Visited 5 Chefs with my mother in law, and I can promise that we will return! First off, I just visited today and my 5 star experience is the reason I'm leaving a same day review. The restaurant's character and decor immediately pulls you in. We were promptly seated, had our order taken, and I cannot lie about the amazing service! The staff was kind, and I was amazed by how quickly everything was finished. I gave the -Fried Chicken Sandwich- a shot, and was greeted with this hot, crispy, perfectly coated and seasoned, humongous** piece of poultry! I could've had two sandwiches if I was given another bun. I am not usually the type of person that gets dessert... but getting a slice of the -Carrot Cake- to go was a decision that I will absolutely make again. All I will say is that I was already full... and still ate 3/4 of my slice. read more

I was invited to this restaurant and let me tell you. It was the best Saturday experience I have had in a restaurant during lunch in a very long time. The serves were amazing, food was the bomb, the interior was extraordinary and the deserts were out of this world. This place is a must go see for sure. Food, shopping, southern charm and definitely interesting history. Ask the servers about the paintings all inside this place and see what you learn. I am telling you it is a must if you are anywhere near or far to this place. I will put them on my most favorite place to go or take visitors that come to see me out of state. read more

There were 23 in our church group. Savannah was our server and did a great job. We ordered many different things and all were very good, especially the cakes. read more

This is a quaint, off the beaten path, wonderful restaurant. It would give you the feel if Paula Deen put her flavor in Cracker Barrel. Plenty of shopping experience which also allows time to eye the cakes. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and fries. I do a lot of eating and really was trying to remember a piece of chicken so tender. And large. I appreciate the fact they didn't just soak the breast in the buffalo sauce. Just the right amount. The fries were perfect - hot and crispy. Our waitress took orders for the four of us and didn't write it down. Didn't miss a thing. I had the strawberry cake but tried the yellow with chocolate and the wedding cake. My goodness. The cake alone is worth the trip. Enjoy!! read more

I visited 5 Chefs yesterday for the first time during The Strawberry Festival after knowing about it for many years but never going to Portland. The food was fresh, delicious and the service was great. We were even visited at the table by the owner. The shop was also beautiful and well stocked. I will definitely be back. read more

TSA always takes a look and I rave about 5 Chefs. I speak so highly of 5 Chefs and my bring customers all the time to experience the cakes. Enough about the deserts...I enjoy the friendly environment and southern hospitality, which is rare where I'm from. read more

Best carrot cake EVER! Not a crazy menu but a good lunch bite. Soups, sandwiches, etc. but the cakes are really where it's at. They are INSANE. YUM YUM YUM read more

I called two days prior to my mother-in-law's birthday and ordered a hummingbird cake. The day that I was supposed to pick it up I was so busy trying to get ready for our trip that I completely forgot! I called five minutes prior to them closing and the owner answered the phone. I explained to her that I was extremely sorry that I missed my pick up time Would she be available for me to come and get the cake still. She said yes, they were closing up and to come on over. I couldn't believe she actually let me come by when they were closed! So happy that I got to get the cake. Everyone said it was delicious! read more

We've been trying to get to 5 Chefs for awhile now but since they are only open from 11-2 Mon-Sat that window is very small. We finally got there today and we were extremely disappointed. They have a very limited menu - quite a few salads to choose from, but not a big selection of sandwiches. They only had 2 types of burgers - plain and cheese, Not a choice of cheeses, just American! American cheese isn't really even cheese especially if you use the individually wrapped in plastic kind. We were expecting some exciting culinary delights from 5 Chefs. They boasted about their all grass fed beef farmed locally and I got a burned hockey puck - dry and without flavor! Thank goodness for the ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions or it would have been completely tasteless. I do have to say that their homemade chips were delicious! Perfectly salted and nice and crispy! That earned them a second star. The hot special today was Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra. It also surprisingly came with potato salad and a dinner roll (which was stale). Who serves mashed potatoes and potato salad on the same plate? Apparently 5 Chefs does!! The gravy was very lightly poured over only the Salisbury Steak and not the mashed potatoes. My hubby asked for butter for his mashed potatoes and roll and the waitress brought him one pat. So half a pat for his roll and half a pat for his mashed potatoes. He was hungry, it was edible but his expression summed it up. This is a one and done place! It seems everyone comes for the homemade cakes as the other diners were all packing up to go boxes with pretty sliced cakes. We had no desire to try any type of layer cakes so we just left. read more

Average sit down restaurant. good food but not exceptional. Seemed short staffed. Clean.

Good food , full menu. Delicious desserts, good selection of flavors of cake. Great shopping, rooms and rooms of apparel , purses, shoes, jewelry, home decor, Christmas decorations read more

Food is very good, but desserts are awesome! Their cakes will make you want to break that diet! They're amazing and I don't know if they're homemade, but they definitely taste it! Service was great, very friendly staff. Ambience is really good. Its beautiful in there. read more

Had a great lunch with real home cooked veggies and fried catfish. Of course we had to share a slice of carrot cake.

Women's dream right here..... cake and shopping! The boutique is the best in town. It's one of Portland best kept secrets.

I am not returning to this place. Reason? Pure snobbery of the owner. When you receive that kind of snobbery from the owner, no matter the food...or the gift shop, or the desserts can ever make it right. I had enough of that...no one is above being kind and considerate...nor being selective as this owner is. Without going into detail...let me say that for a church going person, this owner needs to rethink her priorities and do some real soul searching. I wash my hands of this place and it is totally due to her ATTITUDE. I do not tolerate this kind of business person and choose to never spend another dime there. You have lost a good customer. read more

My husband and I stopped at this lovely place this past week and couldn't of been more pleased. The food was wonderful, the German chocolate cake was one of the best I've ever had and the service was above and beyond. Must try if in Portland. read more

Good food, friendly servers,GREAT DESSERTS! And several gift shops with reasonable prices!

