first time trying this bbq spot and it was good overall! we ordered the pork belly bites and they were delicious! tender, smokey, fatty, and spicy. i wish there was just a little less sauce on them. for mains, we got the combo platter with ribs and brisket, corn nuggets, and sweet potato puffs. the brisket was super tender and juicy! the ribs were smokey and not completely fall off the bone and had a bite to them. which i personally like. the only part of the meal which didn't like was the meat dressed up in sauce. i personally like it on the side. my wife thought the pork belly bites and her pulled pork sandwich tasted old but it tasted fine to me. pulled pork was tender. my favorite part of the meal was probably the sides. those fried corn nuggets were to die for! as well as the sweet potato puffs. overall it's a good bbq spot. service was great but it's not particularly my favorite style of bbq but still satisfies that bbq craving. read more

Ate lunch here. Staff were very friendly and attentive. No complaints on service. I ordered a 1/2 chicken plate with a salad and baked beans. Also, ordered a couple of ribs just to try. Roasted chicken tasted OK...seemed like it was cooked yesterday and reheated. The beans were good, salad good and the ribs were delicious. Ribs are St.. Louis style and decent in size. I got hot bbq sauce on the side and was very pleased with the taste and heat. Would go back for the ribs or to try the pork and brisket. Chicken is a no go for me though! Ordered a pint of ranch; very very good ranch. - CREAMED CORN NUGGETS 10/10 this is my favorite thing in Destin FL. Got 2 orders so 40 NUGS. They went quick so I recommend getting 3-4 orders - Slaw is not soupy it is perfect. I like how it's chopped too. - Potato salad came in a quart and was gone in 30 mins. This is a small barbecue place located in a small strip mall that gets pretty filled. Service is good. Our server was attentive and my iced tea stayed filled. The good was OK. Nothing special, but nothing terrible. It was OK. I ended up going with the gator sausage po' boy with onion rings as my chosen side. The gator sausage was decent, though kind of disappeared in the bun. A bit small, though it did foll me. The onion rings that accompanied it were typical pre-made onion rings obviously bought from a restaurant supply house. A few of the people that I went with opted for burgers and those looked decent and they said that the burgers were good. We chose this restaurant because it was convenient. If it is convenient for you and convenience is a factor in picking where you will be dining, this is a decent choice. read more

I yelped BBQ while down on the Florida Gulf Coast and found 98 BBQ. I suggest you find it too! First of all, the decor is decorated with sports banners, flags, etc. My kind of place. My waitress reccomended ribs and brisket with beans and I picked potato salad. The ribs had a chargrill taste and they were super tender. The brisket was perfect. It was not dry and it also tender with a fantastic smoky taste. I should have ate them both without sauce because that's how good the ribs and brisket were. The potato salad was also phenomenal as it was the baked potato variety with some kind of conglomeration of sour cream and chives. I did find 2 disappointments though. First of all, the beans seemed to be doctored Bush beans. I really wish I would know why the waitress reccomended them. But the other disappointment was the sauces. Actually, the sauces tasted really good. There are 3 sauces - a sweet vinegar type, a supposedly hot vinegar type that tasted black peppery and might habe a heat rating of 3, and a Carolina mustard. The problem is that none of those sauces went well with the brisket or ribs. The sauces were too thin. You need a thicker sauce for brisket and ribs. Next time, I will get the pulled pork because it seems like that is what the sauces were made specifically for. The pulled pork would soak them up the sauce. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Give Highway 98 BBQ a try. Order the pulled pork and use the sauces or order the brisket and ribs and be pleased without the sauces. The potato salad is highly recommended but nothing special about the beans. read more

Food smelled good but pork belly bites were hard as rocks. Others in our group said ribs & okra was good. Fries weren't very hot. Had to ask for refills and wasn't asked before plates were removed from table and wasn't asked if we wanted dessert but others were.. idk I guess a toss up depending on what you order and who waits on you. read more

Being from Texas I was supposed the kids wanted BBQ in Florida. We are glad they did. You grab an open seat and it's a good atmosphere at the same time has high bench seating for privacy. We got the 4 person meal with 3 meats, really enough for 6-8ppl. We had enough leftovers for a second meal. Onion rings were crisp with good flavor. Cheese sticks were average. Ribs and moist brisket were very good. Pulled pork was not our favorite but decent. Just not a lot of flavor. The BBQ sauce is very good, we got some to go. Love it! I got the beef brisket my husband got the bbq platter. Pulled chicken and ribs. The food was sooo good. There is no place I know of in the DC area to get anything close to good bbq. This review is really hard for me but I have to be honest. I've come here for years and absolutely love the staff and the hospitality. The sides are amazing but when it comes to the BBQ itself... it's really lacking. I've tried every meat they have on the menu and there are one or two decent options. The ribs are pretty good. But what you'll notice is that none of them have a really solid smoke infused flavor to them, they almost have the texture of something that's been steamed for a portion of the cook time. The biggest offender for me and what has driven me to the point of writing this review is the Brisket. It's the most horrendous brisket I've ever tasted ... and I'm from New York. It's dry, it's incredibly tough, and the bark on the outside is non existent. When you do the drape test over your finger, it doesn't even give at all which tells me it's not smoking long enough and or they're goosing the temp to shorten the cook time, either way is going to not give the meat enough time to loosen up and become tender. The lack of bark is also troubling, I get it's not meant to be Texas style, but there should be at least some bark forming in the outside. I can't tell you how sad I was when I bit into that brisket. A part of me might have even shed a tear. I get it, bbq is very subjective and everyone's got their preferences. There may even be people that come on here and rave about their brisket. I just know that based on my visits to their venerable establishments, our friends from Texas or Kansas City wouldn't be fans either. If it was on the BBQ alone, it would be a zero star, but because the staff is so wonderful, I gotta at least give it two stars. read more

I've been here 3 times and am disappointed, at least in respect to the reviews. The first visit a year ago was really really good! The past two times the brisket has been far too dry and sliced a bit too thin for my liking. Our recent visit was not good across the board, none of the food was that great, I guess the slaw and potato salad were decent? Really just standard though, both the rib tips and brisket were waaay too dry and my mother didn't even eat as her order was incorrect and we needed to head out. I still am a bit baffled by this given my first visit and how well 98 is generally reviewed, perhaps staffing changes? Maybe I've just been on some bad days, who knows, but one good visit and two bad ones comes out to 3 stars. I will likely wait a bit and come back given I'm now local for good and like BBQ. read more

This is a local hidden gem! We've been here on spring break for a few days, had our fill of seafood and wanted some good bbq. So glad we found this place on Yelp. We had the brisket and the smoked chicken salad with fries and onion rings. Brisket was cooked perfectly, moist and so flavorful. The smoked chicken salad was delicious and had just the right amount of Smokey flavor. Fries are fresh cut and we asked for extra crispy on those and the onion rings. Really really good bbq! The "feast for 4" is a great value with portions big enough for more than 4. Brisket and pulled pork were especially wonderful, and fries were surprisingly good. We made a large delivery order through Grub2Go and had some issues. The restaurant manager was really prompt and friendly in getting back to us and helping to resolve the issue. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area- but will probably dine in. :) read more
