    Cans!

Before I moved to Ann Arbor, I asked my beer geek friends in Albany about which regional beers I should seek out when I arrived. Ross K, without a moment of hesitation, said 734 Brewing in Ypsi. I remember, because I wrote it down. At the time, I had no idea there was a place called Ypsilanti, and I had never heard of 734 Brewing. Learning about great places that aren't on my radar is one of my favorite things! Flash forward a year. The world is beset by a deadly pandemic, and I still haven't been to 734 Brewing. However, I wisely follow them on social media. Which is where I learned another incredible thing. They can deliver beer to your door in Ann Arbor! This seemed too good to be true, but I decided to give it a shot. So I grabbed my phone, and after a few clicks I had set up a home delivery for later that same day. A six pack of their IPA and a sixer of the oatmeal stout were supposed to arrive around 8pm. The delivery fee was a paltry flat rate of $2, and I was able to leave a generous tip at the time I placed the order. All they wanted was to see my ID when dropping off the beer. So I left a note that I would tape it to the front door, so we could have a totally contactless transaction. Amazingly, the beer showed up, and it's fantastic. For starters, it's nice to have six packs of twelve ounce beers. So many breweries have moved to four packs of sixteen ounce tall boys. And it's refreshing to have craft beer that's restrained. It's beer flavored beer. No mangos. No vanilla beans or lactose. Just well made brews that are full flavored, delightfully balanced, and have great body. I'm not proud to admit it, but I've paid more for a four-pack of highly sought after beer, than I did for these two six-packs, even with delivery and tip. Thank you to 734 Brewing for making the trek out to Ann Arbor for beer deliveries. I truly hope that they keep this service running through the pandemic, as I would love to make this my official house beer during these dark days. When it's finally safe to venture out, maybe I'll even get a chance to make it out to Ypsi and thank them in person.

The 734 is a place I thoroughly enjoy! I've actually been here a few times. If you are looking for a unique spot for a drink....look no further than the 734. It's a college town and this place has such a cool vibe. The staff are great always so kind and friendly. I really enjoy their seltzers and they have a craft cocktail menu. They have a great outside space for seating and the local patrons are fantastic. If you are lucky, you might even catch a live performance while sipping your drinks. If you get a chance, check out their beer paddles. haha

We're deep into a brewery craze back home in Ohiooooooooo, and saw no reason not to keep it going while on a quick weekend getaway to our neighbors to the north in Michigan!! This was a great first stop upon our arrival to the wonderful, surprisingly vibrant Depot Town section of Ypsilanti. Nice front patio outside, but we chose to sit in their equally cozy interior section, roomier than it first looks, and filled with great artwork. Not a huge beer selection, but some interesting choices. I had a hibiscus-flavored ale that was really unique, and the Mr. enjoyed his choices as well. We left, had dinner, took a walk around town, and came back to enjoy some great live music and another couple of beers. Great first (and last!!) stop on a beautiful Friday night stop through of my new favorite "stomping grounds" when in Michigan!!

Clean and friendly! I loved this taproom! So different from the dark industrial style! White walls, barstools, and a real clean look. I had a couple of the oatmeal stouts and by the second one made friends with some locals. I was happy to be able to talk with people about the area and it makes me want to go back and explore again sometime soon! Otmeal Stout on a cold day!

It's always nice to have a new brewery in town especially when they taste as good as this. Cool place in Depot town. It's worth a try. I tried all the ones they offer nothing to me is like oh wow I can't live without another pint but better than others in town.

734 is quaint and has a limited menu, however, they always deliver when it comes to entertainment, community involvement, and friendly staff. They don't offer food, but often have food trucks out front, welcome you to bring your own food, and even accept delivery order from restaurants nearby. I highly recommend the mug club, which offers many perks, including discounts (even on kegs)!

New brewery in Ypsi's Depot Town. Minimalist, contemporary interior. Naughty-looking tap handles of the famous Ypsi Water Tower. Good beer. Try the Dr. Perry Amber and the Raspberry. No food on the menu yet. Good corner location, this will be a busy spot. In you're in Ypsi, definitely check out the Corner Brewery (sometimes called the ABC Brewpub; great spot! also have a beer garden) and also Cultivate Taphouse (have large beer garden).

Ok, I just heard a news story on NPR with Cynthia Canty and the head brewmaster at 734 Brewery. It was interesting to hear the brewmaster's POV. First, 734 is different from your typical brewery bc they are appealing to the minority population that doesn't typically frequent breweries or drink craft brew. That's why 734's ultra modern ambiance and programming that features minority musicians and artists are so different from many of the wood-cladden, indie-inspo breweries. Then the beer... 734 brews beer in a way that gently introduces people who dont drink beer to craft beer without slapping them in the face with hoppy IPA's and the like. So now I get why 734's craft brews are different. Still not my fave beers based on what I'm used to, but I love what they're doing. It would be awesome if they were more up front about their mission that was shared in the NPR special.

We were here in December so the patio wasn't open but looks roomy with many picnic tables. We opted to sit at the bar because that's usually where we get personal with brew pubs we love to discover. We always search local brews when traveling and 9/10 times the bartender will greet us, ask if we've been there, make recommendations or tell us a bit about the brewery style. Not here. I'm not sure the bartender ever even made eye contact and pretty sure he wanted to be there even less than he wanted us to be there. We did get a few beer samples by request, but no recommendations, he didn't ask what we thought and he made us feel very unwelcome right from the start. However, once that bartender was relieved the new bartender was chatty and friendly to the new customers. We had finished our beers and meal by that time and just needed to cash out. So I would say maybe it's just that one employee. We had the pretzels. Kudos to the pretzel bread-- it was delicious. Beer cheese was pretty good, as was the mustard. We asked about the menu and what he recommends (still trying to be friendly and get him to warm up). He recommended the special menu, so we ordered the Blackened Salmon sandwich. It was okay/average. Fries were cold. We ordered the Table Talk beer and I enjoyed it. I'd say that the beer was the best part of the whole experience. Overall I'm glad we tried it but we wouldn't go back. If the bartender had been more welcoming and interested in sharing a bit more about the concept, we would give it a second try when we head out there again. It's always good to try other food items and beers, but the vibe doesn't warrant a second try. I can understand if a place is busy, but we were there at 2pm on a Saturday and were two of four at the bar and he didn't look to be super busy with the restaurant as a whole. It's always so disappointing when service falls so short on something that could be such a unique experience. Three stars for the beer and pretzel.

We arrived when it was not too crowded, but the restaurant very quickly filled up just after we arrived and unfortunately our posted server didn't notice us for quite a while so we had to flag someone to serve us and by that point the restaurant was getting pretty busy. Poor timing - oh well. We ordered the Prime Rib French Dip to split, as neither of us has a huge appetite but that was probably not a great decision. Usually, French dip sandwiches are huge, but this one was served on a hot dog bun, so not overly big. It was served with a healthy dose of horseradish cream sauce and was pretty tasty. I meant to substitute fries but in the chaos of it all forgot, so the sandwich came with chips which were unfortunately quite ordinary. My father ordered a beer flight and was quite pleased with his selections (6 x 3oz pours for $15). He most enjoyed the Sonorous Stout and he's a big fan of stouts and lagers in general. I think my father definitely enjoyed his experience and this was mostly for him, so that was good. I would definitely consider getting him a growler to go in the future since he really seemed to enjoy the beer very much.
