We were driving through from CO to Texas and I'm glad we stopped in! They now have indoor seating as well as outdoor. The waitresses were really sweet. The salsa was so so good and pretty spicy! I got the green chili cheese quesadillas and they had a 1/2 order it was perfect for me (I ate them with the salsa and some ranch and it was very tasty). My brother got the crispy chicken salad and it was really good, the ranch is pretty awesome. And my mom got the 87 burger without the buns and she added green chili, jalapeños, and cheddar cheese it was really good too! I'm currently driving from Oregon to Odessa, Tx and I stopped here in Clayton for gas. I decided to grab a bite to eat before I continued on the road. I saw 87 Restaurant across the street from the Loves fuel station. I pulled in to park just as a couple of other travelers were showing up as well. It was right about 3pm. When I sat down we all waited for about 10 minutes while the staff seemed to be coordinating. I don't think they were expecting this mid afternoon rush. Once they got their game plan squared away they hustled like crazy to get everyone's orders and get them out to us as quickly as possible. They also have the best salsa I've had at a restaurant in a long time. I ordered the 87 burger with bacon, sautéed mushrooms, and green chile's. Unfortunately they don't have bleu cheese crumbles but the waitress said she could bring me some bleu cheese dressing. I went for that. The burger was awesome! Cooked perfectly. The bacon was top notch thick bacon. Everything about it was awesome! My only complaint would be the lack of bleu cheese crumbles but the dressing was fine. The staff was really great at serving and at being friendly with the customers. I'm really glad I decided to stop for a quick lunch. The staff of 87 Restaurant are doing their town, their state, and their profession proud. To the staff: keep up the great work! This was totally worth the stop! Driving from Colorado to Texas looking for the best place to have lunch halfway on our 10 hour drive. The previous reviews convinced us to stop here and everything was delicious! Enchiladas, BLTs, grilled cheese, French toast, pork chops, salads and grilled ham and cheese. We all left full and happy! Casual restaurant that serves American/Mexican food and it was better than expected. The Tuscan chicken sandwich was really good- more like a chicken Philly with lots of cheese. The beef quesadilla was average. Our server was very attentive. They also have beer and a few wines to drink if you want alcohol. Was happy to see an alternative to DQ and Pizza Hut for dinner on a Sunday night while traveling back to Austin. They have a typical diner menu with Mexican dishes as well. The kids wanted grilled cheese and the adults all ordered beef enchiladas with Christmas sauce, half red and half green sauce. The green sauce was just under nuclear but had a great flavor. The kids enjoyed their grilled cheese and the service was good as well. I only rated 3 stars because the ground meat in the enchiladas was a bit on the crispy side and homemade beans had good flavor but a bit dry. Talked to a couple of locals eating there who said it was normally really good. We'll definitely try again on future trips. read more

Looks like a small-town highway diner, and that's generally a good thing. Inside was clean and comfortable. Huevos Rancheros - I got it with the green chili sauce which was excellent. Beans, though, lacked flavor and the potatoes seemed like they'd been frozen. Chicken alfredo - Both kids said that it was a bit bland. Just generally lacked flavor. Portion was sufficient for a substantial meal. Taco plate - Taco was alright, not the best. Rice was either reheated or underdone, as it was hard or didn't seem fully-cooked. Crispy chicken salad - Salad was mediocre. Chick-Fil-A salad is better. If I went back on another trip through here, I'd probably stick with enchiladas, because the green chili sauce was exceptional. read more

What a missed opportunity for a good restaurant. The place is small, but it's very clean and well decorated. The waitress was very friendly too. Stopped in on a Thursday night and the place was DEAD (completely empty) - not a good sign. We were staying in the motel across the street so we wanted something convenient. Here's the problem, this is not a locally owned hidden gem with some little old lady or seasoned grill cook working in the back. Everything tasted like it came straight off a big generic food delivery truck and they simply heated it up. No made from scratch anything, no seasoning beyond salt and pepper and no reason to ever come back. This place would be packed if it truly cooked real food, but sadly it's a 'heat and eat' place. Not many choices in this town. I recommend the Goldfathers pizza next door at the gas station (seriously). Hard pass on this one until they learn to cook from ingredients, not preprepared boxes. Heck they don't even make any homemade desserts! read more

We arrived in town around 8:30pm and was thankful to see this restaurant was still open on a Monday night. My husband had the 87 burger small with fries, my son, (picky eater) had French toast (which for some reason he did not remember having before, probably because at home we call them square pancakes ), and I had the breakfast burrito! We all enjoyed our meals and had leftovers. The next morning our son wanted to stop by and order the French toast to go but they weren't open at the time we left town. read more

This is probably the worst small restaurants I have experienced traveling!!! I love small towns -restaurants & local fare! Wow....never been so disappointed! Since it was Tex/Mex I was hoping for a taco salad, etc something light, flavorful but not to hot. They had fish tacos -requested they take contents of taco and put it on greens/salad rather than in a shell. Server seemed to have a bit of an attitude about my request. Served per my request & it looked good. Into my 3rd bite my mouth was on fire!! I thought I had just gotten a small pocket of jalapeño & tried to continue to eat. Upon looking it appeared there was a WHOLE jalapeño- including seeds. I love hot & spicy food but this was awful!! Server finally came back & I told her my meal was so hot I couldn't eat it! She said she was sorry & brought check. It is hard to understand why a restaurant would serve something SO HOT that the average person couldn't eat much less finish!! We stopped here for lunch on a Sunday. It was extremely busy and there were only two waitresses. It took a while to get a seat because so many tables were dirty and they needed to clean one off and there were a few other folks waiting also. We took this as a good sign. We were wrong. There is pretty much nothing else open for a sit down restaurant that isn't fast food on Sunday's is my guess. There were five of us and we ordered: 2 fettuccini Alfredo's that come with dinner salads, 2 cheeseburgers with fries, cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. They advertise to specialize in southwest flavor. So I expected the enchiladas to be tasty. It's a bit difficult to mess up cheese enchiladas. We were served complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was amazing. Very good. I can see why they sell it by the pint with chips for $9.99 - and it would be worth it. When our meals came - the cheeseburgers were not good. Tasted like an average hospital cafeteria burger. Overpriced for the lack of flavor. Fries were hand cut and the ones that were cooked through were very good but they didn't leave them down long enough so many of the thicker ones were too firm. The Alfredo was decent for what you would expect at a rural cafe but our salads never came. The enchiladas were awful. Do NOT get the 'red' sauce. The corn tortillas were uncooked and firm. The cheese itself was good and the green chile sauce was very good. Rice and beans were average. We never got any refills either. The staff was nice and the restroom was clean. read more

There was too much mildly flavored sauce on my plate, however, this is New Mexico, not Texas. Very crowded, but has an outdoor area too (good for kids). You can order an extra patty. The burgers are juicy & perfectly cooked. The extreme breakfast burrito is "extreme"-ly delicious & gigantic. The food is well worth the price. The food is great, and restaurant is clean. The server was kind, but everything was slooooow. I've been here twice over the course of several months. Both times we sat down and waited awhile for anyone to come by with menus and get drink orders. Both times several groups of locals came in after we sat down and got menus, then drinks, and then food before us. (I knew they were locals because the server knew them by name each time). I'd love for them to get their act together because the food is great and it's a good place for a stop, but I don't have time to sit and wait for an hour. They're obviously able to move quicker, it seems that it's only for locals. The food is 5 stars, but the service knocks them down to 3. read more
