We stopped here to meet up with friends who frequent this place, before going to a show at The Masonic. Interesting concept, it's like a beer store and bar. There are shelves filled with canned beer for purchase to take home or to enjoy there. There is a menu wall of craft beer on tap. There is a full bar as well, we ordered some Old Fashioneds, since we're not craft beer people. Our friends told us that the owner was the man making our drinks. He was a really hands on business owner, he was also clearing tables. We enjoyed our cocktails, then I tried a canned hars seltzer smoothie that was flavored like Pina colada called Smooj, it was very good. They don't serve food here (besides bagged chips and pretzels), but our friends said that you could bring take out and eat here. We sat at a nice patio area in front, the windows of the building were open to the fresh air. I will definitely remember this place when we're looking for a spot in Midtown to drink. read more

What a great bar! The cocktails are great and strong. They have a huge selection of beer and beer on tap. They also have a decent selection of wines, meads, ciders, and non-alcoholic drinks. They also sell chips if you need a snack. It was surprisingly busy for a Monday happy hour, which was awesome to see. The inside is very cute and has a vintage feel to it. For someone who doesn't live IN Detroit, I can definitely see how people are excited about this place. As an outside visitor, I found a few aspects that need improvement. There's a huge selection of craft beers and ciders to choose from in 6-packs. They also have an entire wall of singles, but here's my issue... there's hardly any organization of the bottles (such as beer style, brewery, etc) and many of the singles didn't have prices. A little frustrating when you're looking to try new things. As for the little bar area, I was also bummed they only had one cider on tap (Scrumpy... it was disgusting) and most of the other beers were for aficionados only... nothing for a lightweight or newcomer to the scene. I have been to the Ferndale location, which is better. Located in rundown Chinatown (no longer China in any way, just the name from the old days) in the Cass between Wayne State and the Motor City casino complex. The section it is in is very run down and near a large rescue mission project complex. Be very careful, a number of poor drug abusers or seriously mentally ill wander aimlessly or sit in junk chairs all over the area. High risk of car break ins or robbery. The building the store is in is newly renovated and nice, sharing modern bathrooms with other trendy places. Street parking is easy. Inside are two tall shelving units and one short shelf unit of craft beers. Not as many as other Metro Detroit stores nor as much as the Ferndale location. One cold cooler, and wall shelves of singles. A pretty good but not great selection. There is a small bar and 16 taps, some of which have more rare beers. The prices for the bottles and taps are about 20% higher than other, better, local stores on most items. The staff seemed friendly. There are better selections at better prices elsewhere. read more

I like this place! Kind of got away from craft beer for a while because I felt like I couldn't keep up with everything coming out and started drink Miller Lite and Hamm's. While those are still staple beers for me haha, I really love looking at all the different kinds here! There's a lot of hard-to-find beers, but also some normal popular craft beers. Prices are reasonable and the staff are helpful! Even if they don't know something, they're happy to find out for you. I like that there's a bar here too, and the taps seem to rotate pretty frequently. This was a great little find on Cass and Peterboro after a trip to the Masonic Temple for the Detroit Urban Craft Fair (DUCF). Tried the Blackrocks 51k IPA and the Greenbush Star Chicken Shotgun IPA. The bartender, Christen, was very knowledgeable and personable. The store also has merchandise for beer connoisseur, i.e. growler coozies, growler scrubbrush, growlers with the Spirit of Detroit on them, Tees, glasses, etc..... worth a trip. Place is in one of the more sketchy parts of Detroit with a lot of homeless people wandering the streets or sleeping on the ground in the middle of the day, would not want to come here at night. Neighborhood looks like it is trying to turn over for the better but just not there yet. Plato itself is very nice, clean interior, well organized, much better then the neighborhood it is in. They have a decent beer selection, not huge but they do have a lot of quality for what they do have. They also have a few beers on tap, love that samplers are only a dollar or 2, best prices I have seen in the area for tasters. Stopped in after checking out Founders as it is right down the street. Has a nice selection of bottled craft beers for sale in a grocery-like setup. They also have a small bar area with long picnic tables where you can enjoy beers on tap and hang out with friends. They had a few games available to play as you're sipping your beers, and we played Jenga while we sampled beer. You can order a pint or create your own flight with as many taster pours as you like for a couple dollars a piece. Nice rotating tap list...I tried Mokka Munt, Chocolate covered strawberry and Ski Patrol, all of which were great. Also picked up a bottle of Griffin Claw Barrel Aged Flying Buffalo to take home. Fun place to hang out with friends, try some new beers, and find some great bottles or create your own six pack. Great location, within walking distance of Founders, Peterboro Chinese restaurant right next door and Masonic temple across the street. 8 degrees has a nice variety of craft beers and ciders, including a fair selection of singles as well as cold six packs. Sure, it's not the widest stock I've seen, but you're guaranteed to find something that tickles your fancy. Even more interesting than the beer in bottles is the beer at the bar. 16 taps offer a couple familiar flavors, but mostly brews you don't see everywhere else. I really like that most are offered in full size pours as well as short pours (around 6 oz I think). The atmosphere is nice, but it lacks the cozy feeling that I'd want to hang out all afternoon. It's more of a one-and-done (maybe two) kind of place. Staff has been really hit or miss. Some of them are super friendly and engaging, but a good handful have been that typical standoffish-Detroit-asshole type that I so passionately despise. Prices are middle of the road to slightly above. If this exact store was in a suburb, it might only get three stars from me. But I don't know of any shop like this in the area, so it definitely fills a void. read more

The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly and they will walk you through the entire store if that's what it takes to help you understand what they have to offer. And what they have to offer is a wide selection of local Michigan beers, as well as libations from far and wide. I actually discovered Bell's in a beer shop in Los Angeles, but I'm happier to drink it here in Detroit, and Plato's has it!
