I'm from California so I'm really picky about Mexican food. This place did not disappoint absolutely fire

So expensive and our food was pretty greasy. Restaurant wasn't the cleanest either. Definitely won't even be stopping in again.

Chili rellenos and tacos were delicious. Small town what else can I say. It was only 2 restaurants open and both had Mexican.

Not impressed at all. It's run down, the floor was sticky-greasy. The only thing they did was bring food. No service at our table. I was creeped out by the cleanliness. My husband's choice for lunch. Wow, surprisingly great tacos!! Was a bod worried when I first pulled up but it was what was open. I had quesabirria, pork carnitas, and barbacoa tacos. Not bad at all, especially in small town Oklahoma. I'd go back. read more

Wow! If you want a hearty New Mexico welcome, stop here! Breakfast burrito fantastic with beautiful salsa bar and lots of egg and sausage in the burrito. Smothered asada burrito was indeed smothered in array of lettuce, tomato, cheese and green sauce. a meal for two. We are back in the land of chili and everything was authentic and delicious. I give this 3 stars because one of our meals (the smothered burrito) was pretty good. The juevos rancheros were a total flop and tasted more like egg enchiladas. They were not good. Came in not expecting the world, leaving feeling like it could have been worse, but it also could have been much better. Service was alright, has indoor and out side seating. Stopped here on the way to and back from the northwest. Authentic tacos and condiment table. On the way back they just closed and i just about begged to make 3 tacos as I was thinking about them for hundreds of miles to Clayton NM. The man opened the door up and took my order with what they had available and I enjoyed the outside sunset dining with deer aproacking from next door. The inside of the place is clean and flamboyant . Being from Texas, I see alot of Mex or TGex Mex places . This one had the killer sauces that were not shy of flavor . As a South Texan, I did not expect to find real, good Mexican food North of San Antonio. This is an excellent hole-in-the-wall taqueria and that is the only kind of taqueria that is truly authentic. Don't expect anything fancy, expect good food. IYKYK. The sweet lady working was by herself and made us all four meals within twenty minutes. The nachos were crisp and piled high with meat, beans, and cheese. The burrito and street tacos were perfect and tasted fresh. Even the grilled cheese and fries tasted great. We were super impressed and felt right at home. The kitchen is easy to see and it was clean. For the bad or critical food reviews, look where those people are from. read more

we showed up at closing time and the younger woman was nice enough to open the door and take an order to go. There was a police officer there from Clayton police department, enjoying a meal and we chatted briefly. The older lady of the two was in the back and we watched as she skillfully prepared delicious Chile rellenos dinners. These two women had worked all day and had time to be pleasant and helpful to two weary travelers. Please OVERTIP, they work HARD and take pride in it. Stopped here driving to Colorado. The lady working (the only person there) was working SO hard but they were out of rice, avocado (guac) and ice. It's not clean inside and the bathrooms aren't clean either. The food came out fairly fast given the circumstances and the portions were huge, but it was also pricy. Stopped on a family road trip. Food was great! My 12yr old says "I give it 5 Stars!" Kids both ordered burgers. One for bacon cheese burger and the other a plain cheeseburger. They were delicious old fashioned burgers. Each burger came with a generous portion of seasoned fries. The adults got burritos per the recommendation of the young girl working. Burritos were also fantastic. You can ask for a plate for crispy tortillas and salsa. We'd 100% eat here again. I'd be inclined to get a burger next time. 2 of 4 of us were greatly disappointed with our meals today. The 2 that ordered enchiladas were very happy with their meals. 1 of us ordered tacos thinking "can't go wrong with tacos" - well - that went wrong. We aren't sure they were even tacos. They were two small tortillas flat with ground beef and onions piled on top and that was it! No tomatoes. No lettuce. No cheese. The other of us ordered beef quesadilla... just beef and cheese - nothing else was on it. No tomatoes or anything. There was free salsa we could get for them but it would not have been enough to redeem the meal. So, if you get food there, stick with the enchiladas. Get them to go - it's really hot with flies - not a great experience to eat inside. And have exact change - they had no change. Not sure I'm ready to trust reviews for future dining choices after today. read more

