Honey, I am HOME! As much as I'd like to, I won't gate keep. However I am admittedly in my dive bar phase- officially. There's a huge satisfaction in sitting right up on the barstools screaming for another round while there's good vibes and music blasting all around me. You also just can't beat these prices. There are specials almost every night of the week (Whiskey Wednesday, Draft Tuesdays, etc). Cocktail menu is diverse and delicious. Servers are just the right amount of kind and talkative. If you're a fan of live music this is the bar for you! I came in for the first time to see a friend's band play and immediately dug the vibe of this place. It's just a really chill place for locals (you'll find NO tourists here)....almost hole in the wallish. I came in with my friends a little after 7 and the place was pretty empty but it didn't take long for it to fill-up as the evening progressed. By the time 11 pm rolled around it was a packed house in there. The bartenders were all awesome and super friendly and the drink specials are on point. Happy hour until 8pm on Saturdays? I'll take that! The band I came to see (Black Market Club) and their subsequent opening acts were awesome! The place is kinda small so it really makes the show feel more intimate. Came to 502 in a Thursday night to watch the NBA playoff game. The inside is clean and chill, perfect little local spot. The rock music was a little loud but after a few drinks I didn't notice too much. They have a good selection of beers, mixed drinks and they always have like 4 or 5 beer/shot combos for 5 bucks. The bartenders are all cool and helpful, especially Jim. They have quite a few TVs around the bar and a couple projectors as well so you don't miss a thing. Fun events always going on like open mic, karaoke, and even video game tournaments! I always just check their website and calendar. Since they have a stage, they usually have bands that play on the weekend in which they have a cover charge to get in. This can be a deterrent at times if you're just looking to come in for a quick drink. 502 is definitely a fun and not so average neighborhood bar that I will always continue to come to! read more

First things first: IF YOU ARE A TOURING BAND, this is the only place you need to play in San Antonio. In love with this venue. Hands down, without a doubt, 100% best sound system and sound engineers in all of San Antonio (and most of Austin, for that matter). Deric, Alex and their team have done a fantastic job bringing touring indie acts to our city, something that many local music hubs have failed at for a long time. Small Black, Gardens & Villa, Hank & Cupcakes, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Wild Child, etc. have all turned average weeknights into aurally pleasing experiences. Great beer and shot specials (Pabst + Jameson shot = $5) and a well-maintained restroom mean five stars, even though it's north of the 410 bubble. Call an Uber, take a Lyft, make the trek. I agree that they have a great beer selection. They have two ginormous chalkboard things with their cocktail list, and beer specials. Noticed they had St. Arnold's on tap and asked the bartender which one they had. He had no clue. Come on Dudebro, how do you not know what you have on tap? I asked for a sample and It tasted sweet like the Elissa. He then gave my brother the beer list and sho nuff it was the Elissa. Anyway I saw that they had Shiner Wild Hare at the bottom of the cooler and I asked for that. Bartender: **deer in headlights** Uhh I don't think we have that right now. Me: Yes, Dudebro, it's right down there. I'm looking at it. The place was pretty clean and "classy" by San Antonio standards. I don't always rate bars and nightclubs, but I thought I'd the 502 a little shout out. I went to see Electric Eel Shock who are are old friends of mine from my Bloodhound Gang days (we took them out on tour every chance we had). It had been about six years since I saw them, so there was no way I was going to miss this show! I didn't even know 502 existed. But off I went to find it and see one of my favorite bands of all time. The cover was cheap - $5, which was a good start. The door staff were friendly and cracking jokes. Arriving at the bar, I found (again) a friendly bar staff and a good selection of beer (carrying Ranger Creek will always get you bonus points). The lengthy bar provided plenty of seating, as did the tables scattered throughout. Everything was nice and new looking - I think this place was remodeled last year. Decor kind of reminded me of some of the Philly and NYC bars I remember playing in back in the mid-90s so it felt comfortable to me. Small bars always lack in two areas when it comes to music. Sound and lights. While I can't expect them to have a blaring PA and insane amounts of lights, I find most keep their costs low with these two items and it detracts from the overall experience. Sure I'm there for the music, but part of what makes a live show so good is the total experience. 502 did well with both - having both a rocking (small) PA system that fit their space perfectly and enough lights to make it look like a big rock show without making their electric bill outrageous. Bumped into the owner at the end of the night as I was talking to Aki from Electric Eel Shock. He was funny and interested in the bands and patrons and what they thought. If they continue to book strong national acts and high quality locals, this could easily become a must-visit club on touring circuits. Only down side? Parking. There just isn't enough it with several bars and Fast Eddie's being cramped together. I also overheard some conversation about breakins and car thefts from the parking lot. It happens everywhere but since I was sitting next the conversation, it worried me a bit. My car was fine though so I can't complain. read more

