Went April 2021 to the Downtown shop get my 7MGE rebuilt with new main bearings and new headgasket, someone on the Facebook Edmonton car group recommended 7Eighty (and I should have never listened to them). Diego says no problem, he knows 7M engines and can get it done. I gave them a $8000 budget (more than enough for a basic build) and stressed that the car means alot to me and if it will cost more to get done properly, I can make it happen. Then he says the engine is leaking oil everywhere to the point where it has to come out for a rebuild and a 2JZ swap is direct and easier and would be same price or cheaper. Tell them sure, go for it, they leave my car unlocked and my parts get stolen and half the dash on my car gets broken and snapped by whoever broke in (on a 30 year old JDM car thats already hard to get interior parts for, lovely). They then transfer my car to the Kingsway 7eighty shop because "they're better equipped for the job" who then leave the window down with a bag half ass flapping for 2 weeks straight in the jank alley of 118ave (see image) where it gets broken into again with garbage left everywhere, the keys sitting in plain sight on the seat for the entire 2 weeks, and rain pouring in allover the carpet and cloth interior causing mould. Car sits at the Kingsway shop for 5 months before they get all frustrated and say "Diego is dumb, the swap isn't easy or direct" and the Kingsway location puts it on me to find someone to help finish the swap, make custom motor mounts, etc after me already paying thousands in labour for them to pull my old engine and everything. These guys pushed me to 2JZ swap, THEY should have been the ones to source someone to subcontract to finish the swap, not leave me high and dry after paying thousands in labour already for a swap they pushed me to do.
I ended up paying my bill at 7Eighty (thousands in labour for shoddy work to boot, shop that finished the swap for me said the oil pan had 2-3 tubes of silicone holding it together and they have never seen something so poorly done), found a massive new dent in the left rear quarter panel that was clearly smoked hard with a car that was being towed that "they know nothing about" and towed my car/took the 2JZ to a proper shop that finished the swap properly and said it was easy to finish, motor mounts/trans mounts were very basic to make and it's embarrassing that 7Eighty found it over their head and embarrassing how 7Eighty had the engine. Even funnier the "low mileage clean 2JZ" I paid $5k for was a clapped junkyard turd that was likely in a scrap pile in Japan, the shop that finished the swap for me took the head off before swapping it in the chassis and there was coolant sitting in cylinder #6 for months causing corrosion, pitting and scoring (see image), the bearings were all scored and there was oil sludge EVERYWHERE in the block and head. They estimated it at a 250-300k km engine that was not maintained well and said it was basically garbage, I then had to pay another $10,000 for ARE to do a full build on the engine because it was a POS boat anchor otherwise. The shop that properly finished my build actually recommended I cut my losses and LS swap the car but I was bitter from all the crap 7Eighty put me through and wanted this damn 2JZ done even if it cost more in the end. That's the tip of the iceberg considering how much $$$ I had to spend repairing the interior from when the car was broken into at both shops, importing dash pieces from Thailand to replace the parts snapped from when they left my car unlocked and the window left down in the open for 2 weeks. As costly/sad as it was, for the 5 months my car was at 7Eighty Downtown or Kingsway, I drove by to see it every single morning and night to make sure there wasn't more damage to it, a crackhead digging in it, etc. Multiple times I did find someone snooping around it, garbage sitting on it, used tires leaning on it or ontop of it, etc. That's what you put someone giving you $5000+ in labour and business through?
The Downtown shop and Kingsway shops were both horrendously bad in every aspect, I was a Jman RedSeal tech myself for 10 years and saw some shoddy shops and sketchy techs but these guys take the cake in every aspect. The "cheap" 2JZ swap these guys pushed me to do cost me over $20,000 all said and done AFTER having the engine rebuilt and installed by a proper shop, the thousands of labour I sunk at 7Eighty aren't even included in that $20k total and are sunk cost for garbage work. The shop I took my car to get the swap properly finished/undo what 7Eighty had created was completely amazing, got it done right, and had my car indoors at all times after hearing the absolute hell 7Eighty put me through for 5 months and transferred the car to their bodyshop to have all the damage fixed, paint resprayed, and the interior repaired/cleaned up. If you care about your car, avoid these guys at all costs. read more