Great food for lunch. The salsa bar was fantastic and we all enjoyed a Jarritos with our Mexican food plates. Kids enjoyed their food as well. All in all, great experience- very authentic and the lady in the kitchen and the register was a super hard working mom who had everything under control! read more

Came here from out of town. There aren't many food choices in Clayton, let alone ones with decent reviews. We were hopeful when we saw a 4 star restaurant. This is one of the few times a restaurant with a high rating tanked my expectations. Before I continue; we love authentic Mexican food, not the Tex mex nonsense they serve at most established chain restaurants. We have had authentic Mexican food many many many times which was a huge draw for this place. We ordered a sandwich, taco platter (3 tacos with rice and beans), a water, and one bottle of Mexican cola. Maybe it was an off day but the produce (lettuce tomato lime) were all wilted/dried as if they'd been sitting on a hot counter all day. Upon leaving I noticed they had the front doors propped open so maybe there's an issue with AC? It was a whopping $28.00 for our meals. I get that the cost of good has increased but this was ridiculous pricing for what we got. The restaurant itself was not dirty - it was dated and many of the features align with the "hole in the wall" aesthetic. Appearances don't mean much when it comes to food quality and taste - this is a special case though. Im giving two stars because the service was okay. I wouldn't ever come back here. Scoot on down to the grocery store if you want an acceptable dining experience in Clayton. read more

Stopped here on the way from Colorado to Texas. Ordered over the phone when we were about 20 mins away. When we arrived, the food still took about over 5 minutes to be ready. We ordered 4 tacos: pastor (delicious), carnitas (delicious), tripa (my fave, delicious), and lengua (dry and no flavor). Decent food for middle of nowhere. read more

Nothing like stumbling upon a "locals only" hole in the wall.. only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was this joint was packed.. only employee was the cook, who also played the part of hostess, cashier, waiter and bottle washer. His co worker went fishing... literally. During my one hour espere in caja caliente I had the pleasure of shooting the only breeze around with some locals This was no fast food joint.. All who enters know they will be sitting a bit.. every order is taken, made on the spot, wrapped up and paid for before the next order is taken. One regular, who graciously translated my order to el cocinero, was waved into the kitchen to fry her own French fries. All this while people are coming in taking a seat waiting for their turn to order. Oddly enough I, along with those few who commented below, came upon this place traveling from Texas to Colorado. Clayton, New Mexico won't make it on Forbes top 10 resort destinations any more than Taqueria Dalhart #2 will receive a Michelin Star.. Perhaps my low expectations To me I'd discovered a rare find and rejoiced so much in my it is to fall into a rare find.. America has so few unadulterated,genuine,REAL LIFE, authentic food stops.. Corporate USA has overtaken..soon all the mom and pop shops will be an urban myth. read more

Definitely worth the stop!! Got several tacos carnitas (amazing) pastor (amazing) azada (ok but kind of bland), lengua (slightly tough but good flavor) and Barbacoa ( okay). Although the azada and barbacoa needed a little more flavor for me they had an AWESOME salsa bar with several different flavors and heat elements to add to the tacos. Also in the salsa bar were limes, friend chili's, and relish. Their beans and rice were good and chips very crunchy and fresh! Definitely worth the price we paid too, very reasonable for the amount of food you get!! Will definitely come back again when passing through! They unfortunately were out of their tripas but we will try it next time! read more

I was never to disappointed with Mexican food, avoid this place if you are traveling, service is bad the two ladies were not respectful.

Started with noticing bugs in the bottom of the fridge by the front, but decided to give them a chance anyway. I had flautas, and my son had a cheese quesadilla. I didn't love mine. I couldn't put my finger on what I wasn't loving about them -- the chicken inside of them was kinda chalky-dry, I guess. My son said his food was "okay". The staff was very sweet / friendly.
