Yeah, it was enough for THREE of us!

Maybe you already know that Clemson's ice cream has won nationwide accolades. That should be enough, but if you're one of those people that needs a personal recommendation, I'm here for you! Hubby remembers fondly his days at Clemson, when any leftover ice cream was brought to the canteen at the end of the day, and given to the students. So, today, the granddaughter and I joined him to enjoy a huge banana split. It may have appeared that three starved people had happened on a boat of ice cream. The words "feeding frenzy" come to mind. Yes, it was that good. If I thought I could get away with it, I would want to visit this store every time I travel through. But that might produce a much heavier me. Sigh. But I digress. For many years, Clemson has also been known for its Bleu Cheese, so make sure to check out the bleu cheese offerings when you're there. And there are some great T-shirts available for purchase. So ... Visit this world class ice cream shop, at the world class Clemson University. You will thank me.

Three scoops are $3.79. That's coffee ice cream in both cups!

If I were a Clemson student, I'd totally be haunting this campus ice cream parlor. I'd get an A in upper level ice cream eating, no doubt. This is a unique dessert shop in that it's student-run; students make the ice cream on campus for '55 Exchange and profits go towards student education and training. My Clemson alum friend was saying that the milk comes from Clemson cows. The website didn't say anything about that, but I'm sure it was true back in the old days if not at present. After waiting in line for nearly 30 minutes (!!!), it was time to order. The ice cream at '55Exchange was relatively inexpensive, at least to someone who's used to big city prices. Three generous scoops [supposedly 12 oz.] were $3.79 total without tax. Samples were freely distributed upon request. The mint chocolate chip was full of minty-ness and chippy-ness, though the glaring greenish hue was slightly too unnatural for my preference. The coffee was just how you want coffee--strong and tasty. And the Tiger Boulevard sported roadblock-sized sea salt fudge chunks that made me feel as content as when there is basically zero traffic and all the other drivers are competent and polite. If you heart blue cheese, you can find it for sale in various configurations in a self-serve fridge off to the side. The wedge of 8 ounces ($8.49) was pretty tasty. Be aware that the cheese is on the moist side and extremely soft. Unopened, it will stay fresh for 3 months stored in the fridge or freezer. Fun cheesy fact from clemson.edu/bluecheese: "The first Clemson University Blue Cheese was cured in Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel in 1941." Cool!

This is actually the best ice cream shop I have ever visited! The flavors are just outstanding here and the portions are extremely large for the price that you pay. The apple pie ice cream tastes just like a homemade apple pie and the waffle cones are hand dipped and absolutely delicious. The price is quite good for what you receive and there is hardly any wait time. The ice cream is from Clemson cows made by the students of Clemson for the students. This place is really outstanding and I definitely recommend visiting after game day or right when you come into town on a Friday evening. I will definitely be coming back here for years to come.

That is totally reasonable so we made the truck over. When we arrived however, I thought we were in the wrong place. It has an industrial feel, not a farmers market feel, and there were no markets going on outside. As a matter of fact, the only market was indoor with about a dozen or so stalls. We were disappointed, but I wanted to check it out so my husband remained in the vehicle with our dog. I looked at every market stall inside and I was in and out in about 5 minutes. Having produce doesn't make something a farmers market. It just felt like walking around local grocery store. About a third of the vendors were fruits and vegetables and the rest were knick-knacks and t-shirts and miscellaneous items. Also, it was incredibly empty. I mean I understand why. I did find a new cider to try but knowing what I know now, I would most likely not make the drive again. I realize I'm not from the area, but this was no different than any local grocery stores to me.

