Two Weeks Notice Brewing

Two Weeks Notice Brewing

So, if you're sitting at a table in their tap room and want another beer, what do you do? Well, Two…read moreWeeks Notice knows how thirsty you are, so they made it easy for you. See that little stand-up thing on your table that says, "Beer Me?" See that big round button in its center? Well, just press the button, the whole thing lights up, so the staff can see it and someone will be there in a jiff to get you a new glass of suds. Is this a great country or what? I gotta thank my South Carolina buddy Ron for that "great country" line, he texted it back to me after I texted him a photo of the table thingy with an explanation. We loved our visit yesterday -great beer selection, super friendly service, a big spacious seating area (with a large outdoor seating option), terrific artwork on the walls that's for sale, and very nice food service as well. They had sixteen beers on tap yesterday, a nice selection representing different beer styles, and not overly IPA dependent, like some of the breweries I visit. I saw lagers, stouts, and a Kolsch. IPAs were well represented with Imperial Double, Session, New England, and milkshake IPA variants. My wife went with a 16-ounce draft of Weekend Warrior (American Lager - 5% ABV) for a very reasonable $5. I wanted their 12-ounce draft of Keepers of the Cake: Birthday Cake W/Raspberry & Strawberry (a White Stout - 6% ABV) for $8, but that wasn't available, so I went with their unfruited version of the same for $7. I loved my beer and sipped the Weekend Warrior too -both were excellent! Some of the names on the beer list made me chuckle -Pink Slip, Severance Package, Performance Review, and Big Riff. There's live music on Friday nights, and occasional food truck on site, and a separate food vendor (separate ordering and payment) in the back. We got a pretzel and a damned fine loaded hot dog. So where did the brewery's name come from? Years ago, Mark -the current Head Brewer's wife gave him a home beer brewing kit as a birthday gift. He entered a few beer competitions and won, including the prestigious Worthy Brewfest. The website puts it this way "Mark coined the name of the company based off his wish of one day quitting his desk job to pursue his dream of owning and operating his own brewery. It was not long until Mark was absolutely determined to become a true contributor in the craft beer community he loved." Mark found a business partner in his old boss, and the two of them quit together to open the brewery. As my buddy Ron said, is this a great country or what?

This brewery tends to have the biggest selection of different types of beer to choose from, and you won't find yourself saying wow, they have a good IPA but I don't like their lager. This is one of the few beer breweries where I will actually buy their Irish stout because it is yummy. You will also notice that the artwork is quite interesting as well, done by a local artist. The food here is your basic snacks, and we don't mind if we have to have a couple of pretzels with dipping sauce to enjoy our beer outside with. If you like inside, the inside has spacious sitting and it is really nice to have an option where you can sit with someone and have a conversation and not feel like you need to shout over the people next to you. It is just great. I took home the Two Year Anniversary cans, which is a REALLY smooth and tasty ipa.

A Ceramic Studio - Glaze work of the heart box

A Ceramic Studio

I am honored to be the first to give this 5-star establishment a review. According to the owner,…read moreit's been around for a couple of years so I'm surprised that it hasn't had a review yet. I think it might be because the location of it is not easy to find. It's behind a small shopping strip. Even the directions that Yelp has on here is confusing when you put it on the GPS it'll take you to the strip but then you have to make sure to drive around the back. I've been doing pottery for close to a year back home, but when I came to visit family, they expressed a desire to do something pottery related and so I came on here to Yelp and found out about Ceramic Studio. It's a small place. Immediately when you walk in, you'll see loads of ceramics that are available for glazing/painting. It ranges from as cheap as $5. What I like most about this place is that the price you see on the ceramic piece is the final price (not including of course tax and if you use credit card you'll be charged $2) I've been to other ceramic painting places and if you use glazes like the jungle gems, that's extra or you'll get an extra firing fee. They don't do that here, and I appreciate that. There's two rooms. One where walk-ins can come and paint, and another for if you book a party. When I was there, I felt like I was at a family members house. It's hard to describe. It's just really laid back and comfortable. They use a white bodied clay, and the glazes you can choose from are Mayco brand. I use Mayco when I do my pottery pieces and it's a good brand. I like that they have a chart with sample pieces of what they can come out looking like after firing. When you're new to glazing, a lot of times you don't realize that the paint color you use comes out looking totally different after firing, and they do a good job of letting you know what you can expect. You can see our before and after pics that I posted on here to get an idea. Overall, this spot is very affordable, felt right at home and if I lived in this area I'd probably be there all the time.