This is my favorite bar in SA. It's close to my work, the bartenders are always awesome and the drinks are cheap. I have taken different co-workers and vendors, we are never disappointed! Even the executives like the place. I like the dark & divey ambiance. I always go on a weekday when there are no events. It low key, no drama, everyone is friendly, and never too crowded. It's in a good neighborhood along with some good stores so it's safe to be, the drink selection is really awesome and I highly suggest a South Bound Greyhound drink. The only problem I can see here is that the bartenders get too busy with their regulars and pay no mind to other patrons, some times I have gone quite some time without any service and even purposely neglected just for the bartenders to serve their buddies wayyy behind me. So I left and went somewhere else Music is REALLY loud in this place so don't plan on having an extensive conversation without having to shout, unless you're on the patio where the smokers are and even then you're having to shout since it is packed and very limited on space. Overall: fights are known to break out here, young crowd with up to date music, not your grandpas hole in the wall type of bar. read more

The shot combos for those not looking to break the bank, the cocktail menu for someone looking for something a bit sweeter, and a great craft beer tap list that is sure to please even the snobbiest of craft beer connoisseurs (ahem...me). If Mike is working and you're craving a bloody mary, be sure to order one. His secret recipe is to die for and not to be missed. It's my spot to go to when I need time to make plans for the night but also want a draft beer or when I leave my main destination of the evening but I'm not quite ready to go to sleep yet. No cover on Saturday nights when there isn't a band playing (which is most Saturday nights unless a big name comes through) and you can almost always find a seat at the bar. The bartenders range from kind of friendly to super friendly and they're quick to pour you a beer. If liquor is more of your thing, stick with classics like Jack & Coke or Vodka Soda and avoid their chalkboard cocktail menu. I know that their Mexican Mule or Cucumber Martini sound like winners but I've never had a good "signature" cocktail here. read more

(A)outfreakinstanding bands (how flippin cool is it to show up at a tiny little San Antonio strip center bar and see a band, one that you were just listening to on your favorite Sirius station, playing live right in front of you??...WAYcool. Ubercool, actually.) (Thao and the Get Down Stay Down: I'm looking at you, folks) ...AND... (B) GREAT freakin beer. Even on the rare occasion that I do come across awesome music in a smallish venue within the greater-San Antonio-area, I pretty much have to resign myself to the idea of a Lone Star(or worse)-centric venue, with a preflight elsewhere. That is SO totally not the case at 502... I'd actually come for the beer alone, even without live music... things like Epic's Big Bad Baptist (one of my favorite beers of all time). Founder's Breakfast Stout (another one of them). Ballast Point Sculpin, and Victory at Sea. And last time I was there, there was a local tap, Southerleigh's Get Off My Lawn (YAAAYYY, local!! Represent!). THAT kind of good beer. Totally worth mentioning as well that all draught pours - ALL of them. Including things like the 12% ABV Big Bad Baptist - are $3 on Tuesdays. Huzzah! A friend of mine texted me yesterday, asking me to come out to a hush hush Girl in a Coma show that was happening later that evening at 502. I didn't quite know what to hope for from this establishment, but I was pleasantly surprised to have all my expectations quickly surpassed in the absolute best way. First and foremost, the layout of this place is accommodating to everyone. The long bar paired with the scattered tables make it easy to chat with people or enjoy the live music from any place in the bar. The staff are very friendly and the playlists inbetween the sets were A+. That doesn't really matter, I guess, but I really fucking enjoyed them. The beer selection is superb and I felt very comfortable in the bar itself. The restrooms were spotless, the bar itself friendly and open. I liked it so much I put an application in to work there. I'll definitely be going back to check out more live music (their stage is fantastic and the sound is rather good for such a small venue). Rumor has it there's karaoke and open mics on Monday, so those could be worth checking out as well. read more

