I started coming to The Shop ever since CJ moved over. Once you find that perfect barber, you follow them wherever they go. I live on the South Shore, but I drive up to Somerville just to see CJ! CJ is perceptive to both the client's desires and also what will look good for each person. He clearly communicates what he plans to do, and he will pause to confirm your approval before continuing if it's a new look for you. This is THE most important quality in a barber, because I might have an idea for my haircut/beard trim in my mind, but the barber may see it differently. And now, since I completely trust CJ's judgement, I could walk in and say "Do whatever you want" and I wouldn't worry at all. It was CJ's judgement that led to my current beard style, and looking back it was obviously the right choice. If you need a new barber and don't know where to go, book CJ at either of The Shop locations. I've been going to CJ for years, so the move to The Shop was a no-brainer. Now I have a kid, and CJ cuts his hair, too - super convenient to get both done with one trip. My kid already had a few haircuts done before going to CJ, and CJ is amazing with kids. All the barbers in the place are respectful when we're there - they even sometimes change the music playlist to be kid-friendly, which is an awareness I really appreciate as a parent. The place is clean and welcoming, and the staff are efficient. Street parking is easy enough for the amount of time a haircut would take. I highly recommend CJ and 968 The Shop! read more

I made my appointment with Larry at the Billerica new location. Wow, what a nice spot they have over there. Warm and welcoming environment, everything you look for when you go to get a cut! Larry was awesome, he told me all about the new location and the older location they also have in Somerville. I got a bald fade and a beard trim and line up. Super clean and sharp job Larry did. I checked out their instagram page as well. Nothing but clean haircuts from all their barbers. Would definitely recommend this barber shop to anyone near or far, worth the ride. I went in to get a quick clean up before a wedding. I made it very clear that I had been growing my hair out for months and only wanted a short trim and nothing off the top. The barber said "guys dont usually know what they want" and proceeded to take the buzzer to the back of my head. He took off at least two inches and faded the sides. To be fair to him the cut is pretty good for a fade but absolutely did not listen to what I asked and now I have short hair for the wedding. read more

Literally worst haircut I have ever received. The barber did not do what I asked and gave me a horrible cut. Buzzing my head. I asked him to clean up the sides and take about an inch off the top. He proceeded to chop at least 3 inches off the top and mutilate the sides to the point where I now resemble an uglier and less successful version of Ellen DeGeneres. The cut is pretty uneven all around and he left the back way too long so it can grow into a fucked up mullet. As a side note, the culture in the barbershop was pretty uncomfortable. At one point, all of the barbers stopped what they were doing to stare at a woman running by and talk about her ass. Overall terrible experience. Never going here again. read more

Amazing service! My son has been going to see Larry since he was 5-6 years old. Larry is relatable to my son and now his friends go see Larry. Mason is now 12 and tells Larry what style hair cut he wants. He always deliver!! We usually go to Somerville, however with his new shop in Billerica opening it was a must to visit. Got a cut here for first time, new to the area. Barber snipped my gold chain I had on and I could clearly feel it during the haircut but figured it couldn't have been that bad if he blatantly hit the chain with the buzzer and didn't say anything about it. Potentially it wasn't snipped to the point that it completely broke, but it was hit with the buzzer enough that when I walked home chain fell off and lost it. Average cut. Asked for bald fade, it was sort of bald but not clean. Very expensive haircut with an average result plus if you go here know not to wear any jewelry at all because if they hit it with the buzzer they will not notify you. read more

I have been coming to this shop for the last 6 months and love it! Tim has been my barber, and he's killed it every time. He's always flexible and willing to make time to squeeze me in. There's a huge sign that says Walk Ins Welcome, but this place is always hopping, so you should probably call ahead first. I had gone here some there times in a row, walked in got my head shaved and a beard trim by the same guy. Fourth time I went in, my guy wasn't there but owner was and started telling me how they don't do walk-ins, appt only, arguing as if i was making it up. He asked who cut my hair and he laughed and started bad mouthing him in front of a shop full of guys. I have been going to Paul for the past couple of months and he has been the best Barber that I have had in the Somerville area since moving here 4 years ago. He can keep up with conversation or just do his thing depending on how social you feel. He gets it and can get you cut up just the way you want it. Relaxing atmosphere, good vibes, and professional. I'm generally extremely wary of trying out new barbershops, but my hair was getting to a critical mass and I had to act. I found this place on Yelp and I couldn't have been happier with my cut! I have super curly hair that can be a bit unwieldy, but Tim managed to really do a great job getting my situation under control. I recently moved to Somerville after nearly a lifetime in Miami, and I just happened to live by this barbershop. As it turns out, this place gave me a better haircut consistently than any other place I went to in Miami. Everyone is incredibly nice and friendly, they charge a fair price for their haircuts, and it's incredibly simple to book an appointment. I will say that I suggest you call ahead instead of walking in because that just seems to be what most people do here. Truly the best compliment I can give this place is that after nearly 5 years of dating, my fiancee finally started to like my haircuts once I started getting my haircut here. read more