One admission gets you into all five: 1. The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum 2. Springfield Science Museum 3. Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts 4. Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History 5. George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum (closed for renovations at this time) Dr. Seuss Museum is the newest addition and an absolute delight - colorful, immersive, and photo-ready. The first floor is pure chaotic kid energy, like a Dr. Seuss book come to life; the second floor is more grown up, featuring a recreation of Springfield native Theodor Geisel's (aka Dr. Seuss) studio and living room, plus exhibits on his life. My child refused to leave. Thankfully, the museum is equipped with benches and seats in every room, as it is incontrovertible law that children's play areas can never have too many resting places for parents. I eventually pried my child away and ushered him to the science & natural history museum, which was also a hit. Highlights included a snowboarding video game and a 360° photo capture that spits out a digital image you can email to yourself as a souvenir. There's also a dinosaur hall, African hall, planetarium, animal dioramas, small aquariums, and a nice gift shop. Again, kid did not want to leave. Grandpa is into history so toured the Museum of Springfield History on his own. Springfield was once a manufacturing powerhouse: automobiles, firearms, and home of the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company. Fittingly, the museum has an automobile gallery, the world's largest collection of Indian cycles and memorabilia, and the world's largest collection of Smith & Wesson guns among its 1,600+ firearms. Grandpa learned a lot about local history and the Connecticut River Valley. I only got a quick walk-through of the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, and regret not having more time to linger over the intricate and absolutely exquisite "Book of Wonder"exhibit by Donna Castellanos. The Smith Art Museum, a Victorian-era single-collector museum, is currently closed for renovation, which was fine, as by that point we'd run out of time and energy anyway. Even the on-site restaurant, Blake House Café, was excellent, serving food from Smoked, a local BBQ joint. There was something for everyone in the family (kids, arts, history, and science) and it's good bang for your buck. The museums are compact enough to hit all five in one day if you keep moving, but you're better off slowing down and focusing on two or three.

The hotel room didn't have a desk so I made a makeshift desk with the chair and an ironing board. I'm like the MacGruber of business travel. The pillows were actually decent and the room was nice too. The bed was comfortable and the guest bath had nice toiletries and a nice decor. It's way more expensive for a room than it should be considering the amenities at the casino. There's a sports bar that was huge and they also have an outdoor courtyard for watching sports (and other stuff too I'd imagine). Terry Bradshaw's head is even bigger on that TV. A lot of the restaurants are closed during certain weekdays, but the Italian pizza place/restaurant across the street was amazing. Go there for sure!

