I love 9th Island Grill, and this is the only location I've been to for it. Depending when you come, the shopping area can be a nightmare, but it's always worth it to me. All of my interactions with the ladies who work there have always been very pleasant and they get me out pretty quickly for how fresh everything is. This last time Jennifer was the one to help me out. I always order the 9th Island poke bowl with tuna and an extra side of sauce and it never disappoints. The tuna always tastes amazing and every single time I forget how big the bowl is. I like to get the extra sauce because there's a good amount of rice in there, and it can be pretty dry since the sauce is all up top. The flavor combos are wonderful and I could eat this every week. We walked in and the place was empty at 5pm. Dining area was filthy! Tables and floor dirty. Trash cans were full! Last time we came it was dirty too. I ordered the poke nachos. Amazing as usual. Kid had a poke bowl. They weren't thrilled with the steaming hot rice and the cold toppings. Last time was the same. The girls working had disgustingly dirty tan crocs on that were just gross. A man from the back comes out in front to berate him in front of guests talking about a ticket that said "no rice, no nothing" the cashier followed him back to the kitchen where I could still here this man speaking loudly at this kid. This to me is so disrespectful. We will for sure not return, and this is a regular spot for us. It was someone in the kitchen, taller African American, older not the younger one. Visited again on a Sunday night to give it another shot as Josh invited us back to make things right. We decided to dine in and got the chicken katsu, seared ahi tuna plate, tonkatsu ramen and the loco moco along with 5 Hawaiian Sun drinks. My kiddo was bummed as the egg on his loco moco was already cracked. Doesn't matter to me but it may for others as it did for him. Other than that, my kid enjoyed the loco moco and I liked the roasted garlic garnish. My partner said his ahi tuna steak was stringy and didn't enjoy it. I thought it was alright and quite enjoyed the tangy flavored mustard dip. The rice was dry but not hard like last time. The tonkatsu ramen was flavorful and they give a good amount of chasu but the meat was tougher than I like. My other kiddo finally got to enjoy the chicken katsu and said it was good but thought the katsu sauce was ketchup. Our free entrees that Josh comped us were the chicken katsu and loco moco. Thanks for making it right, Josh! The dining room was clean and the two servers were friendly. We noticed that most parties coming in were getting açaí bowls. The flavor has been consistent across my last few visits. I still find their BBQ chicken overly marinated. If it weren't the only thing my son eats here, I wouldn't order it. However, the Spicy Garlic Chicken is good. I wish it were spicier, but I understand why they keep it as it is. The service is okay. Second visit to the 9th Island Grill, and we were much happier than our first visit! Still got carry out food, but much happier with the choices and results! The staff continues to be amazing - friendly and helpful! This time we tried the Garlic chicken plate - crispy and very tasty. The garlic sauce can be a little sweet for our taste, but the chicken itself was great; and the extra crispy chicken skin makes this dish! Also got the Loco Moco - the eggs don't travel great all the way home, but the dish is very tasty and serving size is huge! Lastly we tried the Tonkatau Ramen - this was good even taking it home! This was our 2nd visit to this location. The 1st time we both ordered the bowls with chicken, and they were amazing! Based on our 1st experience, we went back and tried the two meat plate. Maybe it was an off night, but the BBQ chicken tasted burnt and the garlic chicken was way too hard. Also, the macaroni salad is very bland. I placed a catering order on Friday evening around 6:22 pm for a half pan of BBQ chicken, scheduled for Saturday pickup at 3:30 pm. When I arrived on Saturday at the scheduled time, a woman working there insisted that I had someone already picked up the order on Friday, which was absolutely not true. Another worker eventually brought out the half pan of BBQ chicken, so the order did exist after all. I then asked for teriyaki sauce to go with the chicken. The worker checked with the same woman, and then told me that they don't provide teriyaki sauce with catering orders because they only have the sauce in small containers and my order is to big to receive any teriyaki sauce. I'm honestly confused -- what kind of Hawaiian BBQ place doesn't provide sauce, especially for a catering order? Between the incorrect pickup accusation and the refusal to include sauce, the experience was frustrating. There are far better Hawaiian food options out there. Today I ordered the mixed steak and fish plate because I was craving salmon, but I was nervous it wasn't going to be good. The beef was delicious as always, but the salmon was a little dry and lacked flavor. I also tried the Peachy PB smoothie and I liked it. It tastes like most shakes with PB. I do like how they have reusable plates. It shows they are trying to conform to greater sustainability and that's definitely a good thing. Now it was pricey. We paid approximately $55 for 1 shake, 1 fountain drink, and 2 steak and fish plates. I feel $40-45 would be more reasonable. Service was average, but the tables were a little dirty and they didn't have anyone wiping any of the tables down. I went in today and the food was decent but the shorter girl Journey has too much attitude. First she has the headphones in not entirely giving you her attention when taking your order and gives dirty looks when I selected "no tip" and told me the receipt will be in the bag instead of just giving it to me. She also put the wrong name on the order so they were calling a different name with my order so I had to confirm it was mine. The other girl at the front that gave me my order had to go back into the computer and print my receipt for me because Journey didn't give me my receipt, even though the people who ordered after me were given theirs.