Larry is absolutely excellent and the only one I've found in the Somerville area who can do a military haircut the right way (being a Marine probably helps). The others there are also really good. Though they allow walk-ins, you're better off calling ahead or expecting to wait a little bit. It's worth the wait! If you really hate waiting, go to super cuts, then go home, throw a hot pocket in the microwave and eat off a paper towel, because clearly quality isn't high on your list of priorities. Fantastic place. I walked in and even though most of them were booked, they found some time to get me in. My barber (Will) took the time to hear what I wanted, and checked in regularly to see how I felt about the cut as it went on. Been getting my monthly hair cuts here since September. Holli is always great- very thorough. Will also cut my hair once, and it was great too! Conversation is always entertaining. The first time I was there, we had to teach Larry Jr how to charge his car key, the second was about the enjoyment of Justin Beiber music, the third was about an (unwarranted lol) fear of the Zika virus. I find it hard to find a barber or hair dresser that can get my hair exactly as I want it. I have been experimenting with different places all around the city and no-one gets it right. This place opened up right near my apartment so I decided to give them a shot. The FIRST time I was there they gave me exactly what I was looking for. They are artists. Rather than follow what you tell them to the letter, they hear you, get a sense of what you are going for and execute it well. Been here several times now for my regular hair cuts. The prices are fair. I usually have Tim cut my hair and have always had a good experience. They also do a straight razor shave on your neck line which is nice. The shop has a great atmosphere and some of the conversations are hilarious. Think you generally have to be some kinda nutcase or a real sicko to actually leave yelp reviews but this place is so good I had to. Been looking for a consistently great barbershop in the Cambridge Boston Somerville area for over a decade now and finally found it. They cut my hair like Ryan gosling every time, a chick at the bar even said it too (she looked like she had been drinking for about 12 hrs at that point but she said it). I've had an uncomfortable and poor experience overall at this barbershop. For example, I've seen a barber eat jelly doughnuts with their bare hands and then cut someone's hair right after without even washing their hands other than wipe them with a dry paper towel. They can also make you wait a really long time if they're running behind, even with an appointment. It's also hard to get an appointment the same day or sometimes even a day or two in advance with certain barbers. I never know when to call! In terms of the environment and overall experience based on the times I've been, it can get pretty trashy and rough at times in my opinion. While waiting and while getting my haircut, I mostly heard the barbers talking about sports and sometimes women (including TMI topics about personal sexual stories), along with some (sometimes) obscene rap music going on in the background. Sometimes, you do hear comments that can be regarded as offensive and disrespectful, and that should definitely have no place in the workplace and, specially, one that receives customers/clients all day. That just shouldn't be tolerated. If you're a typical "bro" though, you might not mind this place after all, and I agree with other reviews here that there seems to be a "clique." Of course, it's a shame that it's not more welcoming, diverse, and respectful in that sense. I think it's important to watch for those things so that every customer feels comfortable and welcomed. Also, if you want your haircut or beard in a specific way, I think you're better off liking it the first try like the way it's cut or done because you may get a major attitude from certain barbers for asking them to fix it for you, or if you need the extra help to figure out what works best. That's at least what happened to me when I tried to ask to fix something to my liking or if I wasn't sure at first. This is not a place to get suggestions or to consult, so it seems like you do need to be sure about what you want and say it in a way they'll understand too (I thought that was part of their job, to make sure you're happy with your haircut/service). Overall, in my opinion, this place didn't provide the quality service for what they charge. I thought their haircuts weren't bad at all at some point and they've been around for a while too so it's obviously a shame. They've had good Yelp reviews too, but it's definitely not the professional service I'd expect based on my experiences, and on top of that, seems pricier for the area (it's in Somerville, not the city). I do hope it can improve its service though but it's obviously hard to change a work culture just like that so it's tricky. In the meantime, at least there are other options just walking distance from this place! read more