Collette Tours - Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, SD

Collette Tours

This was the first time we traveled with Collette. The 7 day/6 night tour, "Spotlight on South…read moreDakota," featured Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower (in Wyoming), Badlands National Park, and much more. The itinerary was appealing because, in contrast to tours with multiple destinations linked by long, tedious motor coach rides between 1- or 2-night hotel stays, we would be headquartered in one centrally located spot with no more than a 2-hour drive to the various sites. The poor communication from Collette's main office prior to the tour was unsettling. An invoice stating, "Please remit full payment no later than 17 Feb, 2025" was not received until March 7. An accompanying document included an alert that the names we had scribbled on our registration forms during a travel talk 5 months earlier had to exactly match the names on our Real ID cards. Unfortunately, Collette sent out this "reminder" AFTER they had purchased our airline tickets. I promptly submitted a minor correction. Well, imagine my outrage when they passed along an airline "name change fee" of $100.00. I disputed this ridiculous charge (and won). Many of our fellow tour participants were not experienced fliers. But beyond making our airline reservations, Collette offered not one iota of guidance - not even a useful web link - towards navigating online check-in, baggage, self-service kiosks, TSA, etc. Granted, every airport and airline has its own arcane modus operandi, but still ... Nor was the Collette Compass app I installed on my smartphone useful. The itinerary was a mere copy of the printed documents previously mailed to tour participants. An accompanying list of restaurants and retail stores was woefully outdated; several had closed and others were inaccessible except by rideshare. Search engines (e.g. Google) provided far more concise and up-to-date info. Apart from the above 'plaints, we truly enjoyed the tour. Our hotel, Hyatt Place, was centrally located in downtown Rapid City. Brand new and luxurious, it was within easy walking distance of multiple stores, restaurants, and other attractions. The activities and attractions included in the tour itinerary were generally well curated. At times, though, we felt rushed, especially at lunch stops. We surely could have stayed longer at Wall Drugs, Hill City and Custer ... I'm certain most of our traveling companions would have been OK with returning to the hotel at 5:00 instead of 4:00. Also, after 3 days, multiple museums, displays and talks featuring the history and lore of South Dakota were becoming repetitive. Our tour included three dinners. A "welcome" dinner in a banquet room at a Best Western motel was catered by the adjoining Minervas Restaurant. A presentation by a native Lakota family was delightful but less so our meals, which arrived tepid and daintily portioned. In contrast, the food portions at the "farewell" dinner at Sabatino's were hearty (but their kitchen was not so accommodating in meeting dietary restrictions). The chuckwagon supper and show at Ft. Hays - not included in the tour price - was better overall than the included chuckwagon supper and show at the High Plains Heritage Center located in Spearfish. Collette really ought to consider switching to Ft. Hays for future SD tours. We traveled between sites in a brand new motor coach, enjoying a wonderful driver who was not only punctual and friendly but also knew Rapid City backwards & forwards and shared some great suggestions (including the enjoyable evening at Ft. Hays). But I've saved the best for last, namely our tour manager Barry. He is the reason I gave Collette 4 stars instead of 3. Never appearing stressed or impatient, Barry was unswervingly cheerful, polite, helpful, and an inspiring fountain of knowledge about the various sites we visited. When the weather turned sour, he got us to smile and laugh. In short, he was a great traveling companion and friend to every tour participant. We hope to travel with Barry again (and we hope Collette's HQ office gets their act together on communication and documents).

This was our first international trip since the beginning of the pandemic. As we neared the end of our journey, my husband and I tested positive for Covid and had to quarantine in Paris (we needed a negative Covid test to re-enter the U.S.) Collette was wonderful. They extended our stay in our hotel, assigned a lovely woman who spoke French and English, to call us every day and make sure we didn't need medical attention. After 5 days, we received a negative test and Collette got us home the next day. Fortunately, I had purchased trip insurance through Tripmate and, once home, Collette help me fill out the paperwork to submit to the insurance company. I was reimbursed for my hotel, food, Covid test, flight adjustment, and one day of our stay in Paris. I can't say enough good things about Collette. They were so nice and extremely helpful. We will be going back to Europe this upcoming autumn with Collette. AND I want to give a shout-out to our UK guide, Gail. Best tour guide ever!

Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, or reason to be negative, but you would expect something that is supposed to be so prestigious and honorable to have its own standalone facility. Alas, the basketball hall of fame shares its space with a Cold Stone Creamery and a couple of other restaurants. The HOF is shaped like a circle, so it's easy to navigate the three floors and to make sure you hit everything. But I felt the HOF was extremely lacking. I was expecting to see plaques/busts of players, owners, and dignitaries, with bios and whatnot, team/stadium history, and artifacts, and there really isn't any of that. Sure, there are some jerseys, basketballs, and nets on display but there are only a couple dozen of those. And it contains only a couple of sentences of information on them. I was expecting so much more. Heck, there's even an entire section devoted to Kobe Bryant, which is questionable at best given his checkered past. This is something that could and probably should be so much more. I spent more time (1.5 hours to and from) getting there than actually time spent there (1.25 hours). The HOF is that small. For $34 it just wasn't worth it. And honestly, it feels more like a museum than a HOF. I haven't been to other HOF, so maybe this is just how it is, but again I expected busts/statues and bios of players, owners, and dignitaries and a lot of other historical content and info, and its just not there. Of the things displayed, 99% of it is the 90's on and basketball goes back much farther than that. Even beyond that, it's called the Basketball Hall of Fame, not the NBA Hall of Fame, and there's very little mention beyond the NBA of college or any other basketball. So, in sum, it wasn't a good experience. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have done it at all, and I would say if someone is going to do it only do it with a discount code. The staff were all great, so I can't knock them, but the experience was forgettable. Too small, not enough displays/information, not enough historical content, and ultimately just not worth it.