I'm pretty sure this is my favorite bar in San Antonio. I love live music, and I was a bit saddened when I realized that the amount of bands coming to Austin weren't exactly making their way down to SATX. So when we found 502, I got super excited. They consistently have great little bands stopping in, and drink prices aren't bad either. It's not jam packed with annoying people, instead it's a chill crowd who also enjoys live music. The venue is just the right size to really enjoy the band/music, the cover prices aren't terrible, and staff is friendly. My only complaint is that I'm an old person with an early morning job, so waiting until 11 for a band to start playing (when the website says 8) means I don't get to enjoy much music unless it's on a weekend. But I guess that's what I get for getting older. Anyway, thank you 502 for bringing good music to SATX. (Oh, AND for your deliciously spicy jalapeno tequila.) read more

Most places either rock as a bar but suck as a venue or vice versa. 502 bar is the exception to that rule. I love this place as a venue BECAUSE it's so small, the performances seem a lot closer to the bands/artists performing in your living room than a massive amphitheater or sports arena. I say heck yes to that all day every day. Regarding the bar itself, it always seems clean both in the seating area and on the bar top itself and even behind the counters where they're mixing drinks. The draft selection is pretty good considering this is not the largest bar out there and even has some quality IPA's that are not commonly seen in SA. One of my favorite things about this place is that they have an ongoing Beer & Shot special for $5. They offer about 5 different combinations, all of which are good, and most recently, I even saw that they'll let you have a shot of their choosing on special based on the number that you roll on their dice. Talk about a cool way to get your patrons interacting with the staff and drinking shots. Smart move. I've seen a handful of really good local bands play here including Nina Diaz of Girl in a Coma and boy was it something to see. The acoustics here are above average for the bar scene and the sound system seems to be less muddy than most other places I've been to. All of this put together makes for a very cool, very unassuming environment with great drink specials, a respectable selection of beers and cocktails and nice bartenders who aren't too cool for school. I had some time to kill on a Wednesday afternoon while my son was at a Laser Quest party in the same strip center, so I went out strolling around looking for a place with good beer. When I first walked by 502, on a darkly-tinted door that prevented me from looking in, I read a message that said "Beards Welcome", so I (wrongly) thought the place was a lesbian bar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beard_(companion). I googled "good beer close by", and 502 came up with the tag "craft beer", so I went inside. This place was awesome! Fantastic selection of craft beer on draft, welcoming vibe, and Becky was a terrific and personable bartender. She said 502 has open mike on Sundays, karaoke on Mondays, and live alt-rock on weekends (which I will definitely be checking out). My only quibble is that, for a place that I believe aims to be an alt-rock place, there should be much more alt-rock in the bar's music stream (i.e., less James Taylor!). I have been meaning to write a review for this place ever since I first saw a show here about a year ago. Out of all of the venues in San Antonio, 502 would have to be my favorite. Most importantly, the sound here is better than anywhere I've been to in this city. So far, I have seen about 5 bands play here, and they have all sounded great. I really appreciate the variety of beer that they have to offer, as well as their cocktail selection. Great live music, beer selection, and an overall good crowd. I like this place. The atmosphere is relaxed, the bar staff is always friendly and helpful, and they host many great artists. I have seen many excellent bands here. The door charge is always reasonable (less than $10). They list their shows on Bands In Town (Android, iPhone, etc app) so it's easy to find what's happening. They are located next door to a Fast Eddie's if you would like to play pool and Oasis is on the other side if your feeling lame and/or adolescent. 502 always has creative drink specials. I went to 502 on Sunday and Nikki took care of me. She was genuine, she made me feel at home, and she was awesome. I went back to 502 bar tonight and the staff was incredible. The bartenders made me feel at home and I ran into the bartender from Sunday and she introduced to the others. In a weird way, I felt like I was part of the 502 family. Went to check out a show at 502 on Friday night. This was not my first visit, but has been a while since I've been here. This is a great spot for good beer at a reasonable price. The band I went to go see was Thao and the Get down stay down. They packed the place, which ended up not being such a great thing. The club is dark (of course), so it was really hard to see what the beer selection was for that particular day since it does vary. When I asked the bartender for a wheat beer or Hefeweizen, you would have thought I was speaking Martian. She had NO idea what I was talking about. I got the usual suggestion of Blue Moon, which any self respecting beer drinker knows ain't gonna cut it! I settled on Coors Light. After the show when me and the BF were able to see better....they had Naked Nunn!!! Still for the $8 cover it was still worth it. Very young crowd, so expect the behavior that comes with that. No offense, but you know what I mean. I would probably go back, but since it is way across town for me, it would have to be a pretty special occasion. read more