So happy that I did! When I walked in, the staff were super friendly and all smiles. The cashier/barista was such a sweetheart! They have a cheese market, deli, bakery bar, and coffee shop all in one! They sell all kinds of charcuterie items, from salami, cheese, jam, jellies, to coffee, candy, wine, and chocolates. They also sell cutting boards and other little trinkets. I absolutely loved that they sell "charcuterie for one" that has cheese, meats, and olives for a single serving on the go too! We saw that they had a lunch box special for sandwiches that includes a sandwich, cookie, pickle spear, and bag of chips for $12. What a steal!!! We decided to get the Jammin' Pig sandwich which is a panini pressed sandwich with ham, brie cheese, and cherry jalapeño jam. The lunch box was a great size and included Lay's regular potato chips and a chocolate chip cookie! They also sell other cookies and baked goodies (brownies, cakes, etc.) at the bakery bar area. The sandwich was probably the best sandwich I ever had in my life. Holy cow! The sandwich was pressed and grilled perfectly with nice grill marks and the meat and cheese was fresh! The brie and the cherry jalapeño jam melted together so nicely and added a creamy and flavorful element to the sandwich. The ham provided the saltiness that helped cut a little bit of the sweetness from the jam. The jam wasn't spicy at all. It was a beautifully balanced sandwich. My husband thought I was exaggerating (because I'm not picky with anything haha), but as soon as he took a bite, his expression was speechless. He loved the sandwich so much, that we decided to come back the very next day and ordered the same sandwich and tried another one. If you want to take another step, take a bite of the sandwich and then a bite of the pickle for that hint of acidity. It causes a umami effect with all the flavors dancing on your palette! For the lunch box special, you either get a chocolate chip cookie or the white chocolate cranberry one (I believe they alternate cookie flavors based on their inventory), but both cookies were delicious. The texture is not like other cookies as it's more like an oatmeal texture kind of deal. A little bit crumbly, but nonetheless, both flavors were very good and tasty. My husband ordered the Kickin' Horse sandwich the day after and he actually liked it better than the Jammin' Pig. His sandwich consisted of ciabatta bread, roast beef, muenster cheese, horseradish sauce, and onion, panini pressed style. I had a bite of his sandwich and all the flavors worked so well. The horseradish sauce brings out the roast beef flavor and enhances the muenster cheese. We tried some iced latte specials as well. We had the "Hippie Chick" that is a lavender honey flavored latte and the "Sweater Weather" which is a cinnamon and caramel? flavored latte. We absolutely loved the Hippie Chick latte and ordered another one when we came back, but the "Sweater Weather" wasn't our favorite. Respectfully, it tasted like a fall candle. It was good, but not the best we've had. Overall, we will definitely come back when we're in the area. The price was worth it for the amount of food that you get! Trust me when I say to get the sandwiches! You will not be disappointed!!! Now I'm craving their Jammin' Pig sandwich....

UPDATE NOVEMBER 15, 2025…read more I took a small family trip to Happy Cow Creamery with my oldest niece, my niece's daughter and her boyfriend and their two boys. The first family trip to Happy Cow was in 2022, and my oldest grandson/grand nephew was 14 months. The cost of a tour is $8 per person with a child's age to pay starting at 4 yrs. Our tour was at 9:30am, with another group of 16 people that didn't show up, so we had the wagon ride to ourselves except for one other passenger. Ms. Susie is very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Happy Cow Creamery, and you are given the opportunity to ask questions about what you're told as well as any other questions you might have. Ms. Susie has been with Happy Cow Creamery for quite some time, and use to live across the road from farmer Tom. I believe the young lady driving the tractor pulled wagon said that Ms. Susie had been friends with one of farmer Tom's children. On today's visit several of the cows were pregnant, and one of the cow's was about to actually give birth that morning. We thought we would get to see it, but she had moved to another location by the time we had finished our tour. Cows cannot produce any milk until after they give birth, and for the first 24 hours it's important for her baby to get that first milk. We didn't get to see the live birth, but we did get to meet all of the calves that were recently born. The samples of chocolate and white milk was very good as well as getting your choice of chocolate and vanilla ice creams. The milk is bottled right there at Happy Cow Creamery, and does need to be shaken because it's not homogenized. Happy Cow milk will separate causing the cream to rise to the top( y'all that milk is fresh!!!!). This is the reason for shaking the milk, and it tells you that on the container " Shake Well". After visiting the calves, and another look to see if the birth giving cow was out of hiding, we headed to the new and improved onsite store, that even has a drive thru for your convenience. The new store has been opened for about 2 years, and has a lot of goodies to offer. Too many variety of cheeses to name, fresh butter, jams, jellies, preserves, honey, maple syrups, fresh veggies, candies, home made sour dough bread and Happy Cow souvenirs(shirts, post cards etc.) The store was very clean and decorated for the upcoming holidays. Ms. Susie also told us that the old site store was going to be the future site for an ice cream parlor. If you have some free time, take a trip to Happy Cow Creamery. It was such a nice day for a calm, relaxing and enjoyable morning, and as usual it's always nice to spend time with FAMILY.
