't take appointments. That I had to pay them $50 first for them to look at it and the will call me with a quote. I said I don't mind paying the $50 but I need the mower to mow my lawn and if they would call me when they have time to look at it, I would bring it in. She said their policy is for me to drop it off and they would call me when they get to it. I asked how long would that be? She said that they were a couple of weeks out. I again asked can I pay the $50 and make an appointment or can you call me when you are ready to look at it. She said that it's not their policy. I said you mean to tell me that I have to have my lawn mower sitting here for two weeks or more while my lawn gets overgrown? I said that they needed to change their policy to accommodate people like me that have riding lawn mowers that they need every week to mow their lawns. She said "We are not going to change our policy" and hung up on me. Now as a business owner I understand the need to follow rules but I also know that sometimes you should be able to accommodate a customer with their needs and be more understanding and at least try and come up with a happy solution. But by all means NEVER- NEVER-NEVER HANGUP ON A CUSTOMER. I don't care how bad YOUR day is going. Do not take it out on me. I was just trying to get my lawn mower fixed. I hope the lady on the phone is the owner of A-1 Saw & Mower because I would hate to have one of their employees treat a customer that way. I have two riding mowers and two push mowers and several power tools. I guess they have so much business that they don't need mine. And I am happy to accommodate. I for one will never do business with A-1 Saw & Mower and I hope you'll be number two. See how accommodating I can be!! Brought a trimmer in for starter repair. Didn't end up having them repair it. They explained normally fairly simple inexpensive fix, but of course my trimmer was a far more complicated and was going to cost more as a result. I had done some research prior to taking it in, to see if I could repair it myself. Well, my research told me it was a bigger project than I cared to attempt to take on, so I knew they weren't full of it. Ultimately I decided that rather than put money into this trimmer, I'd be better off investing in a new one. With that said, do not buy Troy Bilt trimmers. They're crap. I've never been real happy with this one, and now I really am not happy. Despite not having A-1 service the trimmer, I appreciated them for being up front and honest, setting my expectations, rather than just fixing it, taking my money, without allowing me to assess whether it was worth it. Honest people, I'd recommend them and go back to them in the future. read more

Took a troy bilt tiller here to have seals replaced, 3 seals were leaking oil, out of the 5 seals it has. I asked for an estimate and they charged me$ 50.00 just to look over and give me an estimate. 2 days later called me back and said it would cost $586.00 my jaw hit the floor, told them I could not afford that and would just pick it up. " I have bought this tiller two lawn mowers and many other parts and service from here over the years never had any problems in the past".Now I go to pick up tiller and asked for the estimate I paid $50.00 for to try to see what cost so much and and ended up getting kicked out of the store.found all parts on the Internet for under $40.00 they were definitely trying to rip me off and I guess they did for $50.00. they will not put anything on the estimate but your cost no parts or labor cost a bit shady read more

