This was a pleasant Mediterranean surprise here in Allendale! It is very conveniently located near GVSU, so if you work there, or are a student, this could be a nice go to place for you. TL;DR - 2 stars because the service staff doesn't suck, but too expensive, tiny portions, and no beef kabobs. Save your money and head somewhere else. Came in this evening to get some dinner that wasn't a burger or pizza. It wasn't our first time and we were greeted promptly by a staff member. We talked for a moment while we looked at the menu which he told me was updated 3-4 weeks ago. Long story short, I ask if I can order some single items off the "extras" menu to put together some food since they got rid of their old platters and beef kabobs. Of course, they say yes and after a few more minutes of discussion, we put in an order and have a sear. 10 minutes later, our food is done and the staff member brings over our food. I say thank you and we head out. Once we get outside, I make the comment to my wife that the bag feels SO light. Once in the car, I hand it to her, and she agrees. We get home and open the bag (it's stapled at this point) to start unpacking - the portion sizes were ridiculous. So ridiculous in fact that I threw each container on the food scale to see how bad it actually was. Spoiler alert: inconsistent portion sizes, incredibly small for the cost, and not even what we expected to get. Photos attached - 2x 16 oz. rice orders, one 10.19 oz and the other 11.75 oz., 2x beef shawarma orders, one 4.13 oz., the other 2.68 oz., and finally, 2x chicken tawouk, one 6 oz., the other 4.37 oz. Total price, $33'ish dollars for two portions about the size of a Panda Bowl. So, I called the shop - the same person who rang us up and brought us our food picked up the call. I explained the issues and he was receptive. He apologized and asked what he could do to make it right. He also said that the portions are packaged off site (I assume at their other location) so it sounds like they just reheat precooked food vs. actually prepare it fresh. I told him that I appreciated the gesture but we wouldn't be back - the cost, the portion size, and now knowing it's essentially reheated leftovers is enough for me to drive a bit further, save a couple bucks, and have an actual meal. read more

I've been wanting to try 616 for awhile and finally had the chance to do so today. I ordered the Chicken Shish Tawouk Bowl and it was meh. The chicken was very dry - but the flavor was good. The flavor on the yellow rice was great, but the veggies were quite soggy and soft. The red sauce tasted like salsa, but the white spice was deliciously garlicky. I had them delivered so I can't speak on the dine-in service, but what I had was DELICIOUS!!! The falafel wrap was amazingly generous, with huge falafels and pickled veggies! The most authentic Mediterranean food, the lamb shawarma took me way back to my childhood in Dubai. Every item I have tried exceeded expectations, like the lentils and rice dish and the kibbeh, and they have a great variety on their menu, I couldn't get through it all even though we went there 4 times in 4 weeks while I was visiting Grand Rapids, and one of the times was a larger order for a small party- they LOVED the food too but still we did not get a chance to try everything out. I have something to look forward to the next time I visit that city! Owner and staff are great too. If you have not yet tried 616 Kabob Stop Express on 48th in Allendale, you should. It is under new ownership and a new menu. Tonight we had the lamb platter, fatoush salad, Chicken Shawarma bowl and the falafel bowl. Everything was amazing and the average cost was about $10/person. You would pay more than that at any fast food joint these days and you won't get food this good. He can prepare it traditional if you ask. #supportlocal read more