Clean environment, excellent LARGE CAKE SLICES, and service / interactions are always a pleasure. Just an enjoyable place to go. Food is good enough, nothing over the top but worth eating again as I've been here 3 times. Eat small portion and get couple pieces of cake to fill up!! not much competition so probably best plAce in Portland read more

Try the fried pickles but, bring your own ranch dipping sauce. Breakfast is the best and the daily choices of the meat + 3 are hard to beat. I'm not a hamburger fan but I often hear others rave about theirs. 5 Chef's is the best in Portland and always inviting, clean and affordable. Just good southern comfort food. read more

52 mins to get our food????? I don't think so. Then the waitress agrees that the wait is too long??? Geez. And never got my baked potato? $13 for one piece of fish and a salad??? Go somewhere else. I had to eat part of my grand daughters grilled cheese sandwich to keep from starving Talk about poor management, poor planning and can't take care of clients???? And I overheard an employee say that the excuse was they had 2 big tables of 25. Really bad experience overall. Food is definitely NOT worth the wait. Go to McDonald's for better service, better food and maybe a 3 min wait And they never offered to adjust the bill read more

I've only been to this place once or twice, and haven't been in a while. They have decent variety but I feel like there could be more. (of course, this could have changed over the months.) I got their Philly Cheese Steak and it was pretty good, I'd rate it a 7/10 flavor wise. This place is somewhat expensive but as I said before, things might have changed since I've last been. I'd recommend giving this place a visit. read more

Much of the food seems like it is straight out of the frozen food isle at piggly wiggly. People are friendly the place is nice but food leave much to be desired. read more

What a nice surprise! A great old home (looks like it's been added on to many times-huge) with great food, professional friendly service AND a large rambling gift shop for walking off that gigantic piece of cake. Lunch is mainly salads (large) and sandwiches. Had the Philly cheese steak ... filling, fresh, and served with plenty of crinkle fries or chips. Try the sweet fruit tea..yummy. And the 1/5 of a huge layer cake will probably need a To Go box. Have 16 cake choices...the Pea Pickin' was a 2layer fresh pineapple cake, with filling and whipped cream containing pineapple and mandrin orange chunks ... Wonderful. The gift shop is a maze of small rooms to discover fun items just off the entrance. Lots of parking and in downtown Portland. Will be back. read more

I enjoy getting lunch at 5 chefs, and shopping after. The food is always good. I do wish they would add maybe some new sandwiches or lunch dishes to the permanent menu. That would be my only complaint. The service is always great and the desserts.... holy cow! It's also dang near spotless in there. I like to go after the typical lunch rush, when it isn't as packed. I like that the shoppes stay open until 4 as well, it makes it nice if you ever need to stop and pick up a quick gift for someone; they definitely have it there! Seriously, it's hard not to empty your wallet there lol. read more

I loved this place! My friend took me there for my birthday. I must say the catfish an salad we were served was wonderful an very tasty. We splurged and shared a piece of peanut butter cake. Yummmmmm! Will definitely go again. read more

Large selection of foods and deserts. Something for everyone. Pies and cakes or fried chicken and meatloaf. Good meat+3

Pros: Cute atmosphere and gift shop. Good service. Cons: The food. It was average to subpar. They had a seasonal pumpkin soup that was good, but everything else was lacking. Stale croissant. Miracle Whip base for their chicken salad (ick!) and not much flavor. The coconut cake tasted like a box mix and left a filmy chemical aftertaste in my mouth. Eeewww! I can make better food at home. read more

5 Chefs / Occasions is a lovely restaurant/gift shop in Portand, TN. I had the fried chicken, green beans, and potato salad for lunch. All amazing, with just the southern touch I was looking for. The salad bar had homemade salad dressings, all delicious. But the best part was my Pea-Picking Cake. OH MY. The gift shop is chock-full of precious items you want to buy for people you care about. Nice touches, like Brighton jewelry, Vera Bradley bags, Boots, Tops, and Trinkets. We enjoyed our visit, and I can't wait to go back. read more

Ordered off the "specials" menu which offered traditional southern favorites. My order was acceptable, nothing terrible but nothing note worthy - Cracker Barrel is a better bet. My wife had chicken salad that was so bland cardboard has more flavor. She also ordered broccoli cheese "soup" that not only tasted like warmed over nothing and was thick it was more like cheese dip than cheese soup. Would not recommend. Back to my meal. Ordered chicken and dumplings which I was very excited about. because they are not offered on very many menus. They were fine, as stated above Cracker Barrel's are better - but the thing is, my order was served as side item and not the main course. Another person at the table ordered the same thing and their order came in a completely different dish and was so much they took some home!! This is to say nothing of the fact that our party of 8 were served in two waves - 4 people received their food and it took so long for the remained of the table to be served that I went to look for our waitress and when I finally found someone she was coming back to the table and made the remark - in a very shady tone - "I'm literally right behind you." This wouldn't have been issue had all the food come out at the same time, as is customary. We waited so long the first wave of food had become cold while we waited. Would not recommend at all. read more

Love this adorable place. Food is fantastic and portions are big. Save lots of room for massive sizes of cake of unbelievable cakes. Good local fare and you can shop in the quaint store afterwards. Kinda like a local Cracker Barrel but way better. read more

I met several members of out-of-town family for lunch here on a Saturday. All 6 of us ordered something different and no one was disappointed! Everything turned out great from the appetizers through the desserts. Great sandwiches, burgers, entrees, sides, and cakes. I particularly enjoyed the lobster bisque. The location is interesting too--great atmosphere, nicely decorated, cool converted old house. The dining room is tucked in the back surrounded by levels and rooms of unique gift shop items. read more