HORRIBLE-1 !!! I've been going to A1 Saw & Mower for years, buying equipment, having chains sharpened and buying parts and lawn care accessories. I was given a Craftsmen Mower/Trimmer and brought it in for A1 to evaluate if it was worth investing any money into or if I should buy a new one from them. Fred and I (the mechanic and guy running the front desk) had a lengthy discussion about how this would be used to manage my 5 acres and that if it wouldn't be reliable and reasonably as capable as the Aries Mower/Trimmer they sold there, I would rather just by a new one. Two weeks later I got a call that the Craftsmen Mower/Trimer was solid and ready to go. When I picked it up, Fred could not get it to start, but it looked like it was just flooded, so trusting them, I took it home... When I got it home, it took over 30 minutes and so many pulls on the starter, I lost count, but eventually, I got it started. However, gas was running out of the carburetor and it wouldn't stay running. I took another afternoon off work and took it back to A1. HORRIBLE-2 !!! A few weeks later, I get a call that the Craftsmen Mower/Trimmer is ready to go. According to A1, they installed parts in the carburetor upside down and that caused the gas to overflow and the engine not run. I brought it home, put string on it and started it up. The mower did start with about 3-4 pulls, but the RPM's varied up and down. I engaged the trimmer head and found there was no way to disengage it from spinning. None the less, I thought I'd test it out. In very short 4-6" new soft grass, it ran and cut the grass (although the RPM's still went up and down regardless of the load). When I tried to cut grass that was 6-12" high, the motor would struggle and eventually die (I ran it about 5 minutes in total). I called A1 and they asked me to bring it back in again (for the motor issue and the fact that it would not disengage the head). I took off from work again and took it back in. At this point I asked if we could just put the $160 dollars they charged for the tune up against the Aries Mower/Trimmer (we discussed this option when I first brought it into their shop). They asked me to give them 1 more chance to fix it. I'd been going there a long time, so I said ok. Later in the week I got a call and A1 said they had put the belt/pulleys on wrong and that a bracket was bent and that was causing it not to disengage, but did no work on the motor because it sounded fine to them (although they did say they had nowhere to test it under a load. When I went to pick it up, they wanted to charge me another $25 because they said I might have caused the issue when I tested it. They were rude, insulting and very aggressive when I said I didn't believe they should be charging me anything on the 3rd return when they did not work on the motor (which was the main issue) and the head engaging/disengaging was supposed to be fixed as part of the initial work. The owner came out and tried to intimate me that I was lucky he didn't charge me more and refused to address the fact that I did not authorize any additional cost on this mess. None the less, they refused to do anything but yell at me. I paid the $25 and left. When I got home, I started the Craftsmen Mower/Trimmer and the RPM's still vary up and down and it still dies under any normal use. A-1 Saw & Mower is the closest shop to me, but I will NEVER return and Highly suggest that buyer beware that their mechanical ability is VERY POOR, their commitment means nothing and the only thing worse than their mechanic is their service and ethics!!! read more

This is the finest business for help with any yard tool. I've been given the customer service time where they just educate me on products. I need this personal one on one service because I don't know what to buy. I'm Intelligent but you can be intelligent in many areas but unless your Family Business is this trade, there's no way to have their expert experience. I am now going t purchase a large electric chain saw from them. I'm getting to old to play with the gas chain saws. the technology in the new electric saws means I don't lose any power. I can actually get more done because it's essentially, a plug and play tool. I will never go back to the Manteca or Tracy mower shops. They are arrogant and have no true CARE for YOU + their prices are high. Home Depot is nice but A 1 Saw is my new partner for everything. I will buy my Son and Son in Law tools for Christmas from this store. I'm retired Law Enforcement so I write bluntly but I'm honest. I am in no way related to anyone in this business. These small family owned businesses are disappearing so, while this one is available and not eat-ten u by a Big-Box Store, I will go here, I pray you do also. read more

I live in Lathrop and the two Law & Garden & Saw businesses (one in Manteca and one in Tracy) are local to me but for over two decades, I never got anything but arrogance from them but, I needed their services. I found A1 Saw (In Lodi) two years ago and I have been tremendously impressed. They're a family owned business and the highest quality work and personal guidance is the normal way of business. I'm retired Law Enforcement and I highly recommend this business. Even if you can get something cheaper at a big box store, consider that we "America" needs to support these small family owned and operated businesses or, one day, we will not have any. It's a long drive for me but I have learned about different products and have had every piece of equipment that I bought up to this business serviced better than the local area shops ever did and my equipment works like new. Even if you lived up North in Sacramento or far South in Modesto, going to A1 in Lodi will become a way of life for you, as it has been annually for me. Thank you. God bless. read more

I came to A-1 saw and brought a 18 in chainsaw bar and a 18 in chain saw chain so they can get me a replacement chain.the guy gave me a chain without sizing it up and told me this is the one I need.i went home I live an hour away went to install the chain it was a 16 in chain so it didn't fit.i called A 1 saw and spoke with the guy who sold it to me and told him I received the wrong chain.he told me to bring it back and they will exchange it no problem and apologize to me.i explained to him I live an hour away and was wondering if my wife can pick it up at 510 after she gets off of work so I don't have to drive 1 hour each way and not have to spend 35 in gas.he told me that they close at 5 and couldn't do that I then began to explain to him that I didn't bring a measurement to him I brought a bar and a chain so he would be able to make sure it was the right chain replacement for me and that he made the mistake. I asked him since the mistake was on you can they please stay open only 10 extra minutes his response was no they close at 5.i know I could of checked the chain and I know people make mistakes we are only human. But what really bothers me is that they couldn't go out of there way for 10 min to help me out.im going to return the chain and take my business else ware along with all my family's business. read more
